I just don't understand this:

If you have a lot of pictures on a photo program (PictureIt, Adobe, Picassa, etc) are those pictures on your hard-drive?

I'm trying to salvage my husbands computer(an earlier post) and he has so many pictures on those programs. I can't find them on his hard drive. Is it possible to save them if I uninstall those photo programs?

He works on photos without saving the changes. The changes are showing on the photo program but not on the computer. What to do??

There are too many pictures to 'save.' Can those changes be saved some other way so they can be moved?

There must be thousands of pictures and he won't let me delete any. I backed up all the photos but need to assure him he won't lose the photos on those photo programs.

I hope someone understands what I'm trying to ask. I have no knowledge of these programs as I do not deal with photos at all. I don't know how these programs work.

His old computer is totally out of memory. He won't let me work on it because he's afraid of losing his photos.

I'm ready to stick my head in the oven....

Here are the options:
1. They're probably on different locations on the hard drive depending on which programs he is using. And it sounds like he is very disorganized, so they could be in even more locations than the main ones that the programs save to.

2. They could also be on external storage, like external hard drives or flash drives, although I suspect he doesn't use those.

3. Some of them could be stored on the Internet depending on whether he uses photo storage sites, and/or or whether some of the programs he uses store the pictures there.

If I had to guess, I'd say they are probably in a mess all over the hard drive. There are ways to find them by doing searches, by opening each program and looking at what location they typically save to, by determining what extensions the files get saved in, etc.

Unfortunately, it sounds like neither of you is knowledgeable enough to go in and unwind this in a way that guarantees all of his treasures will be saved. Unless you have a computer savvy friend that can help you figure this out, there is probably no simple way to save them all. Uninstalling the photo programs will cause more problems because many of these programs save the photos in file formats that can only be opened by that one program. So, uninstalling the program will prevent some of those files from being reopened, and could even cause some of the photos to be deleted, depending on how the uninstall worked.

The only suggestion I can give you is to buy an external hard drive that is bigger than your current hard drive, plug it in, and backup your current mess of a hard drive onto a drive with more space. However, this just postpones the problem by giving him more space for a while. How to get him to exercise some discipline is beyond my limited abilities...

I did a back-up of the computer. My question is whether the photos in 'photo-programs' will be part of the back-up? Do they exsist somewhere?

lets side step the issue for a second ... first... its YOUR house.. its YOUR yard .... BUILD A NEW HISTORY .... don't try to save trees/shrubs/etc ... for the history of it all ..been there.. done that.. what a nightmare.. until i removed all the prior owners problems .... i cant tell from the picture whether the width of the lot is defined.. on the right ... with a fence right behind the plant in question .... but i can see someone way out back .. and i see the fence on the left .... IMHO .... for what it is worth ... both plants on the right of your picture .... seriously impede the view of and use of your yard ... in my yard.. they would be totally removed .... dead.. gone .... presuming that the photographer is standing on the patio that you will be spending much time relaxing on .... why do you not want to see half of your yard .... if you see the wisdom [???.... lol] .. of that logic .... then proper ID and rescue of a much too large... poorly sited plant is irrelevant .... [BTWay ... are those two plants approaching the power lines also?] new house.. new yard .. new to the garden ... carpe yardum ... seize the yard.. start by getting rid of your problems.. start with a fresh canvas ... and think about planting something in front of that shed ... after a few adult beverages... peering out over your domain ... that thing is going to start bugging you .... lol ... may as well start hiding it this spring ..... now .. the tree on the left .... again.. cant ID it at that distance ... but it looks excessively old .... overly mature... and has a history of improper pruning ... you might want to think about removal of that one also ... every problem [your plants] has a solution [and the snow started it.. lol]... try to look beyond the immediate problem ... and focus on the potential that was created .... i know its hard for new homeowners.. and new gardeners have trouble accepting that things must die .... but my logic is.. if i replace 3 dead plants.. with 20 new plants.. mother earth is plus 17 ... dont worry about it ... my best advice ..... get out the lawn chairs .... and spend the next 60 days sitting on every inch of that patio ..... and spend time inside each window... and REALLY LOOK AT YOUR YARD .... try to imagine it with and without the plants .... move the chairs way back in the lot and look at the house ... sit everywhere .... think about what is there.. and where you want to go with it ... in the garden.. there is rarely any hurry .. we can kill that bush today .. or in spring [might want to see if it flowers] .. or in summer ... define a plan .. think it out... go to work ... good luck ken

The person my wife and I care for has had frequent bouts with incontinence, including while he's had a catheter in. It almost always involves explosive diarrhea and it's very difficult keeping one of those sterile when there's diarrhea all over it, but I digress. We've thrown away otherwise perfectly good jeans they were so completely engulfed in it. When he goes through these periods, we stock up on disposable underwear and make sure we buy the "underwear" type with an elastic waistband and elastic around the leg openings. Depends are the name most are familiar with but we typically buy the store brand from the local drug store, in our case, Walgreen's. They generally keep the worst of it inside, so the main issue is cleaning him up, which needs to be done regardless. We also buy him less expensive sweats and flannel pajama pants to wear so if we have an episode where it's very bad, we're not tossing $30-$40 jeans. Above all, don't be embarrassed. It's a fact of your life and something that is neither your or his fault. It's just a hand you and he have been dealt, something that life has given you to cope with. Caring for a loved one whose health is in decline and all the speed bumps it involves is something to be applauded(For lack of a better word), not to be ashamed of. It requires love and dedication that some can't bring themselves to deal with. The ones who can't cope or dedicate themselves are the ones that should be embarrassed. Good luck to you both.

Your photos live on your hard drive, but they do not live in Photoshop or in any photo program - those programs only LINK to the photos on your hard drive.

Jane,

picFinder is a zip file, at the site click the downlaod. Than save file to Desktop. Once it's there right click the file choose extract, I would extract it to cause your going to get an option where to extract to programs files folder. Then run the program.

You could also search the hard drive, using start >search and search for these file extensions gif, .jpg, .bmp, .ico, or .wmf

Picasa--> this program will automatically search the drive for photos. I have used it for only that reason.

I will not certify that all the pictures are in the same location as edited photos, collages and specialty photos could be in a separate place. Plus, when applications were configured the target location could have been changed.

In general they are all on the H/D in the Picture Folder located in the Windows User folder or the Documents folder. I currently have Irfanview, Picasa, and Windows Photo gallery, and they all find the pictures in that folder.
All these applications have default configuration.

When all else fails, you could always do a search for jpeg, tiff, etc. That would be long and tedious.

Jane, I think the reason you can't find them on his hard drive might be because he has transferred them to photo programs and deleted from the HD.

It is my understanding that these photo sites function as web based storage for photos, just like web based email sites (Yahoo!, g-mail, MSN) store your email on their site. Neither are actually on your computer.

I think you could test this by accessing his photo sites with a completely different computer. I don't know about the sites he's using (mine are on Photobucket) but I like to store things that way because I lost a computer to a sudden lightning strike once. Those sites still had my email and pictures. Sandy

Thank you all. I discovered if I R-click on a photo a menu appears 'locate on disk.' I found many pictures that way. Many do not show up.

If the original was downloaded directly to a photo program (Picasa, Photoshop, PictureIt) the original is on the disk. But after he edits the picture, if he doesn't 'save' it, I don't think the edited version is on the disk.

My plan is to uninstall the photo programs, clean up the computer, maybe reformat, add memory and then reinstall the photo programs. If I uninstall the photo programs, will the edited photos be lost? There are too many to 'save' to My Pictures.

What a job...
