List Of All Files Etc?

Howdy. Win7. Last year I went from XP to Win7. For one reason or the other I use to look at all of my files, sub files, sub-sub-sub files, etc . Now I can't seem to find it how to get to that very lengthy list. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the list that shows everything on my system? Thanks, Gene

type into the run line, or the browser address bar;

Or Double click the computer icon on your desktop.

You might want to visit Control Panel / Folder Options / View tab, if you want to see hidden and system files.

Thanks Mikie. I have Dell560 Desktop/IE10/ Win7. I can't find what you suggested. Sorry I'm so computer dumb. The only "Computer" is on the left above the "Start" icon on my desktop. Clicking it will tell me how much space is used on "C" and that I have a "D" drive installed. I'm unsure where the run line might be. The only browser address bar I know of is either on the Internet or my email site. I don't have a Folder Options in my Control Panel icons and, therefore, no View Tab. Back on XP Windows Explorer would give me everything. Now it's just icons saying Libraries, Documents, Etc. Thanks, Gene

Thanks to both of you. Mikie, I should have thought of that! And Damccoy, I am glad to have my attention drawn to Default Programs. I had never even noticed it was there. And wouldn't you know, on booting up this morning and going to My Pictures to try out Mikie's suggestion, I found that ALL the pictures had reverted to jpeg, but I had to go through the Open with>Choose program (in spite of the program I wanted already being in the list), and then MGI Photosuite and clicking the box for always opening this type of file with this program. And that did the trick. I have no idea why my picture files revolted yesterday, nor why rebooting fixed them. (Should have tried that first, I can see now.) My virus problem has been fixed, but in the process, a few things seem to have gotten changed. I wonder what new puzzles await me!

After you have been surfing the web for awhile, a lot of temporary files gets stored on disk. Some of these are used to quickly display the contents of re-occuring frames on a page. You can clean up your hard drives with a built-in utiltiy in Windows. Double-click "My Computer" (or single click depending on your settings). My Computer> right click on a hard drive> properties> Disk Cleanup. The system will compute the amount of space used by temporary files and display the results. Highlight (click on the selection box) the files you'd like to remove, then click "ok" or "apply" whichever is applicable. The two biggest space hogs are: Temporary Internet Files Temporary Files These can be safely removed, however, there may be minor information 'remembered' in these files. The next time an old site is re-visited, it may take a little more time to load the page because it is starting with a clean slate. As you brouse, new files get written to the temporary space on your disk. Another file that can grow to large size is the browsing "history" file. This is the file where the URLs( addresses of sites visited) are kept. There are user settings to control the size of this file. To access in Win XP: Control Panel > Internet Options > General Tab > On the general tab, find "Browsing History" and click on "settings". Near the bottom of the "settings" panel, find "no. of days" to keep history. A common setting is 20 days. Set this to whatever you like. Addresses (URLs) older than the setting will be dropped off the list. These are the addresses that appear in the drop-down list when you click on the down caret next to the address box at the top of your browser.

Do you keep a list of all the books you own?

I had far more books in the past than now. I'm down to about 200 of them, and I sometimes wonder why I keep them--dogeared as many of them are. Pages are crumbling and falling out of some. Some pages are missing in some as well. I keep them around because they're comforting. I glance into them at times. Many have my marginal notes from student days. Who would want such overused books with my scribblings in them? So there they are, the chief dust-catchers around here, while I let the dust gather and do 99% of my reading by listening to audiobooks and have been doing that since 1983. I've listed my books on LibraryThing (the books I own) but haven't updated that in a while. Also there are my translations (half a shelf) as well as books by friends and relatives. My translations, though published, are not runaway best-sellers because they're on topics that are fairly specialized (successive approximation in math, problem-solving in schoolchildren, the child's concept of number). Not real page-turners.

Back again, and thanks. I double clicked on Computer and then clicked on the bar showing how much space I had on C. Wow! A panel came up showing what was on my computer with the ability to continue a step down process and moved to more detailed files.

I'm still looking for a page I copied off the Net using Faststone Capture (that started my questions). I didn't give it a file name but gave it a title. Anyway, now I can start digging a little deeper.

By the way, I use to search IE by using a date if all else failed. Now it seems unless one has a file name, or part of it, they're out of luck. Any thoughts. Thanks again. Gene

You can also get to Windows Explorer by right clicking the start button then click Explore.

To sort by date is easy. Look at this site and you'll see the first image. If yours looks like that simply click on the 'Date modified' header, click again if you prefer reverse order.

If you view shows icons instead click the small icon to the right of 'New folder' and in the drop down menu click to show details - or which ever you prefer, play a little to see the options there.
