Shower repair help please

This is a small shower, 30 by 30" and 3 walls.

About 4 years ago I ripped the tiles out on the 3 walls because the "regular drywall" the builder put up was sagging!

I put plywood up, new washer less tap, and for each 3 walls, one piece wonderboard.

Everything turned out nice, except now the plastic base has a little crack and I'm afraid it's leaking a bit.

Not sure yet what I'm going to do.

Yesterday I went around looking for ideas, I wanted to go with a one piece fibreglass, but it makes everything

smaller on the inside!

Perhaps just fix the plastic base, take it out or put something over ??

Would a good vinyl overlay be OK?

Or start from scratch!

Any ideas?

Hello Konrad,
Where is this crack? Some cracks can be repaired in place while others require a complete replacement. In the future, there is no need to install plywood behind cement board. If the stud structure is inadequate to provide proper anchoring, just add a few more studs and/or blocking. A 6 mil plastic sheeting should be installed on the studs before the cement board is installed though.

The hairline crack is in the plastic base, a few inches of the center and about 4 inches long.
Oh..and also where the crack is, the shower base is not solid, [flexing].
My wife just said the outer color on the wonderboard is coming off a little...shoot!
I was searching for a new tub /shower base, something better then plastic, I'm thinking all fibreglass, but
couldn't find anything!

Thanks. I see how the handle puller will work for the lavatory handles but not for the single handle kitchen faucet. The center shaft would have to go right into the handle. Do they make a different kind for that or is there some other trick ? I thought of fitting a wood brace under it and tapping the brace with a hammer.

An improperly built shower is only cured by ripping it ALL out and starting over. The cost difference is usually insignificant as the labor to bandaid something to an existing installation is higher than doing it all right from the beginning. Yes, it's a bit more in material costs, but material costs pale in comparison to the labor costs. Especially if you hire a knowledgeable tile technician in the first place. Only a hack would do the halfassedjob that you're wanting to do. Anyone worth their salt will flat out tell you what Cabot&Rowe did above.

+1 to Todd. That sill stop is probably about $10 if you can't or don't feel like rehabbing that one. It's just nailed on, pry if off gently and replace if it's me.

There is a drain by the one next door to me too, but, it was still ruining the doors and a small amount was running into their basement level, close to the door. They are in process of building a screened in room over theirs, and there is a full roof on the screened room. There really isnt much else you can do but just keep on repairing. Has anyone else had that problem in your neighborhood?

I have knocked out, .. what I think it's a acrylic base, just to see what going on, it's what I have suspected,
there was a tiny leak and no mortar underneath!

Not sure what I should do now, start over with a new base or put in tiles over mortar?
Does anybody know of a better base then acrylic, 32 x32"

You may want to consider using a Terrazzo Shower Base. These are very nice, but do have some considerations... They are heavy, need a solid foundation and are a bit pricey. To my knowledge there are four manufacturers:
Acorn Engineering
Creative Industries Terrazzo
Fiat
Florestone

Creative offers a variety of colors
Fiat can do stainless flanges
Florestone has a higher (non-threshold) lip than the others and will do additional flanges.

I am replacing an old Fiat with a Florestone in my house (36" Neo-Angle) because they put an additional tiling flange on for me (although they won't do stainless) and the higher lip seems like a smart idea.
