If he gets here before I decide between the ceramic tile I bought or the travertine I really want, I bet I have to defend my Kerdi again! Bill, no kiddin' on the "..box of rocks" comment. Guy comes to bid Milestone countertops, looks at my shower & said "What's that"? I said "Kerdi, ever heard of it". He said "No, what made you decide to use that?" "Because I want a waterproof shower". As he walked over & pulled on -my yet-to-be-thinsetted-niche-flap, "You're going to have trouble with this". Had to ask him not to be pulling on my Kerdi (ownership alert!)etc & he wants considered for my for my kitchen counters. Go figure!

You had a contractor and a tile installer ... there is your "help" right there. They are the experienced professionals and should be advising you as to what will work and what won't. The tile installer, if he knew anything about tile at all, should have advised you about how the edges of the tile would look without trim. That he went ahead and laid it that way and left it that way is ridiculous. It looks bad and reflects badly on him. Vote for StoneTech's solution, and while I like Tre's, too, I'd be concerned about losing available space inside the niche if the tile wasn't demo'd first. If setting a prefab box on top of the existing tile, I'd make sure there was room for the size of the shampoo bottles you intend to store there.

It's me you're thinking of. Four different tile guys could not figure out how to get the glass tile to stick, so I had tear it out and start over. Went with travertine instead. The Kerdi reps and the glass tile rep both confirmed after installation of Kerdi and after purchase of glass tiles that they were not a good combo. It was a very wasteful and irritating part of my build. I even bought samples of the glass tile and made my first tile guy tell me that he would have no problems with the installation before I purchase all of the glass tile. So much for his word. I purchased by glass tiles from Susan Joblan online. The tiles come with a clear paper face. When we went to pull the clear paper off the tiles, more than 50% of the tiles came with it. In other words, the tiles continued to stick to the paper instead of the wall. And this was waiting a full four weeks with the tiles on the wall before the paper was pulled off. Plenty of time to stick. If you decide to attempt the glass tiles over Kerdi, go with a different type of glass tile. Here is a link that might be useful: Glass Tile with Kerdi Post

An off the cuff idea that might work? You could take a drain like this that is larger than your original, toss the threaded "nut", cut/grind down the threaded throat to the needed height (essentially the thickness of your new thinset/tile), and insert it when you set your new tile. Remove the original drain's grate. Aside comment: depending on what metal the drain is made out of, prime/coat any cut metal edges to prevent rust.
