If you dig in you'll find it is recommended to either:

Enter your present free ZA Program Control and change it to Medium from High.

Uninstall your present free ZA then install the latest ZA then install the KB951748

Well I had ZA version 7.0.370 and installed the "new fix" version 7.0.483 and went in the

program Control to configure it to High. NOOPE!!!!!!!! Can't do it!!! It's now set to

Medium by default and is High no longer an option. Have to get ZA Pro for high.

THAT'S the ZA fix.

How teddibly teddibly clebah.

So which do you want? Program Control High or KB951748?

Same here. Won't go past medium and I haven't installed the MS update yet.

Hi jean001, If your machine is still slow, when you get time post a Hijackthis log and I will look at it for you. It could prove to be very beneficial here are instructions, Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe Download the one on the left Version 2.0.3 (Beta) Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop. Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post. DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

I would not do the one through windows update and go online with out the protection especially since you said you had a problem with it when doing it that way before. The stand alone file you simply select to download it to your pc, to like your desktop or where ever you choose, then once you have the internet connection disabled and have your security programs off then go to where you downloaded that file to and double click it to begin the install of it. Yes you can remove IE8 through add remove before you do sp3 and it will go back to IE6, then as soon as you are back online (with your security programs back on) from the install of sp3 go immediately to your windows updates site and get any other updates and you should be offered IE8. the guidelines link Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) Installation Guidelines where to download the stand alone sp3 file from, click the download button and save to your pc, ignore any info there saying it is for IT professionals and not for single pc, this is the only download and is the one everyone uses when not doing it through windows updates. Windows XP Service Pack 3 as to foxit reader, it is a much better choice than Adobe but you do have to make sure it is always updated to the latest version because it also has been targeted by the bad guys. Opening pdf files online has always been a bad habit that is not something new but now more are hitting it with some bad exploits. So whether or not you choose to continue opening them online would be up to you. Since you have foxit now have you removed the Adobe Pdf reader? if not you do still need to keep it updated because having any program on the pc that has not been updated can be a security risk.

when you get the updated version for zone alarm you no longer have to keep it at medium you go back to high, moving the slider to medium was/ is only for those that have not updated their zone alarm to the latest updated fixed version. I use an old version of zone alarm pro the old versions were not affected. You will see on the page I linked to from zone alarm in the center it says recommended actions: Recommended Actions - Download and install the latest versions which solve the loss of internet access problem here (English only): then there are the links to the new versions of zone alarm you select the one that you have be it za free basic firewall or za suite. The other options listed below that are only for if you did not do this step. This is the version number you want to have it is the latest updated one. 7.0.483.000 ONLY get these from the zone alarm site to make sure you are getting the fixed version or by going into your zone alarm program and hitting the update button it will get the update for you.

This is a post from dslr from a user that had his show no high option also and what his experience was
"I continued playing with this and wanted to update folks based on this. I downloaded revo uninstaller to help me remove ZA. As I was playing with ZA, I noticed that I now had high security set in ZA! What?!! Where before it would not let me change the setting from medium to high (it displayed a message saying this was only available in ZA Pro) now it was automatically set to High! I looked at the version info to be sure ZA did not somehow give me a PRO version. Still shows free version, but now I can set it to HIGH security. I don't know what changed, except perhaps the "registration" took place between these two settings. I agreed to register this free version, and all I can think of is sometime after I installed/rebooted/ran it, the registration completed and ZA now allows me to set the security to high. This is really odd behavior. Right now i am running ver. 7.0.483.00 and it is now letting me run stealth mode (I think!). I am going to do some tests to see that stealth mode is actually enabled. Will post an update if I find that is not the case. Sorry if I caused a ruckus, but I have never seen any FW do something like this. Has anyone else see this particular issue?"

I'm using the free version of ZA. When I applied the MS fix, I lost internet connectivity until I set ZA to medium. When I downloaded th enew version of ZA and installed it (telling it to keep my current settings), I then went in and set it to high.

The example you show is for Firewall. I am referring to Program Control.

My Firewall is also set to High as the example.

As far as I recall, these are the settings I have always had in ZA. Firewall High for Internet, Medium for Trusted Zones, and Medium for Program Control. So I don't think ZA has changed anything as far as the controls with the new version.

Thank you as usual Raven. Rebooted and it's showing High. Installed the dreaded MS update and all seems well - so far.
Thanks for that post from the other user. I wasn't prompted to reboot nor would I have until tonight.

Problem I have is my ZA settings were erased. Therefore, I am holding off on my other computers. I don't have the time to spend with this at work this week.
