Windows XP not always booting

We had a lightning storm back in March, and our computer did not have a phone line protector (yes, we're on dial-up) as part of our surge protector (we do now!).

We were no longer able to access the internet. I was able to figure out the modem was damaged, so I swapped it with an old one and everything was fine again.

Then last Friday, my wife received a kernel error when turning on the PC (not sure exactly how the message read). Everything worked fine over the weekend. However, Windows XP wouldn't boot yesterday morning. She tried again a couple more times and then it booted fine.

Do you think this recent trouble is due to the lightning strike four months ago? The PC is only 2.5 years old. Could it be some slight damage to the motherboard or hard drive? How does one know if they are no longer functioning properly and whether it's the MOBO, hard drive, or....

Thanks in advance!

Ryan
