Synching Devices - Pro and Con

I just got a touchscreen laptop and am enjoying it. For a little over a year I've also been using android devices, and have been enjoying them too. Windows and Android allow devices to be synched (sp?). What are the pros and cons?
My main concerns:
1) I had an android tablet stolen in January. Except for the actual theft, I haven't had a problem because I quickly changed all my passwords. I bought a new tablet identical to the stolen one. One day It wouldn't accept my password. Later I learned this might have been because the stolen one had been synched to the new one. Google won't remove the stolen device from my account. And now the new tablet, fortunately an inexpensive one, sits unused because of my security concern.
2) When you synch a Win8 or Android device how do you know what devices it is synching with? Is there a way to specify?

Maybe I'm ignorant, but to hear you ask "Should I sync?" makes no more sense to me than asking "Should it be cleaned tomorrow?" when you haven't specified what "it" is. I don't follow what you have in mind.

What information are you or were you syncing between these devices? What software or capability were you using?

Google says "Sync your Google services to your phone, tablet, and desktop programs so that you can always access what's important to you."
I would assume that it is easier for Google to gather all of the information about you it if your devices are connected.

What kind of wildfire danger do you have in your area. If none then either or would work. But if you do the more enclosed style the better so embers/sparks don't cause you a problem. I have the open barrel type and like it but my one area of concern is that I do live in a fire prone area and we have to stay with our fires(When they are allowed even) until it's out cold. With a metal or pottery type you can not use water to extinguish. It will crack or warp it. I want to build an in ground fire pit so I can extinguish it when I want to. So my advice is if you live in a wildfire prone area contact your local fire protection agency and get their opinion, they often times have requirements you have to meet in the first place.

I have a boiler system in my 1960 2 bedroom ranch. I love the way it warms the house, but my only problems/complaints are: 1.) When the heat starts up you can hear the copper fins "clicking" as the expand. This is because the previous owners have them all banged up and at some point I'll have to straighten them all up. 2.) You'll need a humidifier. My house gets extremely dry during winter months and we had to buy several small units and put them in the bedrooms. I wish i had a whole house unit to add humidity, but there is no way to do this using a hyrdonic system.

So I know diagrams that show something like an overhang blocking all the sun's light are useful and help a lot of people. However, they aren't really correct and that might be confusing to some. We can easily calculate the size the overhang needs to be for any set of windows to completely shade them at any time by measuring from the bottom of the eave to the bottom of the window and using the sun's zenith (or cos of zenith which is easier to find). So in Indianapolis the Zenith is 20° south on the summer solstice. Assume a one story house with window bottoms 80" from the bottom of the eave and you will need an eave that is 29" deep to completely block the sun. That all sounds fine and good but the sun is only at the summer solstice one time a year. At the Vernal and Autumnal equinox the zenith is almost 41° south in Indianapolis. So the same house will need eaves 68" to catch all the heating times. Realistically you would need eaves capable of full shade at the summer cross quarter days, which means eaves of 48". Large but doable, I guess. But what happens when you put a second story on your house? No worries your eave only needs to get to 10' to provide shading for Indianapolis (and 12' for Seattle). ---------- There is truth to the diagram, because even partial shading windows lowers insolation, however the reality is without any overhang whatsoever southern facing windows will still have much lower insolation in the summer than either east or west facing windows. Don't give up south facing windows just because your overhangs aren't going to shade your windows completely. ETA: I do hope everyone is capable of recognizing satire. I was pointing out the problem with overly simple graphics. No one is suggesting a 10' overhang is acceptable, I am just pointing out the absurdity of a drawing that has the sun too low and the overhang too wide, used to demonstrate the key to orientation is an overhang.

How about grease on the ceiling? In the first image below from Victory's website, the size of the single device is smaller than the plume size at the ceiling. Even though the slots can pull from across the ceiling, impinging plume effluent will deposit moisture and grease. In the second image, the larger area and lower height will be more effective, but a more conventional hood will be better for the same area, else commercial kitchens would use a different design. Also, note that the higher the aperture, the more the plume can be deviated by relatively mild drafts, and the greater the plume disruption due to people moving about. Obviously, the trades among affordability, performance, and aesthetics are up to the home owner, and to each his own. As one who weights performance within the limitations of the architecture most highly, my choice would be different.

If you have a win8 device.. might want to experiment syn with SkyDrive. Probably attach or sync google things to it..

Win8 SkyDrive you can put everything in the 'cloud' So its all one source & don't really need sync unless your needs are for offline folder or files.

All my files are available to me from anybody's computer type device that has access the internet from anywhere on this earth that has internet access. Cell phone, Computer , xBox, etc all devices may easily access those files as if they were in memory or local storage .... by being in sync with the clouds..

Except for a very few files that I might use several times daily, I don't keep copies of many things on my computers.... all my files when saved to a folder actually get transferred instantly to the Clouds of SkyDrive and//or DropBox. Most would say all those files are Synced and virtually exist on my computer and devices and in actuality are stored and exist only in the clouds. My computer only has place-marker folders and icons.

OK, you're talking about Drop Box and such.

I'm not sure why people find the capability you describe to be useful, but I guess many do. My important backups are more suitable for external drives and redundant copies. The small capacity these services offer wouldn't do me much good. But it's great if it works for you.

I can't imagine you need to access your Xbox files from your phone.

Local remote hard drive is best I'm sure.
But most people dont have one,.. and many seem unreliable -- the majority of people dont seem to know how to do backups reasonably.. Most seem to make copies of the same stuff over and over and buy another huge hard drive every so often when they run out of room.

I have about 25 gb in SkyDrive free space and maybe 12gb free at DropBox. I'm not a picture taker or video maker or movie collector... I have too much free space.

SkyDrive has fairly cheap annual fees for more gb than most people would use for home type personal files.. SkyDrive ihas become part of windows 8 backup plans & their plans for the future. There's a whole lot of people wanting access to all their personal files on their cell phones so they can watch some movie or play their music while they grocery shop or wander around home depot ?. And when they are standing there praying to their phone blocking your path.. you pull out your cell phone and start text messaging your friends telling them youre gonna be late because some guy in front of you is watching the Titanic movie or playing its music on his cell sharing it with the cashier in the checkout line. When you turn around and look behind you, you notice everybody looks to be praying to their cell phones so you upload a video to youtube and a panoramic to SkyDrive and email him links. What the heck,, you nothing better to do while stuck in that checkout line.

I'm sure many hobbyist can eat up storage space fast with tons of things they save and let gathers dust.

I have had 2 external HDs over the years and both were reliable. I only back up my personal "stuff". When it gets full I delete the oldest. Anything of great importance I print out. The only thing I have lost are my email addys and I add those when my contacts email me. If I buy a new PC I just download everything again, no problem and it's all up to date. Firefox and Itunes remember me. I don't do sync because I see no need for it. I don't do business on my computer, tablet and especially on my phone. Even if I take a 2 week trip I don't have to have access to all of my "stuff", if I did I would just take my XHD and connect to my laptop.

And if you are visiting a local friend on a Saturday morning and she's making fresh bagels... and she suddenly wants to try your beloved honey, nuts and raison bagel recipe ?

If synced online somewhere you could simply use her computer to login to your skydrive and near instantly have that recipe on her monitor.

Very funny, but bagels are not that important. I would email her the recipe after I went home. LOL

Besides my recipes are not on my PC.

Lots of people have a more fun life than I do, but that is fine with me. Those days have passed for me but I have memories of the wilds of Africa, Peru, Panama Canal and visiting over half of the US states. I love the Pacific North West and Vancouver. Would move there in a minute if I could afford the high cost of housing there.
