I want to thank everyone who answered my post, however I still need help. I cannot connect to the internet via wireless or directly. I purchased a Cisco wireless USB plug type wireless adapter and plugged it in to the laptop hoping to get a wireless connection, nothing. I tried tapping F8 and connecting to Goggle as 1` post suggested, nothing. Get same message cannot connect to the internet. When I use the automatic repair feature I get a message saying they cannot fix problem and suggest I call my internet provider( Time Warner) When I call them I am told nothing is wrong with my internet service, which is true because I can access it by wireless or by direct connecting using other computers. Is there anyway to fix this laptop. Road Runner is my internet vehicle and my laptop uses windows Vista . Any suggestions or advice will be deeply appreciated. Iggie

Have you power cycled your network yet? I'm not remembering your earlier post.

Unplug power to your modem and router.
After waiting for 1 minute, plug in the modem only and let it get connected to the internet. Typically you will see the light go steady rather than blinking. Plug in the router and wait about 2 minutes before attempting to connect to your wireless network.
Make sure that you are keying in the network password exactly as it is entered in the router security setup, upper case letters are not the same as lower case letters, everything must be keyed in perfectly. If you enter it incorrectly, you could get no error and no internet connection.

You may also want to try the reset button on the wireless router.

when I had my HP I let it do the updates and never had any problems, usually it is to keep things updated so you do not run into problems with things getting out dated and often it could be to fix a hole that could be a security issue. I was able to click on the individual items and see what they were for.

Thanks for the responses ! For some reason the problem is not present today. Or I should say "problems." The two issues (the clicking sound when depressing a key and the inability to press the same key twice without pausing for a couple seconds) both resolved themselves (proving at least that they must have been related). grandms, It's an HP laptop, so the keyboard is integrated. It was not listed as a separate device in the Printers and Other Hardware section. And the Device Manager (which I also checked) didn't have anything of import either. :-( genes, Yes, she already has that, as well as Avira AV and SAS. I will be running those scans for her soon. I only asked my question before doing so in case anyone might have known of this issue and knew it to have some other obvious cause. Well, for now it's a mystery. But if my scans find anything I'll post an update, just for information's sake. Thanks again !

saying the wireless capability of this computer is not turned on. That's the problem, it's telling you what the problem is. I wonder if the switch is bad, I'd still follow all the very good instruction given and take it a step further too. Boot the computer to Safe Mode with Networking and see if a connection will be granted there. The reason for doing this is to see if a third party program, most likely an Anti Virus program, or even the windows Firewall is causing issue. To do that: Restart the computer, keep tapping the F8 Key, wait for the black screen with white letters to show. Using your arrow key select from the list Safe Mode With Networking. Once selected or highlighted hit enter. Now try connecting briefly. Don't surf in this mode. If it connects let us know. Joe

if it has windows 7 on it and you need any type of help this is the absolute best place to go they have an entire tutorials library all set up and can answer all the questions Windows 7 Forums. of course you can come ask us for help at the computer help area here at GW too.

The other thing to try is to reinstall the network adapter from device manager, enter device manager> find the wireless adapter>right click on it and choose "Uninstall" reboot the computer. Windows will reinstall it.

This exercise may help too,

Windows 7 and Vista

From the Start menu, select Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.Double-click Network and Sharing Center.

From the list of tasks on the left, click Change adapter settings (in Windows 7), or Manage network connections (in Vista).

For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.

For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.

From the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties.

Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.
