SpywareBot -- did I goof?

Have been updating my new computer -- HP Pavillion 8100 with Vista.

All was well after I installed both Zone Alarm and AVG.

But, after SpywareBot was installed, I wanted to set a Restore Point, but accidental clicked Restore System. The process reported an error -- it was unable to complete the Restore. (As it turns out, Vista automatically sets a Restore Point after you add or remove a program.)

After a google search about SpywareBot, I suspect I messed up. If so, I need help.

A response to someone else's question at majorgeeks suggested to first disable Windows Defender, then to uninstall SpywareBot from Add/Remove Programs, and finish by running ATF.

I want to check with you folks as to what I need to do next. Please advise.

I Googled Spywarebot and found a mix of information. Seems more of a nuisance program than any kind of threat.

I think I would remove the program via the Add/Remove feature then run Crap Cleaner followed by a free online scan to for my own feeling of satisfaction.

I tried several times to uninstall but the program would pop up a box with an "installing" message. In other words, it would interrupt the uninstall.

Will try again and, if successful, use crapcleaner.

If the above doesn't work, would it be easier/cleaner to use the Recovery Partition that came with the puter?

Bboy, it is my understanding that the harm from amending backfill comes from the restricted lateral movement of roots through the amended soil/unamended soil interface, which causes lateral roots to encircle the trunk of the tree. Downward moving roots don't encircle trunks. If the bottom of the root ball sits at grade when planted, over unamended soil, whether the backfill in the mound the tree is planted in is amended or not, there is no lateral movement of the roots possible, and thus, no possibility of encircling roots. The roots can only go straight down with this planting method, into the unamended soil underneath, and THEN laterally into the unamended, surrounding soil. The roots never have to penetrate through an inhibiting, lateral interface. The roots in the amended mound have no place to go but down in order to find water. The mound gets dry fairly quickly compared to the surroundingsoil. So the roots are trying to escape the mound, they can only go down, and by the time the roots start spreading laterally, they are no longer surrounding the trunk, they are well under the tree and out of harm's way. I believe this is a way to establish roots quicker, and not violate the amended hole paradigm, with no possibility of harm now or later. I base that on logic, experimentation, and having observed how much better trees seem to grow in clay when they are planted very high.. My theory is that the roots are forced to exit the immediate planting area surrounding the trunk faster when planted in a mound, and in addition, the tree can be watered much more heavily, without risk of drowning, Maybe I should have saved this for a more theoretical thread and not in response to a newcomer's question. I was until last year pruning mine like a regular shrub. Then last Spring I decided to prune down to around 2 foot and I could tell the difference immediately that year in the quality of flowers. Plus the vigor of the new growth. I can not say enough how much better the quality of flowers I received last year after pruning down to 2 feet. I was just to scared to prune down to a foot or less last year. This year after seeing the difference of last I had the courage to prune down some to a foot or a little less and they are the same size as the ones that I cut down to only two feet again. So so far I am thinking if you cut down to a either 1 or 2 feet, seems like you will get a similiar result with a mature one. Pruning to the ground seems a little extreme, but wouldn't be surprised if it even works better. Because the really did respond well to the harder pruning. These types of hydrangeas (Paniculata) play with completely different rules than others! Very easy to grow and reliable. You can prune smooth hydrangeas like the Annabelle in the same manner, because they both flower on new wood. Although Oakleafs and Traditional Hydrangeas most people think of like Nikkos (Macrophylla) bloom on old wood and should not be pruned in this manner. Although now they have came out with recently Macrophylla Hydrangeas that bloom on new and old wood, like the Endless Summer series of Hydrangeas. Hope I was helpful and did not ramble on too long. Pics would help but every Oakleaf I've seen in a pot have these rusty brown spots all over them by mid growing season. The ones I've had in the ground for a year don't have that. The Alice and Pee Wee I planted this season look like crap but will bounce back next year.

No manure in a container planting mix :-) It (and regular compost) compact/collapse too easily, impacting good drainage, which is critical in a container situation and crucial to the healthy growth of JM's. Chicken manure also tends towards alkalinity (and with a rather high salt content), so not a product/amendment favored by Japanese maples. Local nurseries often carry acid planting mixes with a high percentage of a barky component. These make very good potting soils for containerized maples (as well as any conifers or most broadleaved evergreens). Or you want a very textural, gritty mix with a high concentration of bark, as well as drainage enhancers like perlite, pumice or Turface. And with container plantings, it is much better to rely on supplemental fertilization periodically during the growing season rather than rely on the nutrients offered by any organic matter, like the chicken manure. There are just insufficient levels of microbial life in a container growing setting to be able to rely on organic matter or organic ferts to supply needed nutrients. Plus the fact that manures and composts are just not advised for container soil mixes. Personally, I'd repot ASAP in a better suited soil mix.

Actually if you are not too far into setting this computer up then certainly return it to the factory settings and start modifying to your liking from scratch. I would have suggested that from the outset but was not sure if you wanted to go that route or where inclined to try.

You could try going into Windows Explorer, drill down to C:\Program files\ the look for and remove the program folder there followed by Ccleaner. But I still like the idea of returning it to squeaky clean and having a fresh start.

Okay.

Think I'll look into that because when I tried to uninstall SpywareBot, Windows said I have to log on as administrator -- but that's me, a single user for the machine. I made several attempts with the same result each time.

Frustration coming out of my ears.

Used Recovery Partition and followed the directions given on line at HP.

Have been successful in installing two printers: HP4 (Vista supports it) and HP1017, the latter by obtaining an updated driver from HP online.

But now I have a major problem. The D-Link wireless connection from the other computer doesn't work, this in spite of plugging/unplugging into USB, restarting computer, and downloading & installing (I thought) an updated driver.(It's a good thing we have a 2nd computer as a work-around.)

What next? Do I phone HP and hope I get someone who speaks English? Or did I miss something?

I have no experience with wireless connections. However I did have a very positive experience when I used the computer for a 'live' chat with the HP help line regarding a new printer. Yes, she spoke with an accent but we had no trouble understanding each other even though I too have a strange accent. She walked me through various scenarios with patience till we resolved the issue.

Perhaps someone else will come to the rescue in the mean time.

Well, as it turns out, I kept slogging away until I was successful. The wireless works now, but it was a long, painful process. Did a new install of the sending unit, via an online file at Dlink. But I still had to fiddle a lot to get the other end working.

Please cross your fingers for me, perhaps toes also.

Solved my problem with SpywareBot by running the Recovery Manager which was installed on a partition. I'm still struggling with the connection for the wireless d-link from the Dell Dimension 8200 (sender unit is here; runs XP) to the new HP 8100 (receiver unit; runs Vista Home Premium).

So, I'll end this thread and possibly begin another if the several options I have don't work.
