Outlook 2003 Installation Problem

Hello,

I was recently trying to re-install Outlook 2003, but after beginning the installation I received this error:

Error 1402 Setup cannot open the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Applications\WINWORD.EXE\TaskbarExceptionsIcons\WordMail.

Verify that you have permissions to access the registry or contact your Information Technology department for assistance.

======

I have installed (and uninstalled) Outlook 2003 from my computer several times in the past 2 or 3 years. Why am I suddenly getting this error message ? And what can I do about it ?

Any help would be appreciated !

Do you have WebRoot Spysweeper installed? Is this your personal computer or a work computer that your System Admin may have denied rights to install? I found an interesting article that addresses this issue on the Microsoft website.

Hi, Pam !

No, I don't have SS installed. And it is my personal computer. I, too, eventually found an article which may be the same one you're referring to (with 4 methods of resolving the problem of an error message). I tried two of them to no avail. As I noted in my original message, it's strange that this (possible) lack of permissions would happen now, since I've installed the same software from the same disc on the same computer several times earlier ! :-\

I have not yet tried the "clean boot" method. I'm hoping that may help. If not, .....???

If anyone has any other explanations/resolutions not mentioned by MS, I'll be glad to read them !

Until proven otherwise, approach each failure as if they are occurring on different cars. The biggest mistake people make when attempting diagnostics is assuming things are related, they can be, but certainly don't have to be. So pick one, and troubleshoot it, then move onto another. If you happen to solve more than one with a particular repair, simply smile and move on. The headlights, tail-lights. They share a common power input to the headlight switch on most vehicles, but not all. Start with a schematic and check to see how the power distribution feeds power to the switch assembly. Question, do you have high beams when you pull the dimmer handle for "flash to pass"? No Bus. That means the serial data bust has shut down on the car. Unfortunately, that will be a failure that is likely beyond your ability to diagnose. You need the Chrysler DRBIII scan tool and its strength as the factory tool, plus a digital storage oscilloscope to diagnose that problem efficiently. The locks locking/unlocking by themselves could be a result of the failing data bus, or simply a bad door switch, with the previous being more likely at the moment. When the BCM sees serial data report that the vehicle is moving it locks the doors. Once it sees that the vehicle has been stopped and shifted to park, it unlocks the doors. The loss of serial data could cause this to occur incorrectly. The fact that it occurs after its been raining could indeed be a clue. We often find modules damaged by water intrusion on many different vehicles. Sometimes things like a windshield seal are to blame. One vehicle I can think of off hand has a TSB where the technician has to install a set of shields to protect a new computer from rainwater when its replaced. (Not a Chrysler vehicle that comes to mind, this is just a reference) You really do need a pro to sort this out. One that understands electronics, and has the correct equipment to communicate with your cars computers.

I am able to print an email on my new pc; the problem seems confined to Word documents. Word documents print fine on my old XP. It doesn't have the XPS Document Writer listed in Printers.

urlee, I know what you mean about dialup. I just got high speed in February. I did find the answer to my problem with OE. Just on the off chance something might show up I checked my e-mail settings at my server for my e-mail. When I clicked the button to make changes it showed I had nine letters (shown as dots) in my password, but I knew it should have only 8. I deleted what was there and re-entered my password and saved it. I then went to OE and low and behold it worked. I have no explanation how the password could have gotten changed since it has worked since Feb. when I got high speed and they helped me set up OE as my e-mail. I don't know what my friend did to give me a little more speed, but I don't think he would have been in my server website. Go figure? I am just glad I found it, and it is working. Jane PS: No one is touching my settings or whatever again.

Try running the repair feature. It's under Tools or Help (I don't have access to Outlook right now). You'll need the original disc to run it. If you haven't, check for any updates too.

Nope. The rest of the methods in the MS article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687) didn't work either. :-( I still have no idea what could be causing my installation error.

I'd be glad to entertain any suggestions before I call it quits on this one.

I was hoping that the above steps would help. So, the Opa11.dat had permissions set to allow Full Control to Everyone?

Are you comfortable with editing the registry? It's worth a shot (meaning that I would try it) to Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then open Software-->Microsoft--->Office ---Office 11 and just delete that whole key. Repeat in HKEY_CURRENT_USER then try the install again.

An alternate method might be to create a completely different user account, grant administrator priveledge and try from there.

Actually, when I was trying method 4 there was no security tab to click, so I just followed the advice listed in the last item:

If these steps do not resolve this issue, delete the Opa11.dat file or the Data.dat file from the following folder, and then restart an Office 2003 program or an Office XP program:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data

But that, too, didn't do anything.

Re: your two suggestions:

I tried both and neither worked, I'm afraid. :-(

No security tab? I would think that creating a new profile would have helped. It sounds as if something has changed your permissions inside your login account. Any other administators on this computer able to install it? Last but not least, are you running different versions of Office and Outlook? Ex Office XP and Outlook 2003?

1. I went through the instructions as carefully as I could (viewing hidden files, etc.) and saw no security tab where I should have. I just tried to go there again ( C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\ ), but I can't even find "Office" anymore ! At least not under "All Users." It was only under "Owner." ??? Maybe that's because of the registry changes you suggested. Anyway...

2. No other administrators on the computer. Just me. And I only created a (temporary) second Administrator account to try your suggestion above.

3. Hmmmm... I don't actually use any of MS Office software on this computer. Soon after I bought it (a low-end HP desktop) I uninstalled the stuff I wasn't going to use. A few years later I bought an "Outlook 2003" disc simply for using that program (mainly for email). It installed w/o incident on at least 2 previous occasions. Only this time has it been giving me trouble. "sigh>

I have a feeling I'm going to have to have a "Computer Guy" come over and actually look at the thing to get this straightened out. Unless you can think of something else.

In any event, I appreciate all your help !!
