Misbehaving programs--freezes & crashes

My computer is acting increasingly badly, and I don't know if it's the operating system or the software or both.

I posted earlier about losing all my emails out of Outlook Express. The program freezes if I click on a hyperlink embedded in an email. This somehow freezes the whole computer, and I can't restart or shut down without crashing it. I noticed the last time this happened (yesterday) that I had to hold the button in much longer than usual before it had an effect. Outlook Express also freezes as soon as it's opened sometimes, with the same results.

Microsoft word has a problem, too, only it's usually limited to the program and doesn't affect the whole computer. It will sometimes quit abruptly (with error message) when I save (Ctrl + S), and often does the same thing if I try to close a document.

Does it sound like these problems orginate with Microsoft Office? If so, should I reinstall it? Or is there something else I can try?

I would suspect your computer is infected.

What anti virus do you use, it is up to date and when did you last scan?

What anti spyware programs do you have installed, are they up to date and when did you last scan?

What firewall are you using?

When did you last compact you Outlook Express?
Open Outlook Express click File at the top, click Folders/Compact all folders.

When did you last do a disk cleanup?
Click Start/All programs/ Accessories/System tools/Disk cleanup. Note, do the disk cleanup before the defrag so it works on a clean drive.

When did you last defrag the hard drive?
Click Start/All programs/ Accessories/System tools/Disk defragmenter.

When did you last do a free online scan?
Try BitDefender or Housecall or any other free service you prefer

Hmm, forgot to ask how old the computer is and if you have ever had the side off to clean out the dust bunnies, especially around the fans, that accumulate causing heat to build up. This could also be a major issue.

Shut down and remove the power cable before doing this though.

Glad the ignore thing is working! The worse thing you can do when a little dog gets snarly is pick him up... since it makes him feel "big" and his behavior amplifies. We have a neighbor that did this every time we walked our two large, friendly dogs past her house and I politely asked her to stop it once. I promised her that if she let the dogs meet, no one would get hurt, and it would be instructive. Well, her little pup charged my girls and started yapping meanly. Izzy gave me a puzzled look, approached the little dog, sniffed it and gently put her paw on it. The dog froze for a couple seconds, and when it got up again it was sweet and demure. Jaz play-bowed at it, which scared the dog, but I reassured the woman that this was good. We took them to the park on our street and let them romp a little. Technically, my dogs romped and hers followed at a polite distance and wagged its tail, but they all had as much fun as they could, and the dog acknowledged us in a friendly way when we passed it after that. I always giggled that the dog just needed to know that a) it was small and b) my dogs were OK with that and liked her anyway. Oh, about the dog park... may I please suggest that a dog park is a great place for a dog with manners to go... and not such a great place for a dog without manners to get a crash course? If your little chi oversteps his boundaries with the wrong dog... he could get seriously hurt or worse... or, even though he's little, I've seen a lot of owners of little dogs end up paying the vet bills of the bigger dogs they bit. For an intro to doggie socialization, you're better off having friends with well-socialized dogs meet yours in a controlled environment... and every puppy class includes a bit of meet & greet for this very reason. Once your dog has learned this skill in a safe and controlled environment, then a dog park is a great idea.

CPU usage is at 8-10 percent. I looked at Norton briefly and didn't see any activity going on...how do I go in and exclude a program from it? it is Norton Systemworks basic edition, just renewed (online subscription). I'm on Windows XP. WME has been "encoding the first pass" since last night. I'm assuming I did everything right, since there were no instructions for newbies of WME. I selected my MPG file, selected WMV as the output type, DVD quality for video, and CD quality for audio. The choices did say "VBR" or "CBR" which I didn't know the difference of...so I chose CBR.

I read through the OP & some of the posts, but stopped at this one & had to respond before I continue on with reading the rest of the posts. (so forgive me if I missed something that was posted after this) "Why can't you respect someone who works 2 jobs (see your first post)? What is not to respect about that? Did anyone notice this comment????" I noticed it. My first thought was "at least she's working". I've also had similar difficulty with my own feelings/judgments, etc regarding my SD12's BM. She is 38 and has never worked a real job. She was lucky enough to get a minimum wage office job, instead of fast food... but a real job that gave her some good responsibility, but she screwed that up by stealing from her boss & ended up being convicted of embezzelment. Now, at 38+, how is she ever going to work & support herself? I stuggle with judging her for that because I have worked since I was 14 and often worked 2 jobs to support my kids... she sits on her backside all day, thinking of ways to get others to take care of her. Our values & lifestyles are such a stark contrast to each other, I cannot relate to her at all. It's much easier to judge & criticize her than to try & understand something I can't begin to comprehend. Just as I can't understand her relationship (or lack thereof) with her kids... I loved kids, I wanted kids & when I had my kids, I live for them... there's nothing I wouldn't do for them. I can't count the sleepless nights, how many miles I've driven to do things for them, everything I've gone without so they can have. So, I don't get someone that lets her child run around in the cold with shorts & no shoes. I don't get someone that relies on others to be taken care of when I know eventually, those people will be gone. and what bothers me most, which really ISN'T my problem, is that she is modeling her "everyone should take care of me" lifestyle to her daughter... and if falls back on me & DH. I wonder what it will be like when SD is 25 & has kids... can't keep a relationship together (like her mom) and comes back to us for help. She won't go to her mom because her mom is already nearly 40 and can't even get a minimum wage job because she's a convicted thief. I guess in a way, my opinion or judgment of BM could be seen that I think I'm better than her... and there is some truth to it. I am proud that I supported my kids, raised my kids, and would do anything for my kids. If I were a BM that wouldn't work, fought supporting my kids, let someone else raise my kids & made excuses every time my kids needed something or wanted me to come to one of their things... then I would feel like a loser. But, that comes from MY perspective from the parent that I am. I can't understand what someone else feels when they do things so differently. There is no shame in manual labor at any age. There is no shame in an honest day's work at any age. I can only imagine that someone "at her age" chooses to be a waitress because she may enjoy the interaction with customers... she may be a bus driver because she enjoys being around kids & likes the schedule. It's not always about the money or prestige. My aunt started a landscaping company at age 55 when she divorced her husband. It's something I would never do but she enjoys it. I gave up a secure office job with benefits to have the freedom of self employment but sometimes, when the phones don't ring for days & the bank account starts dwindling... and I don't have my bi weekly paycheck to count on, it's scary but I love what I do so it's worth it to me. I try to understand SD's BM... not working, etc. I imagine she enjoys each day, sleeping in & playing games on her computer all day without a worry in the world. I couldn't do it, but I am getting better at seeing another perspective.

You're pretty much in the out of luck department, with some wiggle room... Merillat has a "design tool" they unveiled this year, but I don't know as it was much better than anything else out there. There might be some sort of opensource CAD program you can grab, but I hunt through sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net regularly looking for said program; haven't found one yet. I use Linux, so I'd love to find an app I can run on that platform; all of the commercial ones run on Mac or that other monstrosity out of Redmond. If I ever do find one, I intend on screaming it from the rooftops, so you guys will hear about it.

Owbist, thanks so much for taking the time to give me those good suggestions. The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000. I'm guessing I bought it three years ago. We opened it up in January to install something, and I assume it was treated to some canned air at that time.

I'm using Avast as my anti-virus. It seems to scan fairly often on its own. My spyware program is AdAware, and I run it about once a week or so. It always finds something. My son and son-in-law blame Weather Bug for this. They urge me to get it off my system.

I don't know about a firewall.

I compacted the contents of Outlook Express after reading your post, but there wasn't much to compact since I had lost everything a week or so earlier.

I hadn't done a Disk Cleanup or Defrag in I don't know how long. I did both after reading your post.

I tried both BitDefender and Housecall, but neither was able to run the scan. I followed their troubleshooting suggestions and lowered the security settings, but no luck.

I haven't experienced a freeze since doing these things, so I suppose I should feel hopeful. However, I just tried to install Photoshop Elements and wasn't able to. No freeze, no crash, but the installation window just quietly disappeared. I then tried to open up the How to Install file on the disk, but was told it couldn't open Word for Windows 6.0 files. I'm pretty sure that's the version of Word that I have.

Meanwhile (are you still reading?), I did all of the above with my upstairs computer, which has been running painfully slow and frequently has trouble booting up. I had to let the Disk Cleanup run overnight. I was hoping for a miracle, I guess, but I didn't get it.

That computer is a five-year-old Dimention 4550. Using it goes like this. Click Start. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Window appears. Click All Programs. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Window appears. Roll mouse over Accessories. Nothing happens. Click Accessories. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Menu appears. You get the idea. It is wildly frustrating! The machine is low on memory (256), and I bought more. I'm waiting for my son to install it. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. :-)

Hi Susan, do not worry about anyone reading the whole post. Yours is an excellent response giving clear concise steps you have taken. Wish more would offer such info when looking for help as it does make finding cures so much easier.

So you or the person installing ÂsomethingÂ in January would have noticed if there was a large accumulation of dust and crud? Good enough, if in doubt whip the left side off and have a quick squint.

Avast is great, your latest definitions update is July 24th, version 000759-1 so check that this is installed.

Weatherbug does not come across as a knight in shining armour sadly. They have been accused of piggybacking ÂMy Search ToolbarÂ and ÂGatorÂ, 2 nasties we do not like at all. Although they seem to have improved their image Read this article for guidance. Sadly like so many would be helpful sites they failed to date the message so we have no idea how old it might be. PC Hell has a fix for removal but that is from December 2004.

To find which firewall you have click Start/Control panel/Security Centre then click the 2 small down arrows beside the green button to the right of the Firewall sign and the drop down menu will tell you which you are using. If as I suspect it is Windows firewall you might consider swapping to a different, free firewall. Windows only has a one way (inbound) protection but does nothing to stop already installed phone home spies from sending out details of your surfing habits or worse.

BitDefender and Housecall will not run from Firefox, you must use Internet Explorer. Or was it halted by something else?

Hmm, I wonder how much free space you have on the hard drive. Click Start and My computer, now you should see your hard drive. It will tell you how much ÂstuffÂ you have on it and how much free space. For optimum operation there should be a minimum of 25% free space to allow the volatile swap file to operate at itÂs best.

As you had not done a disk clean up for a while I would suggest you install and run Crap Cleaner at itÂs default setting. This will more thoroughly clean your drive than the original clean up you did.

Instead of using Weather Bug, you might want to use Weather Watcher. Weather Watcher does not have adds on it and you can configure it to your city. It displays the temp down on the tool bar and can be found at this website: http://www.singerscreations.com/ The current version is the 5.6.23 issue. I have used Weather Watcher for over 4 years now. I am not connected to it in any way other than a satisfied user of it.
