OE/Windows Live Mail

This is a whopper!

As you all know, Windows 7 does not come with Outlook Express.

My server changed to using Gmail but I have been receiving the mail in OE because I have problems loading Gmail because of SLOW connection.

I have no problem with getting it through using OE what so ever. Love it!

My question (may be next to impossible to answer unless you have tried and are doing it) is: If I DL Windows Live Mail to my laptop that is suppose to be for W7, will that screw up my being able to use OE like always on my desktop?

In my mind it has to do with giving all my server info to WinLiveMail to where it would be "erased" from OE? Is it such a thing?

I don't want to run into what I did when I made the mistake of giving Hot Mail Live my server info while on my laptop and it took it away from receiving in OE on my desktop until I deleted my accounts from HotMail not knowing it took over as default without my knowing or saying to. Phew! Glad I could rectify it back.

Interesting. I did a cursory search on Google, always a good place to start, using the keywords "windows mail overwrite outlook express" (sans quotes). In what time I spent I didn't find an answer to your concern, but I was left with the first impression WM and OE don't play well together. Perhaps if more time was devoted to the search responses a definite conclusion or remedy could be obtained.

I do not know the answer because I have not used OE in ages. Hopefully someone that has had the same issue will have some ideas.
I think the key would be to be able to leave the mail on the original server and only allow access to it from other email programs but not fully remove it from there.

I know I have my gmx email client fetch my mail from one of my old msn email accounts and all it does is grab the list and show it in the gmx mail list but it still leaves the full list on the original msn email client also.

I have W 7 and WLM and I direct my server's email through WLM and I don't have any idea why yours does that, mine doesn't. I don't have an account with live, I don't like to join everything, especially social medias. You might try opening your email and the contacts listed there and try to add a contact and see if the same thing happens to it.

What JEMDANDY suggests concerning the firewalls is a huge problem these days and unless you check for it occasionally, it sneaks up on you. Here's another possibility: I don't know if your particular anti-virus program uses Sun Belt antivirus technology. If you check your task manager and see something similar to SBAMsvc.exe then, you are using it. That particular antivirus is dynamic where it checks all opened files and incoming email for virus. Unfortunately, it is also a resource hog. I'm not saying other programs don't cause the same problems. I am just particularly familiar with this one since they provide programming for a lot of the antivirus packages out there. If another company is used, the below would still help you see if that is your problem. You probably notice the hangups when you have incoming mail with attachments, especially large ones. All the resources are being used to check the mail and even a ctrl-alt-del doesn't have an impact. It actually will but it has to wait in line for it to get it's allocation of resources to launch. Sometimes you'll see your email request time out. Of course, not having an antivirus checker for email is like walking through a mall in your underware. However, the best way to see if this is your problem is to go into your antivirus software settings and turn off email checking. Once the mail has transferred over, turn it back on. This would be AFTER you have done what JEMDANDY has suggested and still have the problem. If indeed this resolves your problem you have 2 choices....do this every time before calling for your mail or, add more memory. It's unfortunate that we have to "retool" our equipment to use a product that is supposed to be helping us protect and utilize what we have. However, with the sophistication of malware and Virus attacks, the products protecting us from them have become more and more resource dependent, to keep up. You also really need to clean out your temporary internet and cache files as well as cookies. This can do the same thing you describe if they get too large.

I don't think this is the case, Pam, as I was able to view them in OE up until a couple of weeks ago. I also am not able to view in Windows Live Mail on my Win 7 machine as I had formerly been able to. Very annoying, since I hate having to use my browser to read e-mails. I also downloaded apps from the site when viewing the e-mail notification. I believe I'll re-install java and see if that is the problem.

I did get my gmail account to work in WLM, but not the way I had hoped. What I finally did was activate the 2 step verification, and chose my Windows computer as the "app" to be used. Gmail send me a verification code, and then a 16 digit password, with a space after each 4 digits, to use when asked by WLM for my password. After entering the 16 digit password, all my mail for the past six days downloaded in WLM. Instructions were that I would never need to enter this password again, but I did write it down in my little password book, just in case. What I find puzzling is that I have used WLM 12 for almost three years with the same three gmail accounts, all of which worked in the mail program. It was only on Sept. 27 that my default account stopped working and asked repeatedly for my password. At that point I had NOT done the 2 step verification, so this is very infuriating, Google! I was forced into the 2 step verification process to get gmail to recognize my computer as an approved "app".

Urlee, I have a desktop with XP and my G-mail downloads to OE. My laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium, and, after trying Thunderbird with some problems, I decided to bit the bullet and use Windows Live Mail. My G-mail downloads to it just fine and has no effect on my OE. But keep in mind that the e-mails that you get on Windows Live Mail will not download to OE also. The reverse is also true: the mail that you get in OE will not be downloaded to Live Mail. But you can continue to use OE on your XP computer and Live Mail on your new laptop with no problem.

If you leave the messages on the server, you can still access all of them via G-Mail without using either desktop mail program.

I think that was the answer I was looking for.

But keep in mind that the e-mails that you get on Windows Live Mail will not download to OE also.

I do know that if you are in a certain mail account when you are receiving mail, it lands at the account you have open provided you have those accounts allowed in and you can not get them again.
Example: If I was in Windows Live Hotmail and mail is coming in, when I close out and go to OE, the mail that came in while WLH was open to receive them, those mails will not show up in OE then as they would have had I not had WLH mail open.
But, I am assuming Windows Live Mail will not associate with OE at all from what DA posted? (Thanks DA for your time spent. Didn't mean for you to have to do that)

I am afraid to open my Hotmail account because of that incident I had (don't trust hotmail) and tried to change that addy to gmail here for Garden Web but GW won't let me so I may be missing email replies to me if sent there from here.

YAY! I'll be darned!
I just went for the heck of it and got my email changed from Hot mail To Gmail! GW excepted it this time! After trying several times B4, It finally took!
