Is 'clean steel' better than stainless steel?

Hello All,

I thought I had FINALLY picked out my new frg - Whirlpool Gold FD bottom freezer in SS, but...then I saw a GE with "clean steel". I know it is not stainless steel and it doesn't show all of the marks associated with SS, but does it scratch easily? My other concern is that if I go with clean steel, will I really see a difference if I get an over-the-range microwave in stainless steel? I am sure that, side by side, there will be a difference. Just trying to get folks' opinion. Also, has anyone had any experience with the 25.8 cf GE FD bottom freezer model #GFSS6KEX or similar? If so, has it performed well? Any repair issues? I really like the layout of the GE and the drawers and shelves seem to glide more easily. Any insight into FD bottom freezers would be greatly appreciated!!!

This is the model we ordered, but haven't had it delivered yet. After looking at all the choices out there, this one seemed to suit our needs the best, but I can't speak to actual usage as yet. Delivery is 10/2.

I think the clean steel will blend with stainless fairly well, it doesn't shine quite like stainless, but it has the silver metallic appearance - just duller. If you are wanting matchy matchy, it may not be the one for you as far as pairing it up with real SS.

We recently bought a GE CleanSteel dishwasher. The major difference is, you get the look of SS, but it won't leave fingerprints and has the ability to hold magnets. Cleanup is a breeze. Are stainless steel hoses better than rubber hoses?

Stainless steel hoses are just a braided exterior jacket. They're typically the same rubber inside as non-jacketed hoses. The braided jacket is supposed to supply additional strength against the rubber bursting ... which can happen but washer hoses are more likely to fail/leak at the ferrules or connectors at the ends which the braided jacket doesn't help.

Thanks. I did a lot more digging late last night and realized that it was not going to work for us to do a "wrapped" fridge. I wonder about those stainless panels (and also the stainless-look skins). There are lots of versions of stainless, and of course I'd want the sides to look like the front. I guess I'd get samples and then decide. The main reason I want to know is that if I don't have to do wood panels, I will have a touch more space for either fridge width or cabinet next to fridge. Hrmm.

It does not matter- art doesn’t match furniture. You could use a glass console, mahogany, or even brass and the art (as long as you like it) still goes. Pick the nicer of the two tables that work with your other furniture.

Socalusa - if you wouldn't mind following up on this thread what your initial thoughts are to your new frig purchase, I would really appreciate it.

Tom p pa - thank you for the link! Terrific information. I definitely know from my research that the clean steel is cheaper but don't want issues with rust, dirt, etc. getting into scratches like the article said.
