Sea glass for shower floor--any problems?
Comments (7)Etched glass like sea glass is a nightmare to get soap scum off of. Just think of how hard it is to remove hard water deposits and soap scum from a large piece of etched glass like a shower door. Now reduce that task to nickel sized pieces that are difficult to access and that you can't use a razor blade scraper on. If you live where your water is soft and you use only liquid soaps and never any bar soap, and use a very well sealed grout that can hold up to aggressive cleaning and have the time to clean well, then I think it would be really pretty. Not for me. But pretty....See Moregrout staining issues with mosaic 1x1 tiles?
Comments (4)onelady1dog2girls asks: "How does this epoxy grout compare with traditional trouts? Can you use it on a glass mosaic?" Epoxy grout: (1) requires more preparation and care in installation, which means that many tile installers will refuse to install it; (2) is a much less receptive host to mildew and mold than cementious grout; (3) does not shrink; (4) is easier to clean than cementious grout; (5) never requires sealant. We did use epoxy grout with small glass tiles. Comments (5)If the manufacturer recommends against it, and another poster who has first-hand experience with the tiles recommends against it, but your designer is still for it and you're still considering siding with your designer... ...no, you're not being too conservative at all! (not a slam, I'm trying to inject a bit of humor in there.) Designers have vision, and those that go against their vision? Pox on those that defy the designer. Your designer should be designing for a kid's needs and your needs. If both the manufacturer and a person familiar with this tile say that using this tile on a floor could result in raised sharp edges and the designer still wants to use it? Is the designer designing for you and your needs, or for his/her portfolio? As far as scratching, upstairs or private baths are normally barefoot or sock areas, so scratching shouldn't be much of an issue. Obviously the matte would perform better than a polished. My only other caution would be to make sure the glass is rated for floor use, for quite a few varieties are not, but you've been in touch with the manufacturer so I'm sure this tile is appropriate. I think you see the answer in front of you, but it's tough at times to deviate from a plan even after you find that the plan may not work. Expectations versus reality. Been there, done that, I feel your pain! Mongo...See MoreCleaning / Maintaining 1"x1" ceramic mosaic on shower floor
Comments (6)We have a brown/tan ceramic mosaic tile on our shower floor -- in the spirit of full disclosure, it's 2" squares, not 1" -- and it's the easiest thing ever. It's easier to keep clean than the old shower pan, though I think it was so old that the "coating" had worn off of it, making it more difficult to keep clean. Our new tile is not fancy or trendy, but it's so easy that I'm going to do it in our new house too....See Morebill_vincent
