Gmail - Trouble Adding new Addresses to Existing Group

I searched Gmail help before posting here and can't find an answer that helps me. I have one gmail contact group that has about 120 names/addresses. I tried to update it (which was a year overdue) and had about 50 email names to add. I had to cull through many saved emails to find all these contacts. I thought I had opened the pre-existing group and was adding contacts - just to discover that they didn't get added at all. I still had the list of new names and tried to save it as group 2 - but only the last entered email address got saved. Before I do this again, I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

When I go to Gmail instructions, it says go to contacts, then int he right hand portion, click the drop-down menu for groups. Nothing happens when I click this drop down menu - it's not active. Gmail suggests that if these instructions don't work, I may not have the latest version. It said, go to accounts and select get new version. Two problems with this - first, I think I do have the new version. Second, I don't see that option on the accounts page.

I don't even see a place to check which version I have.

Thanks.

Lynn.
