We are fine the Shirley Complex fire is up on the other side of the mountain about 40 miles from us more towards Glenville. They have it under control enough to send crews to other fires. The town is still busy with firemen and truck everywhere but thatâÂÂs not almost normal for us in the summer.
The bigger problem with the storm is it washed out the canyon road in several places but it did reopen 1 lane today. They have to rebuild the road bed but IâÂÂm not planning on going down anytime soon. We have more thunder storms coming next week.
ItâÂÂs getting to be my favorite time of the year. School starts, it will finally cool down, the tourists go home and itâÂÂs nice and quiet.
Thanks again for thinking of me I thought about you during and after Sandy and was happy when you finally got back to normal.
Knock on wood we havenâÂÂt had any bad fires so far this year. The road is quite a ride if you are not used to it but in the 30 something years we have lived up here the only time my DH couldnâÂÂt get to work in Bakersfield was when it was snowing in Bakersfield but not up here. He made it half way down the canyon and had to turn around. It was closed for 3 months in 1985 when a wall of rock came down. We do have another way that the news never says to use that makes the canyon look like a freeway. Its 9 miles of straight down switch backs on a road not wide enough for 2 cars and cows everywhere but itâÂÂs very pretty.
Thanks for checking in, Claudia. I tried to pinpoint the fire on the NOAA maps but didn't know exactly where your house is located, only the town. Loss of the highway looks like PITA for a few weeks. I hope the State gets right on rebuilding. I know you're prepared to hunker down for awhile - good thing getting to Bakersfield isn't a priority.
Is the Rim Fire (Yellowstone) quite a ways south of you? Do you know if they are losing any sequoias? Makes me sick. The fires are bad this year and fire season is just getting started. :(
Take care and hope you don't get lightning or heavy rainfall next week.
The Rim Fire in a little over 200 miles north of us just outside of Yosemite but they are reporting it has crossed into the park. I hope we donâÂÂt lose any of the sequoias. A couple of them fell over in the Trail of 100 Giants up near us a few years ago and lightening started a fire there last week but they put it out quickly. I love the big trees itâÂÂs always fun to take kids up there that have never seen them.
We have smoke this morning not sure if itâÂÂs the Shirley Complex fire near Glenville the Rim Fire or possibly from one up in the Golden Trout Wilderness that they are just keeping an eye on and letting burn.
The good news is for the first time ever they outlawed any open fires anywhere in the forest, even the camp grounds, at the start of fire season. The tourists are not happy about it but its sure has made a difference in the amount of fires that we have had so far this summer. With the lake and river being so low this year the tourists are not happy about much of anything.
