I'd say Automatic Updates are set to run at 3:00am daily, and then your computer auto restarts after the updates to install some of them. Check Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic Updates.

Well, before anyone can interact, I am turning up a new Gateway Notebook and among the Gateway "goodies" is "Big Fix", and while working to bring the new notebook up I got a message for a critical XP Home Security update, I took it. Yes, I purchased a new notebook and from old stock so I could avoid having to deal with Vista. That's another story, some of which is on recent posts about an Acer computer and trouble getting it to work with dial-up. I'll give a brief experience "grade" for Vista Basic and Acer soon, hope it has some value when done.

No I don't have a problem right now, just asking for future reference. And, I have no intention of opening up a power supply to take a peek. I know enough about electricity to have a pretty healthy respect. I was talking to him because I was curious about the mini computers they had on display. He didn't seem to think too highly of Acer. I'm glad to see this thread re-upped. I'm reposting my original problem, hoping for a solution: I tried to update to v9 and got the message that said my Update Manager was disabled. Next message said to go to Tools/ Manager; there I'm given two choices. 1. Delete temporary update files 2. Revert virus data base to previous version. No 1 is Are you sure you want to delete temp files?, and No 2 is Warning. Some of the newest threats may not be detected. I've never run into this before when updating. HP WINXP SP2 TIA Sue
