Well the simplest way would be to download and install Ccleaner and run it at the default settings.

I suspect removing the cookies will not do much to speed the computer. What anti virus and anti spyware programs do you have installed, when were they last updated and ran? Which firewall are you using?

Installing Ccleaner taught me to read before I click ok. I wondered for quite awhile where I was getting that Yahoo tool bar. LOL

I am not sure what files you are looking at but I would not go deleting files that you don't know what they are, they could be the uninstall files for windows updates or hotfixes and those you really don't want to delete.
I use the programs that came with windows and let it clean up and that is all.

IF you are talking about your C drive then windows then security no I would not mess with those.

It says Ccleaner removes unused files.

How does it know the files are unused??
If because they were not used (active) for a long time, what if the time comes when I want to use them?

In other words just because I do not use them for a long time, I still want them.

Urlee if you are unsure of Ccleaner then use the MS provided disk cleaner at Start/All programs/Accessories/System tools/Disk clean up.

However I do feel you have been here quite a long time and have read many threads and I would venture that you have never read a post where the user has removed wanted files using Ccleaner set at the default settings. Ccleaner is one of those highly touted programs that do actually live up to the hype.

Run a test yourself. Run MS Disk cleaner then install and use the 'Analyser' feature on Ccleaner rather than the 'Run cleaner'. This will list all the files it would remove if you used the 'Run' button and having used the MS disk cleaner first it should be a fairly short list

Perhaps you are running more programs than are needed when the computer boots. Programs that are downloaded and/or installed sometimes adds itself to the startup programs and most of the time are not needed at startup. You can see the programs that run at startup by doing the following: Select Start - Run - then key in "msconfig" in the Run box -- without the quotes, then Okay. A box will show with several tabs. Select the Startup tab to see the programs. There wiil be some with a check mark. Those run at startup. Do not uncheck any until you determine whether it it okay to start without the programs that are checked. There are a number of sites that allow for searching the programs with recommendations to keep checked or not needed at startup. ppedia.com bleepingcomputer.com answersthatwork.com castlecops.com sysinfo.org. This may be a lengthy process. My startup has 33 programs listed but I permit only 6 to run when the computer boots. Make a list of the checked programs and do some research yourself.

how much memory do you have on it? RAM is cheap and it is one of the best ways to give new life to a slow and aging pc. low memory will make a pc run very slow. If you do not know about what is on your pc or want to know all about what is on it go get belarc advisor it is free and it will scan your pc then give you a detailed list of all the info about your pc, I print them off now and then to have them in my pc file should I need it.

When you say you found those files through internet options, I assume you mean that you went into internet options, then Browsing history, then Settings, then View Files. Is that right?

Deleting files from there won't help speed things up much, if at all. If anything, that would slow down your browsing. Temporary internet files are used so that if you visit the same sites repeatedly, you can retrieve unchanged content from the hard drive rather than from the internet.

The advice you've gotten already is good advice.

Here are some of the things I like to check for with a slow running PC.

Make sure you're not running a lot of programs you don't need to run. Get more RAM if your PC will support it. Scan for viruses and other malware. Run chkdsk/F periodically. If it has been more than a week since you shut down the PC and did a cold boot. Shut down and do a cold boot.
