Win 8 - just wondering...

How everyone is liking it (or not)?

I bought a Win 8 laptop for hubby, he took one look at it and went back to work on his XP.

I took one look at it and put it in the closet. Its been there for 6 months now. Collecting dust and, I guess, tons of updates.

Trying to figure whether I have the energy or time to figure out how to use it.

Would appreciate comments on how folks are liking this new version.

I bought Windows 8 just before the $48 sale ended and installed it. Then I did as you have done, ignored it for a few months. But then I decided that was foolish and got to work with it and found once the initial resentment at the changes were overcome it was no problem at all.

When the main screen with the large icons is present moving the mouse to the corners is useful, also on that screen simply start to type the name of the needed program and a pop up appears where you can click your choice to open the program. Just 2 little aids that seemed to work for me.

Once you learn the new terminology, the difference between Start screen and Desktop, and determine where things are located it is fine. For me, it is actually fun facing the challenge of doing something new for a change as XP is obsolete, and Vista and W7 were so much alike.

Tip #1 is when you learn something has been renamed, discover something in a new location, or discover something altogether new write the information down. It is really frustrating to sit there and know you have seen it, but don't remember where.

Tip #2 is the Windows key toggles you back and forth between the Desktop and the Start screen. In W8.1 the white windows logo located down where the START button use to be on the Desktop screen will take you to the Start Screen

Tip #3 is go to the Desktop. Right click on a vacant area of the Taskbar. On the appearing window select Properties. Review the Navigation tab as there are additional viewing options available.

AZ, I understand what you are saying, but Emma makes a lot of sense. If users are not prepared for progress we would all still be using Commodores or in the least Win3.1. We have a whole bunch of Dell XP SP2 systems in our building. Six in our office alone. Ours are going to be replaced by a governmental entity due to security, non-MS software demand, and future anticipated expansion. You can bet many of the other offices will have to replace their systems via their budget as their offices have systems integrated for use with our data. And, we did survive without a burp when we switched from Win98 and Win2000 to WinXP. Bobbie, Hope you are sitting down. You know how I was dragged kicking and screaming into the post Win98 era as I loved my Win98 system. And, yes you know I love my Vista system even more and have defended it for all the bad publicity it received. My plans right now is to buy a entry to mid-level laptop with W8 just so I can play. See why I said I hope you were sitting down. Even though I think there is way too much going on now with the Internet, and can only guess as to what the future will bring we users have a choice. Be part of it or allow it to pass us by. Do I think everyone with a W7 should race out and purchase a W8? Of course not. However, two generations of O/S behind could become the future limit. DA

I didn't have any special problems turning up my Gateway Laptop with W8 a few months back. The biggest problems I had was learning (trial and error) to make one of the W8 tiles a start for Firefox (browser). When this is done the desktop converts to a W7 look. Yea, there's a lto of other "goodies" and I slowly started using them. In spite of the fact that it sometimes facilitates my crashing a dialog via my browser I love the "smart" touch pad. I find it hard using W7 laptop not being able to scroll using two fingers on the touch pad - I guess that's the feature I use the most. The last and only time I was ready to throw out a new notebook, an Acer, was when I couldn't get Vista to set up an network interface (best I can recall, these years later). But as I had purchased it from Walmart I just took it back and said I didn't want it - they refunded my purchase price. I found a demo laptop with XP and purchased it - that was my first Gateway.

Thanks for the responses. We have a Win8 sitting on a shelf collecting dust for 2 years. Never use it anymore. We also have 4 XP's and a Win 7. I've used Win 7 (hubbys machine), but prefer XP. I don't know if I'm resistant to change, I like to think I'm not. But I think Win 8 is dumb and would take me a lot of time to navigate it. I've used it. Did not try classic shell. Hate all the icons and not finding the frequently used places hidden. I don't like the disappearing tool bars. I just think its dumb and regret ever buying it. I don't see any reason for MS to change things around which takes precious time to figure out. Things like Add/Remove, various other settings...it all takes time out of your life to play around when you have work to do. You can buy a new car, it might have added extras and new things which take time to learn. But, no matter what car it is, when you open the door, put the key in the ignition, move the transmission to D, it goes. You can drive around and worry about learning the 'extras' later. You can press on the gas pedal and it goes. To have to learn another operating system and where MS decided to hide things, call them by other names is ridiculous. Same with their Office Programs. They are expensive and complicated to use. Yet they change them around ever few weeks. Why? I do a lot of work on my computers. I don't like having to learn all over again when I have things to do. I didn't like Visa at all, but had to deal with it. I kept my XP because I had Office 07 and I could put together a bunch of letters and newsletter quickly. I gave Vista away and went back to XP exclusively. I wonder if Apple changes their Macs every 3 years? Have no idea but am getting tempted to take a look at their computers. Hi there, off-centre, We got yer back, kid! How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation. Gonna have to change that, though, I think. ole joyful

Thanks for the tips. Its still buried in the closet. I just don't have the energy. Probably a days worth of updates and I remember I couldn't even find Control Panel.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the operating system. Was it a dumb move by MS? Any chance MS will come out with a new, easier design soon? Might just let it sit if something new is in the works.

There are a few different bandaids, including the new 8.1 update, that some find more suitable.

It is what it is. Unless you plan to change to Apple products (which have their own learning curve for a Windows user), it's gonna be a loong wait.

Development and progress will continue forward. W8 is fine. Just like anything else you have to spend some time with it and learn.
