Yes, more help...InfranView 4.20 question

Hi,

MS Home Ed XP IE7

I just downloaded InfranView 4.20, during set up it asks:

Do you want to associate extensions with InfranView?

Then theres a long list with boxes next to each item to check if wanted. At the bottom there are buttons to select, Images Only...Select All...None next to that is an empty box that says For all users (XP)

Okay, I have no idea what I should be checking not checking. I wanted this to be able to change image formats, etc.... Please advise. Also should I get and download any available plugins for this as well? Thanks

Sapphires you should indeed download and install the plug ins for Irfanview.

Regarding file associations this is entirely a personal preference. If you are happy with how your images are displayed now click 'No' to all. This does not affect your ability to use Irfanview at all. By clicking 'Yes' all associations will be moved to Irfanview and you may not be too happy with that.

Thanks all for your tips! I meant to mention that I recently laid down mulch so that should help extend the time too. I did the finger test yesterday and one of my plots was still somewhat wet after two 100 degree days. But I think I have been making the mistake of not soaking for long enough. Before, I would just water till I saw puddles. My soil is excellent from what I have been told :). The guy who had the plots before me did a great job and my plants seem to be doing well and thriving. But I am new and have lots to learn. Been doing ACT every few weeks and there are tons of worms in my plots. I am just trying to find that happy medium for watering. Will test it out by soaking them Saturday, waiting a few days and doing the finger test. Dave- The property is owned by the city and they have strict guidelines. They provide the water but we all share the hoses and come and go at different times. So there is no way to set this up. I would do it if I had my own property. I think I've done well not overwatering so that's something good I've been doing. I am glad to know overwatering is more dangerous. Thanks Again! Wow. A bonanza of good advice. Thanks to all of you, I now have 25 tabs open on my laptop. Am I easy to shop for? I am, but my hips are not. Always a problem where pants are concerned. My feet are more cooperative -- 7M. I saw some Merrills that I may get. They are the hiking look, with a sort of fat rubber toe. I also have an ancient pair of Josef Seibel shoes that are super comfy. I plan to be buried in them. They are more like a regular shoe than hikers. The Naots are nice and seem to have some shoes that cover both hiking and city walking. Kswl, wish I could just click on "buy" on that page and it does give me good ideas. Mtn, my tour includes porterage for one bag. I love saying that -- porterage. I have visions of a man with white gloves, bowing and scraping. Anyway, he can carry the heavy one and I must tote anything else.Of course, it's up to me to get it off the carousel and through customs. I'll be doing any laundry in my hotel bathroom. Yes, we do move from place to place but stay three nights in most places, so that should give things a chance to dry. I'll bring some liquid detergent and some clothes pins, as well as one plastic hanger. I have to have my own shampoo and conditioner as well as hair gel (Redken 06). I have little plastic containers for those. I like the idea of a black silk turtleneck. Hhi, thanks for the reassurance that there will always be someone who looks worse than I do. So my colors will be black and plum, since that is what I seem to have mostly and different things work together. You all are the best! Oh did I tell you I bought a Samsonite spinner. Seems okay, but those wheels take up a lot of space that could be holding clothes. My small bedroom looks like a suitcase factory with my recent purchases (one to be returned) along with what I already owned. I also had a suitcase shopping tragedy. I saw a terrific Hartman bag (kind of a camera case size) that would have been a great carryon at TJ Maxx for only $67. Stupid me did not pick it right up and while I was checking out the Samsonite, someone else bought it. I almost snatched it out of their cart when they weren't looking.

New construction should have a heating and cooling load (aka Manual J) calculation. Your builder should not be suggesting sizes. The size needs to be calculated four your house and location. I also suggest identifying equipment built for coastal applications. Wall insulation of R19 is good. You could upgrade the R13 to R15, but only if it is at a reasonable cost. Is the R30 in that attic blown in insulation? If it is, then see how much it would cost to upgrade to R40. Blown in insulation is often not uniformly installed, and will settle over time. I would put more money towards better windows than insulation in my opinion.

bry911--your insurance company and mortgage companies would beg to differ. And you'll be begging them in court if anything goes wrong. Mortgages and insurance in condo/co-op type buildings are specified to certain wall surfaces. There are people who work for those companies whose job it is to write and check those things. I have a friend who did that. I have done the entire primer on insurance policies before and I simply don't want to rehash it now. For some reason I did an entire thread over HO3, HO5 and HO6 policies. What is covered and what can be denied. Can you present some reasonable grounds for an HO6 policy to deny a claim based on a two inch notch in the drywall? Please provide some evidence of that happening, because this is something I have looked at several times and I can't find any instance of an insurance company prevailing when denying because of a non-conforming work that was an indirect factor in the damage. Most states (probably every state) will have insurance regulations that specifically prevent this. Let's also not forget that most (really all) HO6 policies specifically protect you from being sued for your own negligence? So the entire assertion is beyond ridiculous. For them to deny your damage they would have to demonstrate that the notch caused the damage. In the end, they are not going to do anything different because you notched your drywall. If they are looking for an excuse to deny your claim they are going to find one and hold to it until someone makes them pay. Finally, if you are actually worried about the wall assembly squirt a little great stuff fireblock in it and be done with it. ----- ETA: Just to be clear (and we are speaking generally because each case is a bit nuanced), insurance has some small leeway to decline to reimburse you for your negligence. However, there are many caveats with this. First, negligence is more than doing something wrong, it is doing something that is unreasonably wrong. I feel confident that I would prevail when the insurance company claimed that making a 4" x 1" notch in drywall to get a range in is not reasonable. I feel confident that I can find thousands of exhibits to prove this is done a lot, and that is all you would really need to do to defeat a negligence claim. Next, in reality that negligence must border on intentional. The classic example given is a water pipe leak that the homeowner lets happen for a week before calling someone to stop it. The biggest reason that homeowner claims get denied is not negligence it is indifference. Written into your policy there is a demand that you act to mitigate your insurance company's liability. You must take reasonable action to stop damage from worsening. Furthermore, the severe negligence must be the proximate cause of your damages rather than an indirect factor. If that were the case insurance would never pay out they would just find something that you did wrong that made the situation worse. For example, you probably have chemicals stored improperly in your home, and in case of a fire those improperly stored chemicals might act as accelerants, and so insurance could walk into practically every home and deny the claim based on that fact. So to prevent this most states (I would presume every state) has rules against using secondary items to deny claims. Finally, insurance would still reimburse your mortgage company if they denied claims on personal property for reimbursement so throwing the mortgage company in was just silly. I could just keep on going, but the point being there are lots of scary stories about insurance but the reality is that insurance is a highly regulated industry and once you have some real insight into the industry you would be surprised how many of those big bad wolf stories are misconceptions.

I agree...download and install the plugins.

Afterwards, go to the Irfanview Toolbar and click on
"Options", "Properties" and then "Extensions".
Select these extensions:
JPG/JPEG
BMP
GIF

Now, all files with those extensions will open with
Irfanview. If you don't like it, just go back into
"Options" and undo them.

I love Irfanview for being this easy to use. :)

I too appreciate the generousity and guidance here. I am back from vacation and looking forward to the time to do many other useful things that were suggested to me a week ago (like getting firefox).

I also want to get Infranview. TxKen suggested using certain extensions. I have a friend who's a photographer and he's given me some great photos I'd like to view in Infranview. They are all .tif files. Can I view those in Infranview as well?

And here's a more basic question - when I hook my olympus camedia camera to the computer, should I download the pictures onto my computer using Infranview?

ok first lets make sure everyone is clear and gets the correct program it is IRfanview. Here is the correct site for it.

with so many rogue nasties out there copying names trying to confuse people I always like to make sure we are all on the same page.

Lynn, you can do it how ever you choose, personally when I want to put my pics from my camera on my pc I take out the memory card, stick it in my memory card reader (can be bought real cheap plugs into usb port) and just bam take them from the card to the pc super simple super quick. But that is my way. I do not like to put extra software on my pc if I don't have to so I just never put my camera software on it, I have everything I need on the pc and IRfanView does a great job.

Yes...just look at the list in Irfanview, and select 'tif'.

I use as little software as possible.
I don't even use "My Computer".
I use Windows Explorer.
In XP, Windows Explorer is located in:
Start>Programs>Accessories....
Right click it, and create a shortcut on your desktop.
Then, use Windows Explorer and when it opens, you will
see everything on your computer, not just one thing at a time as you would if you used 'My Computer'.

Now, with Windows Explorer open, I look down the list on the left, and find the item I've plugged in...a dock, a camera etc., and then click to open and I have access to all the 'stuff' on the plug-in item.
I click and drag what I need to a folder on my hard drive.
Then, I can acces those files.

It's second nature to me...might be confusing for some..but it's a much better way than trying to manage all the software that comes with added products.

Thanks Raven and Ken. Thanks for correcting the name of the program Irfanview. I never even thought of a memory card reader (or realized why I'd want one). My Canon printer has one, but I gather that is just to put photos directly for printing and viewing on the printer's lcd - not to get it to my computer (although my printer is on a wireless network with the computer).

Ken - I think I can handle selecting .tif. The rest of that is great info, but I'll have to give it a try to see if I understand it.

I'm a photographer who downloads 600-800 photos every week and I have never downloaded via the camera. Its really not a good idea anyway because the camera has to be on and if you are using the camera battery it could run out before your done. Nothing damages a memory card faster! Its always best to use a card reader or like I do use the card reader built into my HP computer. I could go directly to the drive in "My Computer", but I perfer the Windows "Scanner and Camera Wizard" which comes up automatically when I insert a card reader, memory card or flash drive. With the Wizard I can name the photos myself instead of using the generic letters and numbers the camera give them. I use dates like today it would be 80408- and when they are downloaded to the folder of my choice they start at 001 and go on from there. It makes it so easy to keep track of all my photos that way and when I took them.

Just another way of organizing and downoading photos that is simple to do.

BTW, If you do have a printer with card slots to print photos then the software installed on your computer should also allow you to download photos too which I have, but perfer using the S&C Wizzard instead ;o)

I disagree.
When I had Windows 98, I used to ALWAYS DL my photos using a USB cable from camera to computer with an adaptor plugged into the camera so not to drain the batteries which I loved the best. All set up for that.

I had trouble getting my camera software program to work on XP so have to resort to "pulling" the card out of the camera each time to insert into the memory slot of my computer (same as using card reader) which I think is more damaging to the memory card as it is "wear & tear" leaving scratches on it.
Leaving it in the camera is easier on the card.
I never had trouble where now I have to be so careful in pulling & pushing in and out not only from the camera, but the memory slot as well, which is harder on the card. Stands to reason.
I damaged a card by doing it that way opposed to years of doing it from the camera with no problem.
More work involved the camera way but worth not damaging a card over.

You misunderstood what I was saying. If you download directly from the camera and the battery dies, the camera will shut off well the photos are being transferred to the computer. That is what ruins the card! Not downloading directly from the camera.

I might add that almost every photography forum I have ever visited always recommends downloading photos using a card reader. Here is one photography site that explains it with a simple to understand explanation.

I have always removed the memory card and put it in a card reader to get my pics from there to my pc. I too was told it was the best way to do it by a professional photographer friend of mine.I Never install the software, the last thing I need is more junk on my pc.
I just find it the easiest method and it eliminates the camera from the entire equation/process which to me seems like just one added component that is not needed.
I have a stand alone usb card reader that is plugged into a usb hub on top of my desk so it is very easy to plug the card in and out. I have never had one fail or damaged.
Plus it eliminates the need to plug a usb cable into the port on the camera which can also be damaged pretty easily.
It just works well for me, simple and fast, the way I like it.

Guess I just didn't explain things well enough in my first post. If your just downloading a few photos at a time to the computer your method probably works just fine for you both, but on a larger scale its best to always use a card reader. Just make sure you have a fully charged battery in your camera if you choose to download directly from the camera. Better to be safe then sorry ;o)

One important thing to remember when you have finished transferring photos using a card reader is to instantly put the card back in the camera. Very frustrating to start taking photos only to realise the card is at home in the computer LOL.

I make sure I do that before I view my photos.

Good point owbist *lol* I've never had that problem, but I do have alot of 1 gig cards in my camera bag (never liked to keep all my eggs in one basket). I have forgot to grab my extra battery I had plugged in charging :o(

Its taught me to take an extra look around my office before I leave on a 2 hour trip north to the race track where I'm a photographer ((grin))
