What do you use the clipboard for? I know it is there and does things, but I never "use" it. I use word for making documents, copy and paste from the internet to a word document. What kind of problems do you have with word and copy and pasting?

I've heard of a lot of Windows glitches since 1993, but the inability to copy/paste from/to Word is not one of them. I suspect a problematic mouse or a mouse setting which is not working the way you expect it to. Have you tried to highlight the text you want to copy and then pressing CTRL+C, and then using CTRL+V to paste the text? What happens when it does not work? Is there an error message?

The thing that threw me using copy and pasting with word was I could not edit some of it. I downloaded a list of books by my favorite author and could not edit it. Then I noticed there are 3 options when using paste. The third one allows you to change the format and edit it. Word is very hard to get used to after using Works.

So it looks like Asutype would replace Word. That might work.

Azinoh, if you look at the link that zep516 posted, you will get a feel for the problems people are having with cut/copy/paste. You can momentarily fix it but it recurs. There is no permanent solution, which is why I am looking for other ways to address it.

I think it's a memory management problem between Windows and Microsoft office. That's why rebooting solves the issue for a while only to return when the memory runs out, or the memory management not being managed in the right way by windows and Microsoft office...

Strange. I use an older version of word I have had for years and use it on windows 7 computers and copy and paste has never given me problems. Maybe because my version of it is so old and also our office is a student teacher version. Mary

After reading zep's link from beginning to end, I was reminded that I have experienced the copy/paste problem once before. It was while using Citrix from home to get to my remote desktop at work. I was in the habit of running Word on my local machine AND running the Word-within-Citrix at work, and was trying to copy/paste from work to my local machine. I never had a problem doing copy/paste on my local machine, only when trying to do it from work. My problem eventually went away and I suspect (don't know this for a fact) that one of the many servers running Citrix for multiple users was not properly configured and I was just unlucky enough to get connected to that one server. Are you also using a remote desktop, or is your problem occurring on your local machine only?

I notice that some of those with the problem were able to fix it. Since you referred to zep's link, am I to assume that you have tried all the possible solutions and that none of them helped you? Or is it that you just can't be bothered trying to fix it and you think paying for more software is a better option for you?

I use Libre Office it's free and I love it.

I have over time been trying various fixes from googling the problem and seeing and trying such suggestions, and, indeed, any that involve restarting the computer appear to solve the problem. And then it recurs. That's why I worded the original question as I did - I was trying not to waste your time coming up with solutions that I have already tried.

Haveyou tried uninstalling and reinstalling word. Mary

you could try pasting your stuff into a third party application, like Evernote. You'd then have to recopy and paste, which is a hassle, but if you need to . . .

Aputernut, I just downloaded Libre Office and I like it also. I will never buy office again. I have looked at others but this is so familiar to me, not a big change or a lot of learning. Thanks.

OK ladies and gents, what would I use to find Libre Office, would love to see the comparison to word which I usually use. Anything simple is my motto.

My computer is usually very fast, but it took awhile to download Libre and to install, be patient. I will keep word for now because I have a lot of lists and documents on it. Will use Libre for new documents. When I buy a new desktop, I will use only Libre. No more expensive MS office software.

When I set it up I customized the tool bars and closed down the center one. Then saved a blank document to my task bar tools folder.

You can't buy office anymore anyway I hear. I wanted to get a new version since mine is so outdated but my son said you have to pay a monthly fee for it now or something and you don't buy it. Maybe someone that knows more can explain that better. Mary

I bought mine when I bought my W 7 machine.

BTW I could have bought a new vista desktop today for $50, but I wasn't sure if you could still update it. If I had known I would have bought it, set it up and given it to someone. I googled it and I found the expiration dates, the extended date was still good, but nothing about what that would have supported.

My friend is running a vista desktop computer and just had updates today and it runs fine no problems. She has 2 newer laptops with 7 in case it ever goes. Mary

acraftylady, thanks. It has probably sold by now, but will walk over today and see. Last time I tried to give away a computer, no one needed it. We are living in a very affluent society when no one wants a free computer.

I have some info and differed views to add to this discussion:

1) Libre Office is a derivative of Open Office, it was a branch from a few years ago. The two are quite similar and both are free, flip a coin as to which you should use.

2) An install of Libre, or Open, or any other large software system involves a lot of files to download. How long the download takes depends on the internet connection - the speed of the PC or "how fast it normally is" has nothing to do with download time.

3) Microsoft Office is very much an active product available everywhere. The current version is Office 2013. It can be purchased in a box or also via download.

4) Vista is a dog, it was a big blunder. How bad it was is why Microsoft had to extend the support life of XP for as long as they did. Users avoided it. People only reluctantly and over time accepted Win7 as correcting most errors and problems Vista presented users with . I'd avoid any PC with Vista.

5) A 5+ year old PC being represented as "new"? I'd be skeptical about that.

6) Old computers are usually best given to your local recycler - if it's junk to you, it's junk to someone else too.

The only problem I had with vista was white out pages which required me to close the browser and open it again. No more than 6 the whole time I used mine. I think the reason people hate it or avoid it is that other people have bad mouthed it so much. There is so much talk about XP no longer being support that some have thrown away their XP computer because it will no longer be safe.

I did not see any one saying it would be represented as new.

I can't see anyone without a pc turning down a free one because of the OS. Why junk something because it is old if it is still useful. It would be good for a child who is just learning.

Ok I see now MS office 360 home is a subscription service. $9.99 a month and it says get things done from anywhere and any device. Have no use for that so now see I can get student teacher edition at office max. Mary
