I doubt you can undo what has happened, except by doing it manually. It sounds like you put them into some order of personal preference, and somehow they got alphabetized when you didn't want that. Once you get this changed back, you should make a copy of the favorites to keep as a backup. You don't say what browser you use, but there is usually a way to make a copy.

One thing I typically do with a site I visit often is to rename it with a "1-" in front of the name. That way, if they get jumbled, I can just alphabetize them and all the ones with "1-" in front come to the top.

I use the alphabet to force my bookmarks when I choose to strong-arm the system. Similar to kudzu9's process, I will use a- b- c- , etc., --- or aa- bb- cc- , if I previously set up and abc arrangement.

what browser are you using? that would help us be able to give you some options.
One thing you may be able to do that might help is do a simple system restore to the date before you made that change and see if it returns them to the order you want if not the system restore is easily reverted.

for the ones you use daily one method I use is to create a folder on the actual bookmarks toolbar on the browser bar, using the bookmark toolbar is very easy and time saving. I create a folder labled daily and in it I put all of the sites I visit daily, then to open all of those sites I just go up top to the bookmark bar to that folder and right click on the folder and select open all in tabs and with that one click I have all of my daily sites open and ready to view. Creating folders on that bookmark toolbar is a great way to organize things and have them right at hand. I am using firefox so these directions are for that browser. to create folders on that bar just right click on the bar and select new folder, to change names of things like folder name or fave name just right click directly on it and choose properties then change the name there and save.
If your bar is not showing go up to the top click View then toolbars and make sure there is a check mark for bookmark toolbar.

I do know that IE has a favorites bar that you can drag and drop websites to from the url address bar so if you have sites you visit a lot you can do that too. Here are the directions for utilizing the links toolbar in IE as your bookmark toolbar.

Y'all are so smart - I use IE7 and will try to go back to the date I remember when they were O.K. Last week they were the way I wanted them. If that doesn't work, I like the idea of a bookmark toolbar. I'll let you know if I get them back. Thank you.

I have another related problem & clue to what went wrong.

I tried tonight to look up (again) favorite settings on a TV guide and rather than the channels I chose ALL the channels show in the guide rather than the ones I picked. So yet another setting has changed - I thought that might indicate to you all what I can do to get my settings back the way I had it. Thanks.

That doesn't mean anything in regard to your original problem. To fix the TV guide issue, delete that favorite and start over...

Kudzu - ALL my favorites I chose on TV guide are gone & it happened at the same time as my Favorites list which re-organized itself, so to speak.

what happened when you tried a system restore to when it was all ok?

Raven - could you send steps? Or even refer me to a site that does? I'm sorry, I always worry when I try something like system restore - I know, not too techie swift but I'd appreciate it (simple instructions please)

choose a date from the calendar when things were working properly, if it does not fix the problem you can revert it back.

If you have done any windows updates in the time after the restore date you go to then you will need to get those again most likely so be sure you check if you need updates after you do the system restore. Other wise everything will be as it is.

There is no Windows 8 operating system. Perhaps you are thinking of your browser--Internet Explorer 8?

now remember to go visit your windows update site and get any updates you need because if you did a restore back to then you will have some updates you will need to get again.
And make sure your antivirus does an update also.
