iv'e been infected!!!

Hi everyone!!

My computer is messed up!!! I have been invaded by something. There are new icons on my desktop, programs that I have not downloaded. I have tried to restore it back to another day, but that doesn't work either,when it goes to reboot, a blue screen comes up saying something about checking a driver verifier(?), enabling a "special pool"(?) and disabling a bios memory(?). At the bottom, it says "memory dumped" Another thing, something called Brave Sentry keeps popping up, wanting to check for viruses, and I can't click out of it.

Can anyone give me any input!!!

Hi Randy,
thanks for responding so quick. Unfortunatley, I have already come across a problem, when I get to where you reboot in safe mode, it kicks me out and shows me that blue screen again. Then the only way to get back on is to shut the computer off.

Just throwing out some ideas, maybe you can dust the tops with sulphur and then seal the cuts with wax. I've seen some scabs become mushy again because water got inside. A scab can crack and even a little moisture will start to rot out the stock. I've never sealed anything with wax but I'm sure there are people on here who have that can advise you.

The cultivar name is 'Andenken an Ludwig Spath', actually. An authority on phytophthora told me awhile ago it was too late for sudden oak death quarantines to be effective, so local officials are probably wasting their time and budgets, in Maine and elsewhere. Believe it is thought to even blow around on the wind, in water droplets. Here a nursery had to put some rhododendrons in plastic bags and bury them in a deep trench because state agents found some sudden oak death on them. So it's not just the time and resources of states that are being spent on trying to put the cat back in the bag. Worse things are being noticed these days in Europe, trying to keep those out of North America would certainly be worthwhile.

As the originator of the one cane removal technique, I can tell that it works sometimes. Sometimes is a whole lot better than never. One scientist has said to me that how can you tell it doesn't come back. I have responded to him, after ten years of good healthy growth, that should be enough. I don't think it works for fall infected hybrid teas as I didn't save any of mine that got fall infections that I saw the following spring. The other thing I do is check with a microscope to see if the infected bush is teaming with eriophyid mites. Mine aren't. I don't use insecticide or acaricides and I see beneficials at the microscopic and visbile to the naked eye sizes. Here's my ebook about RRD/RRv for those who haven't seen it before. Looks like Downy Mildew on the cucumber, PM on the zucchini IMO. Not much you can really do for either. There are some homebake recipes with marginal effectiveness. I have not dealt with DM but PM is a fact of life here... it happens.

To get into 'Safe Mode' (Windows XP) have you tried the following?

Click 'Start' and then click 'Run'.

Type (msconfig) without the quotation marks in the 'open' space and click 'OK'. This will take you to the Microsoft Configuration Utility.

Select the 'Boot.ini' tab.

Go down to the 'Boot options' box and check 'Safeboot'. Click 'apply and close'. You will get a pop-up window saying you must 'restart your computer'. Click 'Restart'. This will take you into 'Safe Mode'.

You will get another pop-up saying 'Windows is running in safe mode', to proceed, click 'Yes'.

To get out of 'Safe Mode' you will have to go back to the 'MS Configuration Utility'/'Boot.ini' tab, 'uncheck' the 'Safeboot' box in 'Boot options' and click 'apply' otherwise you will keep looping back into safe mode when you try to restart.

Note: Upon restart you will get a pop-up notification that you have 'made changes to the MS Config Utility'. Check the box 'don't show this message again' and 'OK'.

If you don't see the 'Run' command in your 'Start Menu', right click 'Start', click 'Properties'. In the 'Start Menu' tab click 'Customize' and select the 'Advanced' tab. In 'Start menu items:' scroll down and put a check mark in the 'Run Command' box. Click OK twice. The 'Run' command should now show up in your 'Start' menu.

Hope this helps you get you PC into 'Safe Mode'.
