anyone regret buying a counter-depth refrigerator?
Comments (9)My old Maytag fridge stuck out 11" from the countertop. That thing dominated our tiny kitchen. Replacing that monster with a counter-depth completely changed the look and feel of the entire kitchen. Just a few inches, but it makes a huge difference. Our new fridge is a KitchenAid Architect 36" counter depth side-by-side with 24.5 cubic feet of storage. I love it. It's so much quieter and holds a steady temperature. I really don't notice any difference in the amount of storage space from the monster Maytag. The shelves are just a touch shallower, but I really don't mind--it was just old moldy things that got pushed back there anyway. This fridge is definitely taller, so that is probably where the extra space comes from. If you are petite you may have trouble reaching the back of the top shelf. Comments (22)I just bought and installed the KitchenAid counter depth french door fridge. Not the supersized one. I chose it for a couple of reasons bur primarily because it was one of the few I could get without a water dispenser in the front door (though there is a discreet one inside the fridge). I hated the fact that the counter depth added about a $1000 to the price tag and worried that I would not feel the aesthetic advantage justified that price difference once I got it since I was trying to be very frugal in my purchases. I was so wrong. I am crazy about this fridge. The bottom freezer holds everything my old full depth freezer did except I can see it all so easy in the lighted space with 3 slide out layers. I can see everything I have when I open the french doors. Nothing hard to get at. Nothing out of sight. The door shelves hold tons of stuff too. I like that the sides are gray....not black...so if some of the side had to show it would blend fairly well with the stainless. Mine will not show as there will be a full panel of cabinet wood covering both sides (cabinets arrive in 2 wks). I'm having an open shelf/cubby above it to hold cookbooks. Buy this unit with confidence....See Moreanyone regret buying a counter-depth refrigerator?
Comments (22)I have had a fridge in my unheated garage for about 6 years. I really needed the extra fridge space like others have mentioned. I live in western Washington where it gets fairly cold in winter and fairly hot in summer, but neither for extremely long periods of time. Here's what happens with mine. The temperature sensor is in the fridge apparently. In the winter, the garage can get cold enough that the fridge part of the unit doesn't need to run to maintain the correct temp. Therefore, the unit doesn't turn on the cold air. The freezer, however, needs the cold air to keep completely frozen. Sometimes certain things in the freezer get a little thawed out and then refreeze. I get some freezer burn occassionally. But the fridge part of the unit is completely fine. I don't have any issues with it during the summer, but I'm sure that thing must run hard to keep everything cool. This is a small trade-off for me as I absolutely need the extra fridge space. Oh, and as to the counter-depth issue. Have you checked the actual cubic foot size difference in the fridge spaces? Some counter-depths have almost as much as some of the standard depths. Comments (9)Thanks for your reply. We are in Canada, Ontario, and our prices are significantly higher than the US prices. There is very little difference between Benchmark and 800 series range - Benchmark has 20,000 BTU middle burner vs 18,000 BTU for 800 series. Benchmark has one telescopic rack - 800 series does not have it. Price difference is about $300. Best deal I found for Bosch fridge in Canada is $3300 (this is with Bosch rebate going on) and I can get ELUX for $2200 + 3 year part warranty from Electrolux thrown in. I would prefer Bosch even though it's smaller than Electrolux, but the price difference is huge, Bosch is almost $1000 more. Another dilemma is how interchangeable these fridges are. The cabinets will be custom made, and the fridge will be in the wall of cabinets. Bosch / JA are 72" high, and Elux is about 70" high. I already accepted the idea that these fridges will not last more than 7-8 years, and then I will need a new fridge to place in the same opening. Would you buy extended warranty with any of those appliances? Is it worth it? Thanks...See MoreLE
