Trend Micro running out

My Trend Micro anti spyware will no longer be updated as of July 1. So if I want update service I have to buy a the new, current version. (Of course, they never told me that when I purchased it, and my subscription is good until november.) They sent me complicated rigamarol for deleting the old and installing the new, which will take something like 16 hours on my dialup.

I have Windows Defender, which is regularly updated. Is it sufficient protection by itself? Does it have a firewall? I have Windows XP.

is your trend micro only antispyware or is it antivirus as well or a complete suite including both of those and a firewall?

You can get malwarebytes free which is about the best antimalware product around just update it and run the full scan once a week. Also available free is superantispyware another excellent product. If you need an antivirus you can get AVAST free or AVG free. And there are several good free firewalls available.
If you need links to any of those please just ask or do a search on this forum for the product name.

Windows Defender is a very good anti malware program in my opinion. Fully automatic too but I would advise checking occasionally just for peace of mind. Your current MS firewall is only a one way, which means it stops incoming problems but any phone home spies on the computer can report on you.

As you are on dialup isn't there a friend, neighbour or relative who would download which ever program you elect to use and burn to CD or copy to a thumb drive?

Thanks, Mikie. I tried that and it said components missing. It then gave me the option of going to a restore point which I did and was able to run the virus program. It found the trojans - 3 - and quarantined them. I guess I'm good now...? (A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing - I'm just hoping I didn't cause another problem - lol)

if you just download the version of AVG you will get linkscanner included, it has been the cause of some problems for some people causing slow downs and extra cpu usage so AVG put out a FAQ on how to install with out the linkscanner which is what many are doing and it seems to be much better. to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, It is always best when possible to download directly from the vendor site rather than some other site unless the vendor directs you to a mirror site for download. That way you know you are getting the latest versions provided by the vendor and less likely you are getting a compromised version. Be sure you get the superantispyware free also it will clean any spyware from your pc when you updated it and scan with it weekly. the spywareblaster all you do for it is hit update about once a week then hit the enable all protection button so the shield turns green that is it.

OK, I ran the MBAM and it found nothing. I am using AVG free 8.5. Was considering going to Avast from what I've read. My hourglass icon is not staying on as long as it was. Can't remember when I did a defrag on this computer, maybe never. Thought about this when it took so long to run the TrendMicro. Found a Win XP (Simmons) book which should have the instructions. I copied suggestions from ravencajun of Jan 4, 09 and plan on structuring my security along those lines. Also need to find those 17 files that need deleting, "vulnerable"? the other option, if you can not turn off the trend micro from it's icon in the systray down by the clock, is you can go to your start up area and set it not to start at start up, which will then allow you to go to add remove and remove it since it will not be running, I had to do that to remove McAfee. You can also get the free Revo Uninstaller which does a great job of getting stuff removed and it also has a startup manager in it so you can see just what is starting up when you boot the pc and you can change that in the manager. They have super directions with pictures for each option that is built in to Revo. Revo Uninstaller Main features of Revo Uninstaller each has a read more link which can lead you to links to the user manual for each.

Microsoft is coming out with a free antivirus real soon here. Supposed to be the real deal. Some news said in July ?

Thanks for that info Mikie. I had read last year that MS One Care would be renamed and offered as a freebie but then the silenced seemed to be deafening. Good to know they are still making headway with it.

My guess is the Morro beta will become public when they quit selling OneCare which is almost, right about now. End of month I think.

I ran into the same situation with Trend Micro. I called them and told them I would prefer a CD because downloading from a site takes too long. I deleted the old version and added the new one and it worked great but there were more updates that were over 3 meg. I called them and asked for a CD for the updates and they sent one. I have DSL but like the CD for those "late night" crashes.

Does anyone know if the anti virus from Microsoft is just for VISTA?

Microsoft Security Essentials this news says it is for xp, vista, win7. No sure if a 64bit version will be out in time for the tuesday public release or not.

Here's a link to Microsoft's new Security Essentials Virus/Spyware program.

On Vista here noticed a reduction in boot time & about 5% less total memory use in Task Manager as compaired to running avast. Task Manager shows it using 3mb.

Read it may be nice for netbooks, but it may slow down slighly some of the more intensive netbook programs. slightly.

PCAdviser news says only a limited number of public downloads will be available starting today at 1pm EST.
