trouble turning on computer

The computer works fine once it's on, but I have to press the button on the tower approx. three times to get it to boot up. Anyone know what this is all about? thanks!

Hard to say without more information.

What happens when you push the power button on the first two tries?

Does it try to boot or does anything at all happen?

I have had something similar happen on one of my pc's.

It got to where you had to push the power button .. more and more times.

Once it started to boot .. It started taking longer and longer to boot fully!

It ended up being a hard drive .. going bad.

Perhaps the switch behind the button is not returning fully after being pressed to start. This would create the need to press harder to activate the link.

How old is the computer?
Make and model?
Are there an strange noises once the thing is running?

I've always wanted to be on a jury, but have never been asked to. My son's presence was requested in our county when he was 21, in the army and stationed in Germany. Wow, there is a lot of good information here. Glad I posted with my problem, now I have something new to try out. Thanks owbist. ravencajun, thanks for the compliment but I only had the first half of it figured out and cboy came to the rescue and helped me with the last half of it. I can't take all the credit. "Smiles" Then zep516 came in catching the fact that System Restore wasn't working right and gave me great information on how to correct that. This was the first time that I've had problems with my desktop, but I have changed the backround on it before and I remembered that and I thought why not check it out and see if I could get it to change and that is when I discovered that the backround had been changed and all I had to do was to put it back like I had it, but then I didn't know how to get the icons back and that's when cboy posted the solution for me. If that ever happens to me again I will know exactly what to do. Thanks owbist for telling me how to move the icons down to the taskbar. I will try that on Wednesday, I will have more time to try it out then. thirdfrt!!!

I shut the computer down every night. I also unplug it during bad storms. We had a house fire that was caused by the toaster oven. The oven was plugged it, but not turned on. I won't leave any small appliances plugged in now and if I could unplug my microwave oven more easily, I'd keep that unplugged, too. I don't trust things to flip breakers or blow fuses. It took me a long time to get over the intense smell of smoke. We nearly lost a cat in that fire and the only reason we didn't was a fluke in timing. I got home just as the kitchen was going up in flames and I was able to put it out before the fire dept arrived. I had to try to put it out because we didn't have a telephone at the time. (Rental house, for short period, trying to save on expenses, stupid!) After I got it out, I had to run to the high school to get someone to call the FD to double check it was out. Then I had to pack all our smelly belongings so we could move out that day, no way could we stay there. That was a horrible, scary day and all because of a small appliance. My parents have a nifty system, Pops put an outlet/surge protector strip on the counter, behind the small appliances, and they are all plugged into it and it is plugged in. They turn it on as needed, but it's always off when nothing is being used.

have you cleaned the insides of the computer recently? because dust bunnies can accumulate and get in those contacts and make them not contact as they should, I had one that got where I had to hold the button in for a while till the green light beside it lit up, instead of just push and let go. If it has not been blown out and the dust cleaned out in over a year then it is time to do that anyway.

Thanks everyone. Computer was just cleaned and checked out in June when I had a problem with it. It's 4 1/2 yrs old. I'm not sure of the make,etc., as I bought it at a local place that builds them. There are no strange noises when I'm online. It doesn't do anything when I first press the button-just stays dead! Then, after I press it a couple times it will boot up. I have a feeling it may be ready for a replacement!

The power switches on modern PC cases are "momentary". When you press the switch, it sends power to a relay closes another circuit causing the computer to boot.

The switch is probably going bad, although it could be the power supply or motherboard. Hard to tell exactly without more tests.
