Safari 5 Released

Apple let loose its Safari 5.0 browser -- for Mac and Windows. I downloaded an earlier version looking for a backup to Firefox. My IE8 will not run and would require backtracking to the stone ages to re-install, followed by numerous Windows updates to catch up (it is not in the Add/Remove programs). Safari permits users to "kill" the little popups that pollute just about everything.

I suggest you fix IE 8, you just can't ignore it. Google uninstall IE 8 .

It's kind of like ignoring that funny sound on a car.

Thanks zep and the funny sound does bug me because I know it is broken -- but the fix might be worse than the sound. IE8 cannot be removed with the Add/Remove and the best I can find is MicrosoftÂs alternate solution. That would be running a "%windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe" in the Run/Cmd which then shows that, in my case, 130+ updates or programs might have to be redone or might not run in the proper manner. Some of them include: all security and MS updates, Foxit, Open Office, Adobe, tax programs, Java, Winpatrol, Avast, audio and video drivers, Kindle, Revo, Acronis, etc. If I had depended on IE as a browser before the IE8 debacle, I would go for a fix. But I have not used IE but for a dozen times over a few years Â since I started using Opera, then Firefox.

A fascinating safari, thank you Kitty! I appreciated the peep into all these gardens and I believe I would have a plumeria, too, in the right climate, a big sculptural one. Now I don't covet any more exotics. It's enough to have to drag the agapanthuses and the red leaved cordyline inside every autumn. Conifers are already enjoying a minor revival in Sweden and my not so trendy husband bought a yellow Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' last year because he liked it. I am not so sure because we have two tall native pines next to it that will perhaps make it look too unnatural when it grows up. Daylilies, echinaceas, hostas and heucheras are enormously popular and many people collect them. But Swedish gardeners in general are fairly conservative, at least those who have not paved over their gardens or have only lawns. The oldfashioned granny garden is still the ideal for most people, full of peonies, irises, asters, poppies and the common yellow daylilies, no fancy varieties. The most common roses are either one of two spinosissimas, Double White or Poppius, two albas, Maxima or Minette, Blush Damask and a few of the more common gallicas. We had postcards made of these common roses to give to people who came to have their roses examined at our Roses Antique Shows 2005-2010, a national project to collect heritage roses. People were happy to have a name to their roses but it was boring for us investigators to see so many of the same varieties on every occasion. Some more unusual roses came, of course, and 1500 of them are now grown in a trial field.

Does anyone else watch Wild Earth Safari Live?

We've watched Safari Live for years. We have gotten tired of their obsession with cats, kills and close-ups of cats eating their kill. We still glance at it occasionally. We've started putting Pete's Pond up. It is also operated by Wild Earth. It's a live cam on 24 hours manned by "zoomies" from their home computers. In the past 2 weeks we've seen: eland, giraffe, black-backed jackal, elephants, warthogs, impala, zebra, baboons, hyena, waterbuck, monitor lizard, guinea fowl, Egyptian geese, ostrich, hare, steenbok, African wildcat, crocodile, vervet, kori buzzard, civet, tortoise, dwarf mongoose, stork, African bullfrog (huge). We also saw lions.....and a kill. The best sighting was 5 cheetahs....all together...which is highly unusual.

What surprised me the most was the sheer amount of animals. Somehow I had envisioned spending hours driving around before you see any in the far distance. Of course, we were easy customers, who didn't have a check list of 'must sees', at least not initially. On the first day, our guide asked what animals we'd like to see. My answer, giraffes and zebras, was met with laughter, kind of asking to see squirrels and bunnies where I live. We later upped our requests, like a giraffe drinking, lots of babies, den of hyenas with young ones, wild dogs, and animals hunting (hyenas, lions) and mating (lions). They delivered everything, except a giraffe giving birth :) DD filmed hyenas killing a wild dog (I didn't look), which was a big deal and was sent to the wild life dept. because wild dogs are unique to the area and the only animals they keep track of. Unlike in, say Kruger National Park, the reserves in the Okavango Delta are unfenced, vast land, with camps only accessible by bush plane (about 8 cabins, so no more than 16 guests at a time. Some camps are more water oriented, others more land oriented although all combine the two. As far as time of travel, we went in August, which was ideal. Temperatures were chilly at night (around mid 40s) and early morning but warmed up considerably during the day (high 70s), very sunny and dry, about 11 hrs of day light. You get "bush babies" aka hot water bottles and blankest at night and during the early morning drive. My recommendation would be to do Victoria Falls first (we stayed at the Victoria Falls Hotel, very, very nice historic British hotel, with excellent service and food, and walking distance to the Falls), then do Chobe (at Botswana/Namibia border along the Sambezi River) for huge herds of elephants, zebras, hippos, crocs, and river cruise. And then head to Okavango Delta to two different camps, maybe also one in the Kalahari Desert. Lastly, Botswana (unlike Zimbabwe), despite poverty, especially in rural areas, is quite the African success story, with a stable democracy, high GDP and high education and health expenditures. It is also quite a bit safer than South Africa or Zimbabwe.

My Louise Clements is two years old and is a very prolific bloomer. I’m Coastal Los Angeles so temperatures are more mild but and we still get rust and powdery mildew. Louise is somewhat prone to mildew here but only when pressure is bad as it seemed to be last month (and to be fair she was next to some very prone roses). I don’t spray much. We did have a heat wave in February, and the blooms do get smaller in the heat and didn’t last as long but didn’t fry. The color also gets more pink as the blooms age.

But Microsoft updates do require the use of Internet Explorer, some version of it at least. So you must have an active version installed and ready to run. If you're not getting the updates, you are leaving yourself wide open for all sorts of malware and hackers.

grandms, thanks --- I think that I am getting all updates, including those for IE8. When I attempt to use IE8 it runs into a connection problem Â "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." Next, when applying the Diagnose Connection Problem, it cannot detect any problem with internet connection. Following that, it gives the ordinary reasons, bad typing, site temporarily unavailable, DNS is not reachable, DNS does not a listing for the websiteÂs domain, etc. Â irrespective of the site attempted, including attempting microsoft.com, the ultimate culprit. This incident is typical of my disdain for Microsoft. If I want a browser, like Firefox, I download it and it runs. If I download IE8 because it is "beautiful" versus 7, I do it and it becomes broken, but cannot return to IE7. I think (now that is dangerous) that along the way I, or some program, wiped out something that is basic to Windows and/or Explorer. Reading several forums and postings by others shows various solutions none of which has corrected my case. But I am not trying very hard because I have alternatives that work. And like zep says, you cannot ignore the noise coming from the engine.

have you tried just re-installing IE8 right over the top of it as it is now? Directly from the IE 8 site?

click on the appropriate version of your windows there and it will pop up the download exe for IE8, download and install it.

I am not a fan of IE either but you do need to have a working version should you need to get windows updates.

you might also try going to this MS page and scroll down to the Microsoft fix it tool and running it to see if it will fix the problem.

I would also suggest turning off all add ons
check out the Internet Explorer 8 plug-ins, open the Tools menu, and click on Manage Add-ons that will show most of the plug-ins in use by the browser. There you will have the option to disable them do so.

you can also try a reset
" 1. Close all open windows of Internet Explorer.
1. Open a fresh window of Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu.
2. In the dialog box that appears, select the last tab named Advanced (see figure).
3. The last button in the Advanced page of the Internet Options Dialog is named Reset. Click on the button.
Resetting the IE browser settings restores your Internet Explorer to the state when you installed it. This means that it removes all additional add-ons that were added to the Internet Explorer either intentionally or unintentionally. "

by the way which version of windows is on this computer?

Followed all suggestions. Another IE8 installed, disabled plug-ins, and reset settings. All updates to Windows and IE8 are in place without any problems. There are no problems getting updates from Microsoft and the computer is functioning well Â only the browser is broke. Using Media Center XP3 running on Gateway Amd 64X2.

did using the fix it tool on the MS page not fix it?

I think it sounds like something is interfering with it, which firewall and antivirus program do you have running on the pc?

I have read and heard that people that had problems with IE8 who tried using the version that is optimized for Google found it worked when the regular one did not, not sure why but you may want to give it a try.

First attempt was to see whether it was Avast or Zonealarm. When I turned off ZA, IE8 worked. Avast didn't affect IE. Spent a couple of hours performing ZA's suggested fixes, concluded that there was no ZA fix that worked. Well, you should have done this first -- uninstall ZA and get a new one. That worked. I was thinking that my old version of ZA was up-to-date, but I guess it wasn't. Thanks for the help.

well good for you!! you worked it out and found the culprit.

Glad it is working now and you have the za working also.
I remember early on when IE8 first came out there were several things that had conflicts with it and za was one of them.
