XP to Win8

Happy 4th of July to all.

I ran across a ad from Microsoft that will allow one to upgrade from X-P to Windows 8 Pro for $40.00. Is that in the same category as "Too good to be true?"

Also, I would like to know if my 10 year old HP Pavilion a420n could handle the upgrade. I have a AMD 2.16 processor, 160 GB hard drive and 1000 MB of memory.

Yes indeed, Happy 4th to all our neighbours to the south of us.

I would be very much amazed if that were correct, but of course it could be genuine.

I prepurchased Win 7 months before it's release and I think it was $129 for Win7 Professional and an upgrade not a full copy.

You would probably be disappointed with the performance I would think but at $40 if legit it may well be worth the gamble. The main question would be, what would you do with the program if it failed to meet your needs on this computer? Being an upgrade you cannot install it on a new build unless you have a full version of something less than Win 8 to validate.

You can not upgrade from xp to 7 or 8 it must be a full wipe clean and full install.
I would doubt that pc would be able to run 8.
I also don't know of any offer like that can you post a link to it?

There's a configuration page for checking if a pc can run 7 there may be one for 8.

You have more nerve then I do. I also was forced to upgrade from the wonderful XP this week. After seeing 8.1 I was aghast at how far removed it was from my XP experience. I don't do any outside gadgets, don't even know how to take a picture on my cell phone, so this touchy feeley thing is way out of my league. I located a new computer with Windows 7 available in it, hired a guy to hook it up and am cussing my way through 7 now. I lost my old (but loved and user friendly) photo processing program to boot. Will have to deal with that when picture taking season is upon me....Julia, it sounds like you had at least had enough experience with the touchy gadgets to not be shocked by no mouse (LOL). It is possible the headset is too old. With Windows 8 when a new USB device is plugged a small pop up appears in the lower right corner telling you it is installing the drivers. did you notice that? You made sure sound was coming from the computer before using the headset right? If so did you use the same sound source to check the headset? Hover (or what ever touch screens want) in the lower right corner and when the flyout appears click the settings cog, click Control panel, click Hardware and Sound and have a looksee in there for the USB headset.

Thanks for the responses. We have a Win8 sitting on a shelf collecting dust for 2 years. Never use it anymore. We also have 4 XP's and a Win 7. I've used Win 7 (hubbys machine), but prefer XP. I don't know if I'm resistant to change, I like to think I'm not. But I think Win 8 is dumb and would take me a lot of time to navigate it. I've used it. Did not try classic shell. Hate all the icons and not finding the frequently used places hidden. I don't like the disappearing tool bars. I just think its dumb and regret ever buying it. I don't see any reason for MS to change things around which takes precious time to figure out. Things like Add/Remove, various other settings...it all takes time out of your life to play around when you have work to do. You can buy a new car, it might have added extras and new things which take time to learn. But, no matter what car it is, when you open the door, put the key in the ignition, move the transmission to D, it goes. You can drive around and worry about learning the 'extras' later. You can press on the gas pedal and it goes. To have to learn another operating system and where MS decided to hide things, call them by other names is ridiculous. Same with their Office Programs. They are expensive and complicated to use. Yet they change them around ever few weeks. Why? I do a lot of work on my computers. I don't like having to learn all over again when I have things to do. I didn't like Visa at all, but had to deal with it. I kept my XP because I had Office 07 and I could put together a bunch of letters and newsletter quickly. I gave Vista away and went back to XP exclusively. I wonder if Apple changes their Macs every 3 years? Have no idea but am getting tempted to take a look at their computers. That's my rant, sorry if I seem to be the only one who is very upset with Microsoft for all this nonsense. Jane

Once you learn the new terminology, the difference between Start screen and Desktop, and determine where things are located it is fine. For me, it is actually fun facing the challenge of doing something new for a change as XP is obsolete, and Vista and W7 were so much alike. Jane, Tip #1 is when you learn something has been renamed, discover something in a new location, or discover something altogether new write the information down. It is really frustrating to sit there and know you have seen it, but don't remember where. Tip #2 is the Windows key toggles you back and forth between the Desktop and the Start screen. In W8.1 the white windows logo located down where the START button use to be on the Desktop screen will take you to the Start Screen Tip #3 is go to the Desktop. Right click on a vacant area of the Taskbar. On the appearing window select Properties. Review the Navigation tab as there are additional viewing options available. Hmm, I should have checked before posting as it seems genuine. However here is an interesting perspective you might want to read. Googling 'upgrade to win 8' brings up a number of articles, I simply used the first one I read.

I stand corrected, this is NOT an ad from Microsoft. It is very similar to the site posted by Owbist.

The computer is old, but it still works. Would you folks recommend using X-P until I have a full blown failure?

They seem to be offering some good deals on Windows 8 upgrades. I recently bought a new pc got this offer: Windows Upgrade Offer.
I went to the site to register but it is not ready yet. Left my email address so they could notify me when it is ready. I won't be in any hurry to upgrade but it is a good offer. So far from what I've read they seem to be tailoring windows 8 for tablets and touchscreens and I'm not interested in those.

Yes any new pc purchase currently are being offered that upgrade option it is good till January. Definitely worth paying that price.

As long as you have xpsp3 you are okay till 2014 for getting windows updates. If you aren't having problems keep on going.

I found this for (MS) minimum requirements for Win8...and we all know how well there Min suggested requirements for WinXP was when it first came out..Believe they said at the time 128MB and the system would run smoothly with 500MB.
Here they are:
Ã¯Â¿Â½1 GHz or faster processor
Ã¯Â¿Â½1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
Ã¯Â¿Â½16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Ã¯Â¿Â½DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Thanks to all who answered, this is truly a great group.
I think I will stay with X-P, it does everything I need it to do, just much slower than when new.

You could always wipe the hard drive and start squeaky clean again.

Be advised if you have less than an XP SP3 CD then you are looking at downloading SP3 and at last count 117 updates on one I did last week.

Sometimes I feel it is worth the effort as long as you make sure you have all your data backed up.
