SubZero Pro 48 or Miele 30' fridge + 18' freezer

We are looking at these two alternatives. There is many threads comparing the SubZero and Miele side-by-sides. But not much information about the SubZero Pro 48.

Is the Pro 48 just not very popular? If you have one, I would love to hear your impressions and experience with it.

We considered the Pro 48 (for about a split second) because the DW loves the look. It is VERY expensive. Our choices boiled down to the Miele, the Thermador columns, and the Sub BI 48. We chose the BI 48 and are very happy with it.

The Pro 48 seems cool, and I think it has popularity from that point of view, but I think it doesn't sell that well because it's a very specific look, and very expensive. It is free-standing, I believe, which is a plus for some, but I think most SZ devotees prefer built-in/integrated/panelled. I think the organization of the unit is interesting if it fits your lifestyle.

I have the Miele 30" all fridge with the 30" freezer. I love them. For me, it was a matter of not being able to put together a combination of SZ units that would fit well, look good and serve my needs well. I didn't like the BSH columns, but when their Miele second cousin came into the showrooms I knew it was the answer.

I love my coolers! The drawers are particularly useful. I can put a full sized filled platter in one. For daily use, I put meats in the bottom one and produce (fruit + veg settings) in the other. The deli drawer is a dream for flat packages. I put the butter box lower down, and use the top of it as a shelf; they show it at the top because in old style fridges that was the warmest part of the fridge (heat rises), but with the cold air vent at the top that's not really true anymore and it's more useful lower down. The lighting is amazing. I miss it when I'm looking for things in other people's SZ's. I rarely move the shelves because I've found an arrangement that works just right for me, but they move really easily, even with a few things on them.

Negatives: The latches for the drawers are a little too plasticky and can be off when you put the drawers back. After you fix the seating, they tend to squeak for awhile. If you're into big bottles and jugs, you'll have to devote shelf space to them. I don't do jugs, so I really didn't want door shelf space for them. I do use a door shelf for half gallon refillable water bottles, in the rectangular shape of old fashioned milk bottles. Those fit fine. :)

Freezer: The icemaker makes pillbug shaped ice. I like it better than long crescents. In the 30" the drawers have plastic dividers. I find them more useful than not, but they're occasionally annoying. I could fit more without them, but they make organization easier. Same issue with the squeaking if you get the drawer off kilter. The supercool is super.

We are looking for a 30" built-in fridge for our kitchenette, and seem to have narrowed it down to: Sub-Zero BI-30U Miele KF 1811 SF Liebherr C 1651 Unfortunately, I can not find the prices online for neither Miele nor Sub-Zero, but Liebherr is quoted at about $4800. I'm sure, the others will be more... Sub-Zero, actually, has one feature going for it (besides being American-made) Â the compressors are on the top. This means, that while being the same height, more of the usable interior is reachable to a short person. My significant other is 5' tall, so this is a concern... But if it is as hard to open as comments suggest ("shoulder dislocation" is already mentioned here), then she may prefer Liebherr anyway, and just surrender the top shelf to me... Miele is an enigma, though Â any feedback on that? Thanks! Yours, doofus

Thanks Marcydc. Changing the first filter was hard because the installer used big honkin' working man muscles to tighten it so tight we needed tools to unscrew it (I had psychologist man muscles working on it, but he needed pliers for leverage). The real difficulty, however, is changing the filter, and fixing the filter code, without warming up the freezer. After my third change I've learned a few things: The book says that when the filter light first comes on it's just a warning, and when the light changes state (starts or stops blinking--can't remember which), it's time to change. Tech help told me I should change as soon as it comes on, and that the trouble I've had resetting the filter indicator comes from letting it go to the end. In that case, it has to be changed in program mode rather than customer mode. The other thing I've learned is not to even try to reset right after changing the filter. My unit won't go into customer mode if it's even a little warm, and if it loses too much cool, it won't go into program either. It's basically trying to say, "Shut the door, idiot!!!" It's easy enough to change the filter and wait a number of hours. I always set aside some ice, because you're supposed to throw away the first 24 hrs. worth, so waiting another 6-12 hours is no biggie. But what defines "hard"? For me, it's the procedure to get into customer mode or program mode. It's arcane in a way that only a German engineer could like. It's like looking for easter eggs in a computer game. I can't hold the instructions and do the routine at the same time. That's "hard".

fori - loved the comment about the fridge hiding. It really does look like that in the drawing. taggie, I too like the 48 but think it's too big and don't like the transition on the right (i.e., no wall). greendesigns - thanks. Tupperware is a good idea. I tend to pack as much into whatever space I have (and regularly throw out stuff from the fridge I've forgotten about). I looked at the Electrolux but found some bad reviews. Another option I've considered is the 32" Frigidaire Pro. lascatx - I do have a big case of fridge envy, you're right, but I'm not sold on the freestanding fridge yet. I hear what you're saying about symmetry. motherof3sons - thanks, problem is, I know what I don't like (what I have)... something is just not right with the sink wall the way it is. Speaking of your tile, I'm ready to come help you tile, just to see how it looks:) ci_lantro - thanks for the dissenting opinion (always good to hear), but I do like the wall. I think in your case, you can go either way. In Rocco's first example, I actually don't like how they frame the top of the fridge because it is unnecessary. The room has a very tall ceiling and there are no top cabinets there. So the extra cabinet looks a little odd. Also, it throws off the symmetry to the floating shelf on the other side. In the second examples, it looks much cleaner. and i think it's perfect. So I think if there are no tall cabinets, you shouldn't frame it.. But if you do, then you can go either way. In Redlover's example, there is some tall cabinets on another wall, but I still think it looks a little odd because the wood frame has no function, it's not reallya cabinet. However, I think the wood framing provide stylistic unity for the kitchen. Since in that example, the kitchen is not going for modern, but going for more elegance. So, besides having top cabinets or not, style of your kitchen is also a consideration. Frameless is a little more modern, clean, it may even feel a little commercial. But the frame maybe necessary if you have a more "elegant", "traditional" kitchen. In your case, I think you can go either way. I'll probably not frame it since the frame probably won't provide usable storage, unless you are going for the elegant look.. then frame it. Lastly, looking at your kitchen layout, your main sink is very far from your range and the fridge. So, you can only use that for cleanup purposes. So your prep sink near the fridge became extra important and you will spend a lot of time preping there. It's a bit hard to see exactly how big of a prep sink you have but it look a little small from the rendering, esp if you get the kind that it's narrow on the side of the faucet. I'll advice getting a sink that is "normal" size, wide, and shallow for your prep sink. I am adding a photo of how we do it in our kitchen .. we have a very small kitchen but we lean toward modern and clean look. So we need lots of cabinets and we have to frame it. Here is the "wall" behind my island (w/sink).
