Lets play 'Producer': recast the movies!

Not wanting to hijack the Julie/Julia thread.

Who would you recast in what movies?

'The Aviator' - Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Janeway in Star Trek 'Voyager') instead of Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn. Mulgrew is a dead ringer for Hepburn, looks and mannerisms. Couldn't watch Blanchett.

'The Golden Compass' - Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy in the Potter movies, Colonel Tavington in 'The Patriot') instead of Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel. Isaacs' characters play like they have not one shred of humanity and that is Asriel in the first book! Thank god they put Nicole Kidman in as Mrs. Coulter - didn't save the movie, but the character was meant for her.

We often find ourselves casting real-life events, as in "when they make a movie out of this story..." using actors for people in the news, or people presenting the news.

It's a fun game!

Okay, I'll be completely honest. I honestly have a very difficult time finding any redeeming value to industrial agriculture. Every time I find something, there is always something that more than counteracts it. For instance, I suppose that it is a good thing that layer chickens in a northern Iowa egg factory aren't freezing to death in their climate controlled environment. I would think they hardly find it comfortable, however, as they live in tiny cages each with six other hens so crowded they can't even stretch their legs or extend their wings, cages stacked 8 feet high in rows 800 yards long, over a million birds per house. And live that way for their entire short lives. And I guess the same can be said for the controlled environment of a hog farrowing house. Until I think of the fact that a sow is so tightly penned that she can't turn around, and must live that way for her entire productive life. Oh, wait. There is the low cost of food. Until I think of how artificial that low cost is, as costs to the environment are externalized and left for future generations to clean up, with groundwater adulterated and fisheries destroyed all around the country. Not to mention it is built on crops subsidized with my tax dollars and grown almost entirely on oil, from fertilizer to pesticides to packaging to transport, every chicken or steak or pork chop figuratively coated in oil. And what about those crops themselves? Oil is a finite resource, and emerging economies like China and India are increasingly competing for their share of it. What happens when we have a long term shortage or demand outpaces supply? What happens to that cheap food then? It is a completely unsustainable system. Compare that to organic and sustainable agriculture (and I'm sorry but that is in fact what we are debating here). It has been the claim for a long time that it can't feed the world, when that is absolutely untrue. Fat cats just can't get rich off of it, that's all. Think of all the renewable inputs you use in a natural form of agriculture. Rather than depleting and killing the topsoil the way chemical agriculture does, the soil is nurtured and built upt, and left better than when you started. Small and medium size organic can feed the world, and there are multiple studies that prove it. In the long term, it is the only thing that can.

My dear friend, Cedar and I, get together 1-3 times a week for dinner and chatting,while our DH's play disc golf. We enjoy cooking together and planning our meals. She is moving north about 2 hrs this month, to start her music teaching career. We are trying to get together often before she goes, so this made a great outing on Saturday night. We left hungry and craving beef stew. So yesterday we spent our day food shopping and making an irish beef stew, homemade cheese bread and for dessert chocolate fondue. It was soo much fun. Because we are now inspired to build our cooking skills we are going to take a class or two at the Stonewall Kitchen cooking school. Its only 40 minutes away, and we get to eat the yummy creations!! Yay! The only interruption we had while watching the movie was a man in front of us snoring verrry loudly. At one point the whole theater was giggling...but nobody was upset. The woman he was with seemed to be trying to ignore him...When we later told my husband, he suggested perhaps it was the time she had been left alone in years, LOL.

A little bit of beige may not be bad. Yellow reflects on itself and gets more intense. Whatever you think your final choice is, be sure to paint ALL of your old cabinets with it before you order. I love the fact that it's so hard to pick colors but the world conspires to make it even harder. The Aura fan deck is impossible to use if you want to see two colors next to each other, and you can't hang it vertically on a wall (all colors are darker that way). The paint store will always present you with an "issue" or "problem" that prevents you from getting the samples you need, and they make it too expensive anyway. Chips will either fall of the wall because you used painters tape, or rip off the paint because you didn't. It is making me insane and I would happily hire someone to do this just to avoid the insanity. My neighbors' kids and their friends have been setting off little snapper firecrackers all day. I keep hoping.

Still with furs. I lived for a year in Canada (Ottawa) a cold country and very chilly city and someone gave me their very old fur coat. It was extremely heavy and rather moth eaten, probably less mouton and more dead cat. One day I walked into the city library and, though it was snowing as I left home, it was raining by the time I got there . . . and my goodness did that soggy coat pong. All eyes and noses followed me round the shelves until, in sheer embarrassment, I had to take it off and hide it behind a distant radiator where it steamed-off noxious vapours. When I returned to the UK the coat stayed behind. BTW Queen Elizabeth, was never Princess of Wales, just Duchess of York, as George VI went straight from D of Y to King. When Diana became Princess of Wales it was noted that the title hadn't been used since the time of the marriage of George V in 1890 something to Mary of Teck, always know as Old Queen Mary when I was a child. Also a fact I only became aware of recently, the title of Queen Mother was specially created for Queen Elizabeth on the death of George VI . . . probably much more than you (true US republicans all) needed to know. ;-)

George Clooney is the only current actor, IMO, that could play roles made famous by Cary Grant.

Sometimes when I've just finished a good book I will play the "who would I cast as ________" game in my head.

Gina - I knew we felt the same way about Hugh but I didn't know about Gregory! I noticed you mentioned him first - my real (well first anyway) dream man - I'll fight you for the Audrey Hepburn role!!!!!

Well, I'd like to believe that Pierce Brosnan could play Elery and Catherine Zeta Jones could be me.

More likely, it would be Woodie Allen and Bette Midler....

I thought all about my good friends here, and decided that I like them all better as themselves, and if they made a movie about them based on my screenplay, I would insist they play their own part:

"(Not Very) Desperate Kitchen Mavens"

Jessy as the naughty but cute little neighbor;
Cathy as the sexy Italian organized kitchen maven who has a tool for everything you could possibly need a tool for;
Peppi as the hostess who serves (lots of)wine with all her fabulous home-cooked meals and the one who opens her home to all the wayward neighbors who decide to leave their spouses (even if only for a getaway weekend);
Annie as the sensible, no-nonsense neighbor who keeps all the naughty little "chicks" in line;
Karen as the sweetheart that everybody loves;
David as everyone's best friend (and the guy who brings the booze);
Ann T as the one who ousted Martha and took over as Queen of the Kitchen (and she is telecast in every country of the world. AND she takes all her own photos)
Nancy as the premier dessert baker of the country;
Lindac as the Scotch-swiggin' neighbor who everybody loves, who really is the expert on everything and who tells it like it is and keeps all the nonsense out of eveything (I love you Linda cause you ARE who you are)

I think this would be a great TV series.

I agree, Sherry, it would be a great TV series. Gotta add you, though, the "tough girl" with a heart of gold, with all her friends seeing right through that independent exterior and into her soft heart.

Carp, though, I have to keep the naughty "chicks" in line? It's way more fun to let them get out of line and then be designated driver, LOL.

Someone looking at DD's wedding pictures commented that DH & I looked like Steve Martin and Sally Field. DD said "almost" but more accurately, DH looks like a combination of newscaster, Charlie Gibson & Steve Martin and that I look like Sally Field 10 yrs younger :) and 10 pounds heavier :( Could be worse!

Did you see that Spielberg is going to remake Harvey? I can't imagine anyone besides Tom Hanks as Elwood P. Dowd, can you?
