I'm not sure what that shape is, but I can weigh in on the ice maker question now, thanks to help from other members on this site. There are 2 types - although the names "ice maker" and "ice machine" seem to be used almost randomly depending on the manufacturer.
Drain ones require either a spot to drain into easily, or a pump. They produce clear ice, are $$, and produce a lot of ice - 30-40 lbs. More than I needed. The cubes tend to be smaller round ones.
The ones that do not require a drain are basically mini-freezers and produce more like 12 lbs of ice. The cubes are not clear, and are crescent shape. They are still expensive, but can be more reasonable than the ones that produce clear cubes.
Many posters questioned whether a household really needed that much ice, but, of course, that is something only you can answer. Some suggested a second basic frig, with an ice maker, in a utility room, or garage. So, lots of choices. (wow - I learned a lot from this site, as always!)

Sorry about that, I did see after re-reading my OP it sounded like a question about a ice machine.

Ha! Communication is everything isn't? Funny! Also about our own perspective -- if I had seen your question before I had researched ice machines, I probably would have assumed you meant an ice maker in a frig.
One suggestion -- when I was considering an undercounter ice machine, I was looking at a KA one online, and I went to the "contact" menu, emailed them, and asked for a photo of the interior of the machine (all the photos on their web site were of the exterior only). They emailed back several photos that same day. So, I think you could try that - either ask about the shape of the cubes and/or ask for photos. Good luck!

We have the Kitchen Aid Architech II French Door Bottom Freezer. We have the internal refrigerator water & ice maker in the freezer (not the door). The ice is a half-moon or crescent shape. It is about 3/4 inch at thickest & 2 1/2 inches long -- not that you asked, but I'm sitting right here & the ruler is here . . . If this is the ice source you are looking for I'm interested in how they came up with the name "Tempest"? Marketing . . .

Just noting advantages/disadvantages of dedicated ice-makers....

Advantages....

1) Ice that is shaped other than crescent. Majority of ice-makers make crescent-shaped "cubes" that suck up to the walls of any cylindrical glass (aren't they all?) that you're drinking from and make imbibing a more-than-occasional nuisance. Actual cubes or circular cubes don't do this. Sounds pretty trivial but it surely is nice. I would not consider a dedicated Ice-maker that produced crescent-cubes.

2) Clear ice. Mo/betta if RO or other processed-water used. Clear ice is absolutely where its at.

3) Lots of ice, quickly. Dedicated machines can really put out compared with ref. devices. If you have a need for volume, there really is no substitute.

Disadvantages...

1) "Wet" ice. Which is to say soft ice. Dedicated ice-makers typically produce ice at just a little below freezing. That's part of how they keep it clear and part of how they produce as much as quickly as they do. The product is not as cold as the zero-or-below product of ref. ice-makers.

2) Waste water. The ice produced is constantly melting...hence the need for drains or drain-pumps. You're going to be wasting a LOT of water.

3) Unless you're careful you may find that your chosen machine makes a LOT of noise. Very common complaint.

4) Expense. RV ice machines can be had at Wal-Mart for $150.00...and they work astonishingly well. Cabinet-installed machines for the home are priced almost like whole refrigerators.....and have all the inconveniences plus a drain or pump required. Need to decide just how important it is.

5) Like ref. ice-makers, they tend to be troublesome.

Yes Maks_2000 I was wondering the shape of the cubes, and your measuring them for me made me giggle, but that was the info I was looking for so thank you. :)

I know when we were looking at the fridges one had a picture of the clear cylinder cubes with the little holes in the middle of them on the fridge. Was not sure it it was the Kitchaid but now maybe it was the Electrolux.

Blueberryisland and asolo I appreciated your info on the ice machines. Really interesting and I think I may look into the RV ice maker to see if it's suited for a bar type setting.

I've known several of these. If you've got sufficient counter-space, I think you may be impressed. All self-contained, no drain, and they really do work well. Just plug it in and pour water in it. Unless your tap water is especially good (mine isn't) suggest using bottled water or RO water.

My dedicated (late) ice machine under the counter made beautiful little 3/4"x3/4" square clear ice. Lovely to look at and easy to chew.

I have a an 18" kitchen aid ice maker, and approximately at 9:30 every night the Icemaker cycles for about an hour. Pumps water in, then drains the water, pumps it in, then drains it out. Repeated numerous time. Any idea on what the cause is? Makes ice during the day, but at night, this thing goes haywire?

Possibly a cleaning cycle but seems odd it'd run daily.
