My step-dad is gone

It's a blessing, really. He had no quality of life this last 6 weeks or so. Mom is doing just fine, although I know she will miss him terribly once everything calms back down.

For those of you that are not familiar, Frank was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in July. They did surgery to remove it, but it got him anyway.

Saddest of all of this is that his daughter's husband passed away unexpectedly on Saturday from medical issues that he has been dealing with for years. He was in his 50's. Poor girl lost her husband on Saturday and her dad on Sunday. I can't even imagine how painful that must be!

I have been trying to help my husband. He hasn't shown any grief since the day he had to see his father's body at the funeral home. At the funeral he was the only dry-eyed person. I have been doing everything around the house, and anything I can think of to make things easier on him. But I am about ready to snap. NOt at him but at the insensitivity of other people. It is crazy. First, the my FIL's sister (in her 50's) posted an invite to his funeral on facebook. It was supposed to be a private family graveside service because my husband's mother is in a very fragile state right now. It was such a shock and she is not doing well. So two days before the funeral it is found out that his family now has to get together enough food to feed about 50 ppl because my FIL's sister invited all these people to the service and get together afterward. They did NOT need the extra stress of having to do this!! And a simple thing- my parents decided to send flowers my MIL's house even though they really don't know her. My mother asked ME to send them (because I could pick out something she'd like I guess) so I called a local florist and asked that the flowers be delivered to the house on the day of the funeral. The florist calls me back the day of the funeral to say they couldn't get the flowers I wanted in that day so they would be delivered the next day. I didn't want to argue so I said ok. There are more important things. But then I get another call that evening saying the flowers wouldnt' be delivered until TWO days after the funeral. I spoke with the owner who was VERY rude. When I said the flowers were for a funeral he corrected me and said "No they are not for a funeral, they are being delivered to a home address." Yes, dumbass but they have a sympathy card with them. He then asked what the address was even though I'd already given it to the person who took the order previously. He went on to say it wasn't his fault (I wasn't even upset at this point) that his supplier was late and all he could do was have me select another arrangement and he "Might" be able to deliver it by the next day. I found another florist and called him back and asked him to cancel the order. He said he'd already made arrangements to get the flowers I needed (still two days late) and I told him I just wanted to cancel the order please and he said whatever and hung up on me!! Stupid, but I just broke down crying. And at the service, the strangest thing was that my MIL did not want to watch her husband's urn be buried in the dirt (her kids and grandkids wanted to watch) and I definately don't blame her. She is still thinking of him as a person who is alive or has characteristics of being alive and to see that would just kill me. She started bawling and told everyone she had to get out of there and NOT one of her kids escorted her away. MY FIL's sister who posted the thing on facebook took her away. It also seems that my MIL does not want to hear any good things about her husband from anyone. SHe is very angry toward him (probably for leaving her alone) and if anything nice is said she gets mad. So I say nothing. I just don't know what to do.

Thank you both for your responses. Amber i do tell my daughter under no cercumstance is she allowed to disrespect him. She has had her privileges taken way on a monthly base. Usually he is the one who picks the punishment and for how long. Sometimes im not exactly sure what all he takes away. The last time he punished er he took everything away from her. She doesnt have tv computer, netflix, going to movies for over six months. I unfortunately did not heard the punishment, because the day he gave the punishment i was recovering from a bronchoscopy. I thought I had heard him say she can not play on anything he bought, but unfortunately i was wrong. She is banned from everything. She can only play with her toys and read books. My husband has always had my oermission to disciplinw our daughter. I've tried very hard not to step on his toe when it came to punishing her. Even though six months of no electrinics is a pretty tough punishment for an eight year old, i've still stood behind him. She had a project last month and my husband refused to help her because of how she treats him. He feels that she wont fail becausebof her age and will give her a grade for effort. I however feel completly different. School work is not something i am going to say no to. No my husband does not have children of his own. Our daughter is his first shot at being a parent. He goes by how he acted as a child and expects the same way, he was a good obedient kid. Myself, on the other hand, gave my parents a challenge. I didn't do bad things against the law but i gave quite a few gray hairs to my mom. I know he cares about her but even i have doubts. I understand how mean she can be, trust me she hurts me the worst when she gets in one of her moods. However no matter how much she mistreats me,im still her mother. I should always be there for her. He is a dad now and he should also be beside me helping her through this. We have tried sitting down with her and explained the things we would be able to do as a family if only she listened to what we asjed her to do. She seems to behave for a few days and goes back to the same way as before. Unfortunately she is half the time with us and half the time with her bio dad so she gets a break from her punishmebt. When she comes back we have to start all over again. I've tried to explain to my husband she is just a child, usually when ahe is not around, but he doesn't follow. To him he just see an evil kid who will not change. He has even said out loud that if she doesnt change that she will one day be flipping burgers at a fast food joint. Anytime i sit with him and talk about her it's always negative. He doesnt even believe her teacher when we were told how smart she is and how polite and respectful she is. I was evwn stopped by the before and after school care staff last week, on how polite and respectful and willingness to help she was.

@parent of one Yep, its for real. Yeah, I feel pretty bad about the swearing, especially that last time. About the phone...it is my work mobile, so I can receive calls from anyone, but I am only meant to call out regarding work related matters. I just got in that habit, they are pretty strict about it actually. @incognitomom She is in college and works part-time for a telco. Actually I have met other parents who cannot believe the wife lets the boyfriend sleep over. I wouldn't allow it either but I have to watch what I say. @justmetoo No, I don't think I have been the horse's ****. Actually, although it might not sound like it, my wife is actually really quite conservative, like an aunty or grandmother type of personality, not the modern 'with-it' personality. I really love her. I believe she extracted promises from the daughter about the boyfriend, sort of like an honor system...you may have seen those wooden boards that were used about a hundred years ago so that a boyfriend could lay in bed with the girlfriend...well, sort of that kind of mentality. Hint: look up 'bundling' (tradition) in Wikipedia. @myfampg Pardon, but who is the whack job? Like, these things even the purported accident with the wife's former husband, are pretty much normal, I would say. Especially in her home country which has much larger disparity between rich and poor, and wealth was part of the problem, jealousy of wife's wealth being the reason her false friend contrived to ruin her marriage. At least in my home country we also have a huge problem with male suicide, which is ignored in the mainstream, don't know about the US tho'. And problems within step-families are par for the course, aren't they? In fact, I would suggest that only a whack job would suggest that step-families do not have their own unique set of problems. UPDATE: Well things have quieted down a little. SD is making arrangements to move out to near BF's place. SD has new pet rabbit. I have been keeping the swearing right down, thankfully.

Well JNM, Now you've gone and done it, mentioning "Because You Loved Me." When I think of this song, I think of my first DH. I was 22 when I met him; 24 when we married; 38 when he was killed. When I first heard this song, I thought of him. I don't know that he would say he really grew up during our marriage (he had done a lot of growing prior to our being together), but I know I did. He really was the sort of fellow who believed we all have God given potential and we ought to live our lives trying to maximize that potential. He truly encouraged those around him to challenge themselves, to stretch themselves, to grow. He literally "gave me wings and made me fly." I think I may have mentioned once or twice to him that I thought it would be really neat to learn how to fly an airplane. One year for my birthday, I opened a card from him and inside was the business card of a local flight instructor with an appointment time on it. He had arranged for me to take flying lessons. To this day, I am an instrument-rated private pilot. He worked on his pilot's license at the same time and over a period of about five years, we shared incredible adventures. We flew ourselves all over the US and, one year, we even went island hopping, flying ourselves down to and around the Caribbean. It was amazingly wonderful. In January, 1991, he was returning from a trip. I was at our little local airport waiting for him. I had just spoken to him on the radio and then went outside to watch for his arrival. While attempting to land, he crashed. He was killed instantly. I was a witness to the accident. It is funny how the lyrics of songs can evoke such powerful emotions from such different experiences. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him --- today more acutely than usual. I miss him deeply, but when I think of everything I am because he was in my life and because he loved me, I can muster a little smile through the tears, remembering.

I'm so, so sorry to hear this. Frank, I hope, had his full measure of years. Still it's so hard to say goodbye. The loss of his son-in-law is really tragic. His wife must be devastated. Take good care of yourselves. I'm sorry for your losses.

I'm very sorry to hear about your step-dad. We almost lost mine this weekend, and it's still touch and go, so I'm getting a glimpse of what you're going through. It's hard.

Thank you everyone. These next few days will be rough on mom and Pam, but they'll get through it with the support of their families and the "cyber-support" of friends like you all.

Yes, we were all hoping that the surgery would give Frank some more quality time, but the "higher powers" had other plans for him, apparently.

I'll make sure the family knows they have lots of hugs coming from all over the globe. Thanks again.

Well, the funeral is over, it was a nice service.

Tomorrow my kids get to drive to South Dakota to attend their paternal Grandfather's funeral. He passed away yesterday. Yep...two Grampa's in one week. People say it happens in threes, and I'm beginning to believe it!.

What a weird bunch of events.....
