New Samsung refrigerator too noisy. Please help pick replacement.

I just purchased a sxs Samsung RS261MDRS and it makes a humming sound that I can hear and feel it vibrating on the other side of my house. I called Brandsmart cs once I noticed the hum and they quickly replaced it with the same model. I thought it was defective. It's been less than 24 hours and this one is doing it too. Is this normal with new fridges?

The samsung replaced a 13 year old whirlpool sxs that still works fine and never made this kind of noise. My kitchen is open floor plan and open to the family room. The fridge sits inside a cut-out in the wall, so it looks built-in. I feel like the cut-out acts as an amplifier and disperses the vibration and hum through out my entire house.
I even measured the sound and it's coming between 48-50 dB when the compressor is running (seems like all the time), compared to 35-36dB of ambient sound.

It's driving me crazy! I know that it's going back, I just don't know what to replace it with. Any suggestions?

You say the previous Whirlpool unit is not having any problems ... so why did you buy a new one? Maybe put the Whirlpool back into use.

Newer fridges with inverter compressors make a different sort of noise, some don't like it or find it louder. That said it certainly isn't normal to feel it vibrating on the other side of your house.

Well I have a lg french door 24.7 refrigerator and it's been a joy to own so far. The doors close via hydraulic assist, the led lights actually illuminate every shelf unlike the ge profile with single cluster at the top of the fridge. The ice maker makes ice, never seen it without any ice and we use it every day. Speaking of the ice dispensor I really love the stainless steel switch, other are cheap plastic, and the two bright led lights that actually illuminate the dispensor area so you can actually see your cup. The doors are solid, the ge felt strange and the door handles flexed on it as did the sears units I looked at. I bought mine a hhgregg and also got the 5 year extended warranty just in case but so far the only thing I've done is change a water filter. Speaking of filters lg changed the model to a new upgraded filter so keep that in mind if you want to replace it and don't see the one listed in the manual. I also have to say that lg has been fantastic for me with their steam washer and dryer that I also have, the red units on pedestals with the green led panels. They wash and dry effectively and the led lights in the tub so you can see your laundry at the end of the cycle is a very nice touch. My experience with lg has been very good so far and I would not hessitate to buy another appliance from them. I did however skip their dishwasher in favor of the samsung unit because of the features that the samsung had.

You're both so welcome! Susan...I'm a research fiend and tend to over analyze every single product that we put into our home (we just finished building our own house). I call it being persnickety...DH calls it anal. LOL Hosta...I'm a major bargain hunter. :o) I picked out the washer & dryer that I wanted and then started searching for better deals. I actually purchased the pair on eBay for $1100 which included shipping (no tax either!). They were dealer overstock. Everything was brand new in the unopened manufacturer's shipping crates/boxes and was delivered on pallets. I also got the pedestals that go with them from another seller in Canada for $55 each. I did have to pay about $70 to have them delivered, but the cost still came out to less than half of what I would have spent at Lowe's. :o)

Always use Samsung brand filters. Filters from other manufacturers, even if they indicate compatibility, may damage your fridge and water filter housing, or break off and leave pieces of the filter inside (like the cap), preventing a new filter from being inserted. A few years ago, the HAF-CU1 model's design was changed from a 2-rib lock to a 3-rib lock in order to provide a tighter fit and better seal. However, the new filter design will still fit in older models of refrigerators, which is why the model and part number was not changed. The first time you switch to the 3-rib type, you may need to perform the "fully unlock the housing" procedure described here, even though the old 2-rib type was also a genuine filter. If the old filter inserts easily but the new filter does not, it is because the old filter is not opening the locking mechanism all the way to make room for the correct Samsung brand filter. It only opens the lock enough for itself to get out. To fix this, hold the old filter in the locking mechanism and turn it all the way open before letting it come out. This is sort of like using the old filter as a screwdriver to open the lock all the way. The steps are: Temporarily reinstall the old filter. While pressing the filter into the housing, turn it to the left as far as it will go, even past the point where the filter could be removed, until the filter can no longer be turned left while held into the housing. Remove the old filter, and install the new filter. If this method does not work, or the old filter is no longer available to use, visit our Support Center to request service.

For many years now, we have had a family of crazy, confused squirrels in the neighborhood. That's pretty funny, when it's not your own neighborhood under attack! (mrspete-there's no state law in WA to remove raccoons as you have.) According to the humane society raccoons are usually dead within 1-3 days of becoming infectious We're NC, and I have no idea about how long a raccoon can live with rabies. I only know that in my traps, his lifespan is the length of time it takes me to realize he's caught. ETA Trapping raccoons is tough. Maybe we had idiot raccoons here, but we're pretty adept at catching them. First the association tried putting marshmallows in the trap (they LOVE marshmallows) I had no idea they go for marshmallows. I've been giving them Hostess cherry pies from the dollar store. Why? 'Cause that's what Trapper Tony (yeah, his real name, or at least it's how he introduced himself) taught me to use, and I never branched out to other items. But I like the idea of using marshmallows. I'd say use the small ones. It'd make 'Ol Ricky go into the cage and stay long enough to gather up a bunch of small pieces .... giving us a better chance that the trap'd snap shut on him. I'll take the raccoons over the skunks that let lose during the night which has me waking up with that acrid burning taste in the back of my throat, We have both, and I don't know how to choose between them; at least I can catch the raccoons; the skunks continue to allude my cages. As for the skunks, until a few years ago, I was unaware that Pure Stink can wake you from a sound sleep. In closing, I must echo an above poster: This is a great thread.

Thanks, hvtech42. How can I know if a fridge has an inverter compressor?

I forgot to mention that I'm remodeling the kitchen and my beige 13 year old whirlpool is moving to the garage.

Well, the correct name for the compressor is either a "Linear Compressor" or a "Variable Speed Compressor".

Most fridges with the "Variable speed Compressors" do not make noise. My 2006 Jenn-air fridge is absolutely silent and it is very difficult to determine if the compressor is running or not~~~something that became a bit of a "Pita", when I started to see wild temp fluctuations in the freezer temp~~~~was the comp[ressor running or not???
Fortunately, I found a very competent sevice company and they fixed the temp gyrations.

Also in the training manual for some of the fridges with the variable speed compressors, they warn the "trainees" in these classes that they will have to use their voltmeters to tell if the compressor is running , as they won't be able to hear the compressors!

I'm not sure that a linear compressor is exactly the same thing, as a "Variable speed compressor."
I would have to do more research. I believe I read that Samsung does use a linear compressor, whilst Whirlpool uses what they call the variable speed compressors.

There are of course always exceptions!
One or 2 ppl complained about a "wah wah" sound on a Liebherr, which does use one of the newer style compressors, and I think there "May have been" a "Whine" or two about some fridges that used the variable speed compressors~~~but~~~~~those are exceptions to the rule as I mentioned.

Your's hums, mine rings! Talk about maddening!! Problem with switching refrigerators is they will likely all make some sort of noise, and who's to say if the next one won't make an even more annoying sound? It is also likely that identical refrigerators will not make identical sounds (I've witnessed this first hand). And, as dodge59 points out, some supposedly "silent" models will "whine" or go "wah-wah" ... neither of which sounds appealing at all. As for the vibration you are experiencing ... something is off there.

You have my sympathies. I am very sensitive to noise as well.

It's nice and quiet.
Get another Whirlpool.

Inverter, variable speed, whatever. All variable speed compressors used in refrigerators are inverter compressors so neither term is more "correct" than the other. There are linear inverter compressors but those are only used by LG. This being a Samsung, it would have a rotary compressor like most fridges on the market.

Most higher end fridges do have inverter compressors, so I'm sure that's what this Samsung has. However you may find a different make has a less annoying sound to you because of other design differences.

Avoiding inverter/variable speed compressors is pretty tough, they are ubiquitous nowadays because of their lower energy use. My GE has one, I'm not bothered by the sound. The big con to these compressors is that they add another expensive control board that can fail and complicates the troubleshooting and repair process. They are known to some in the service industry as "perverter" compressors, LOL.

IIRC, noise is one of the things CR was critical about concerning Samsung fridges, along with power usage.

@hvtech: the term "inverter", be it used for a MW, a fridge or an AirCon system, simply means that the motor in the unit is of DC brushless type, not the traditional AC kind.

The BL motor system is more efficient and its RPM can be easily modified (the "variable speed" thing) but it needs complex driving circuitry (usually a uC and power transistors); this is an additional point of failure, thus the overall reliability is degraded.
