Are you only interested in free hosting sites?

I would consider a paid one - if I saw the value. My one concern is that I don't know if Framechannel can be fed by one of these sources - and I'm pretty sure Tivo only does photobucket and picasa web.

I hear smugmug is good. Which are you thinking about and why are they worth considering?

Problem with some or a lot of them is that they have limits as to how many you can host on there for free and if they do allow you to host freely they usually have it in the agreement that you must purchase something from them during the year for example you must order prints from them. Read the fine print!!

I do like imageshack since it has the firefox add on and other neat goodies.

I also use www.winkflash.com for setting up albums it has unlimited hosting and thus far does not require you to purchase from them,however as most do you do have to have activity on the account, if you let it sit with no activity for a long time many state in the fine print they can delete the account.

Flickr free has limits as to how many pictures you can have on there at a time.

Picasa has pretty good options, I personally do not use it but know a lot of people that really like it.

I am starting to read some of the fine print. The Flickr limit of only 200 photos available for viewing at a time - and only being able to upload a certain number per month - are dealbreakers for me. When I finally get around to organizing my photos so I can share them with family and friends - I don't want to have to only upload a small number of them per month - I want to do them all. I imagine that after the initial batch, there won't be as many - until I digitize my slides - then I'll have another batch, etc. I know folks like Flickr - but those 2 limitations are big ones for me.

I finally found the full list of services that can be used with framechannel - it does also include smugmug - and picasa, photobucket, webshots, flickr, facebook. Only photobucket and picasa will work on my Tivo. If there were a way to access my photos from my computer to my Tivo (and there must be) - then I wouldn't have to worry about using a hosting service to view photos on the tv - and I could just use the service above the most meets my needs.

Anyone know if I can get my computer's photos to show up on my Tivo (I know this is getting far afield of the topic).

I think using multiple hosting services will be a hassle for me - so as good as imageshack sounds, if it doesn't work with framechannel, it might not be best for me. before I rule it out, Raven, can you tell me what the firefox extensions for imageshack allow you to do that's so handy?

I would like easy of uploading, no limits on how much to upload or store (although I don't imagine storing tons - I do think it would be more than 200 pictures - and periods of more heavy uploading than others), good organization.

I guess so far it's between photobucket, picasa and smugmug.

Further pointers and considerations are still appreciated.

I'm just curious... I don't know exactly what you are doing... Why do you want to upload/download... and not just simply serve pictures off of your computer hard drive ?

Hi, Mikie. Well - there's two answers.

the first is that I know so little that when I explored the Tivo menu, I saw that I could view pictures on my photobucket account. Seeing pictures on my tv was a thrill. I just found out this evening that I could get my photos from my pc to my television via my Tivo - directly - no need to upload to a service and download from there. So that was just my ignorance.

The other reason is that I'm trying to get the family photos hosted somewhere so that my sister, my mother, her kids (one away in college) and I can all share photos. If we upload them to a service, we can send them to each other's pc's or picture frames. At least that is my preliminary grasp of the situation. The wireless frame I am getting my sister and husband can get pictures from framechannel - which allows many of us different means of getting pictures to it - whether it's my neice on facebook, of my on some service - either smugmug, picasa or photobucket. So the hosting is for sharing with family members in other places. Am I getting that right? That would be a good use - and not extra work?

lynn the one firefox addon that I use pretty much daily for image shack is the image shack right click it adds a new item in your context menu so you simply right click on any picture and you see a new item which says send to imageshack and it sends it directly to your imageshack account so any pic you spot on any website it is that easy to get to your account, it also has an option for windows once you have an image shack account which will allow you to right click any pic on your pc and send to image shack instantly to your account. Those are very handy for me.
They are not found at the firefox add ons page however they are at imageshack tools.

It is sounding like photobucket or picasa might be your best choices with those guidelines you have. I do also have a photobucket account and they have recently come out with a photobucket firefox add on but I don't use it that much more of a back up if I need it.

Thanks Raven for the exlanation of imageshack and the right click option. Right now I'm not sure when or why I would want to capture a photo from the weg and save it to my account. I have used Outwit firefox extension which searches for pictures on the web (and I believe it saves them in an Outwit folder). I've used that a couple of times - for printing neat photos on my daughter's bd invitations - but I can't think of much else I'd use it for.

I thought I could get photos from my computer to my Tivo - but my efforts have failed so far. Unless someone here knows how to do that, it mean a visit to the Tivo forums.

So I'm on hold for now.
