Drive RPM's

I am planning on buying a 3.0 USB external portable hard drive and was wondering if a 7200rpm outweighs the 5400 when buying?

Am wanting the 500GB which is 5400rpm opposed to the 7200rpm 1TB.

Those are both USB3.0 . . cool.
Those are both the same 5400 rpm.

7200 rpm certainly faster, depends on how large your save or write files are..... especially if combined with your usb3.0 Port ? 7200 rpm is nice.

Thanks so much for the reply. I noticed the last time I went out to mess with it that there is a spring in the front which is not disconnected, but is stretched beyond what it seems like it should be. It seems that it is too loose. Now I just have to figure out if I can find a suitable replacement or if I have to take it to the shop for this. Thinking back I have noticed sometimes that when I was mowing under the pine tree branches that it would sound like it was going to cut out for a second but I thought I possibly blocked something with the branches. Now I know what that was. Thanks again.

Wally: I appreciate your explanation of the 746 watts equalling 1 hp. I checked all 6 of my physics text books and found nothing addressing this. Only 550ft lbs/sec equaling 1 hp. Although I was well aware that 746 watts was considered 1 hp in generating. Now that I think about, I have seen some English of German engines expressed in KW output. I too am a EE, however, I had almost no education in power generating or distribution. My speciality and education was in micro electronics, thus I am quiet familiar with Ohm's Law. Now an interesting question: How did James Watts make his early steam engine run when he had almost no steam pressure at the time, too little to push the piston down. This was because he had no pressure vessel that would hold steam pressure of any appreciable magnitude. I ran across the answer to this in the Henry Ford museum.

To calculate mower blade tip speed: tip speed[ft/min] = Blade Length[in] x pi x rpm x 1/12[ft/in] ~ or ~ tip speed[fpm] = blade length(in) * 0.2618 * rpm rpm = fpm/(blade length[in] * 0.2618) To achieve a tip speed of 19000 fpm for a 21" blade: 19000/21 * 0.2618 = 3455.93 rpm A 21" blade at an rpm of 3100 gives you a tip speed of 17043.18 fpm To calculate the engine speed needed to achieve a certain blade speed, it is necessary calculate the pulley ratios between the engine drive pulley and the blade driven pulley. Size of Driven or Driving Pulley = Diameter of pulley multiplied by its RPM divided by RPM required single belt system: The ratio equals driving pulley speed/driven pulley speed = driving pulley size/driven pulley size If the engine speed is 3100 rpm and you need to achieve 3455 rpm for a 21" blade, the ratio is 0.897. This means if your engine pulley is 4 inches, the blade pulley needs to be 4.45 inches. To find the ratio for decks with multiple drive belts: Divide product of driving pulley diameters by product of driven pulley diameters and multiply quotient by RPM of first driving pulley, this equals speed of last driven pulley. speed of blade pulley = (engine drive pulley * deck drive pulley/deck driven pulley * blade pulley) * engine rpm Keep in mind that measuring the pulley diameter is only an approximation. What really needs to be measured is the "pitch diameter" which is where the outer edge of the belt rides in the pulley.

The Toshiba A135 received a Very Good rating from cnet. Cnet doesn't give very many $1000 affordable laptops that high of a rating. I recently bought the A135 2877, I believe is the model, the one with 2 gs of mem. (would recommend 2 gigs minimum for vista, from what I hear. It has a 180g hard drive, actually two seperate hard drives, a 100g plus an 80g. Great for backing up your system. With this much memory and hd space, you could collect a sizeable video and audio library (were talking hundreds of songs and movies). It runs Vista flawlessly. Yes, there are faster systems out there. I would have loved one with the Nvidia graphics card, which would give you a whopping 512m of shared graphics memory. The Intel that comes with the A135 has 256megs, acceptable. For about $1100 at costco online, I thinks it's one of the best deals out there. It was about $300 more than I wanted to spend on a laptop, but I'm just thinking where technology is going today, with streaming video, tv and music becomming more and more prevailant, before too long, anything less that 2 gigs of memory and a harddrive less than 100 gigs will probably be obsolete in the next couple years. I think this will be sufficient for our needs for some years to come. -- john

Those are both the same 5400 rpm.

Sorry mikie, my bad. I was looking at so many drives I must have had 7200rpm stuck in my mind for a different one that was 1TB.

I've read that 7200 does not show much performance increase on laptop-sized hard drives (2.5 inches) but is measurably faster with desktop-sized hard drives. 7200 will generate more heat than 5400. Anyone know more about this?

7200 rpm is a major noticable difference in laptops & desktops too as the main drive in my personal experience.

I have a similar portable external hard drive (Toshiba) that I use for my laptop backups. It is 5400 rpm as is the main internal drive in the laptop. When I was looking to buy, I do not recall seeing any of the 2.5" external drives that were 7200 rpm.

Now, on the other hand, my desktop internal drive is a SATA 7200 rpm drive, so I chose a 7200 rpm 3.5", 1TB external drive for backing up that computer. It also is a USB 3.0 drive, so when I get a new computer with USB3 ports, it will be much faster.

It's really a matter of personal choice. The Toshiba is so quiet I hardly know it's running except for the blinking light, and it also does not get hot. So for a portable drive, I think it's just great. Mine is 500GB.

Speed is the sum of many of the computer parts. Hard drive, video card, memory, processor, USB 1.5 - 2 or 3 all have a say in the performance. And not forgetting the person banging away on the keyboard.

My laptop is 7200rpm as is my desktop.
I want an external USB portable hard drive to backup all my files/folders to, that I have on my laptop.
I do have a Verbatim portable external 5400rpm drive for my desktop backup which I like real well but want a separate drive for my laptop and being it has the 3.0 port, am searching to buy 3.0.
Came across the Toshiba and think I will order the 500GB.
Will be quite interesting to see if there is a difference between using 3.0 vs 2.0 as is my desktop.
I have the same folder on my desktop that I have on my laptop so file size is the same to experiment with.
