If you're running Windows 98, your computer could be ancient from a technical standpoint. It would be interesting to know its age and see the specs (RAM, processor speed, and hard drive size). However, I suspect that, if the machine is as old as I think, it may be time for a new computer that can keep up with all the resource intensive demands of today's software. I'm not saying that you couldn't make this work, but you are at the point where you will continue to have more and more problems, and not have any tech support to fall back on. Many web sites have complex graphics and other features that will tax an older machine. It's like trying to fly cross-country with a rubber-band powered airplane.

You asked "I understand MS will still support 98 with sp3, would this be a good option?" It is XP with sp3 that MS is still supporting. Are you sure you have Win 98 and not XP?
98 has not been supported for a number of years.

Can you do this, DDS is a program that will scan your computer and create logs that can be used to display various startup, configuration, and file information from your computer. The program will also display information about the computer that will allow us to quickly ascertain whether or not malware may be running on your computer. To use DDS, simply download the executable and save it to your desktop or other location on your computer. You should then double-click on the DDS.scr icon to launch the program. DDS will then start to scan your computer and compile the information found into two log files. When DDS has finished it will launch the two Notepad windows that display the contents of these log files. The contents of these log files can then be attached to a reply. I find this interesting as I thought AVG ended Win98 support with the introduction of v8.0 released April 24, 2008. I would like to be wrong as I have old reliable out in the garage without any AV on it.

agree 98 is very very out dated and out of support, XP with sp2 will end support shortly in July.
I can not imagine any pc that was from the time of 98 that could support or run windows 7, many with xp will not run windows 7.

Check the info on your pc and let us know what you have there.

It's HP pavilion media center, Intel (R) 4 CPU 3.0 GHz, Memory 1.0 GB, 200 hard drive of which 160 GB free space available on C. It was set up 2005. Can we start up again?

The question several of us have is what operating system are you using? If it was new in 2005, it is likely that your OS is Windows XP.

Please check and let us know if it's Windows 98 or Windows XP.

she did say it was xp in her reply title not in the body of the reply so it may have not been noticed.

I just did not think it could be 98.

I do believe that AVG is now currently on version 9 now so that may be the problem, you need to go get the new version 9 so you stay up to date. Or if you want to change to something else like AVAST or MSE then you would need to use the AVG removal tool to take out AVG before you install any other product.

I think you can just install the new version of AVG over the old one but you can always check their site for recommendations
