dvd vs cd

I had a DVD burner installed on my Win XP. No software came with it. I have a Roxio cd burner from a previous machine I plan to use to make CD's and DVD's.

I need some help. What is the difference between DVD and CD? Mostly I want to burn CD backups to archive photos. Also, I want to start burning some CD's or DVD's of old BW photos to share with the family. Hoping they will play on television DVD players. Help me understand the concepts.

I'm going to have to second the VideoHelp.com site.
DVD's are just like CD's. Only they hold a lot more data.
Both can be used as data storage disks.
Both can be used as video disks.
CD's can be used as music disks.
There may be a DVD music disk but since I
don't listen to music I wouldn't know about it.

Disks that will be used in a DVD player
need to be compatable with the DVD player.
Some players support more formats than others.

At the very least you will need some kind of authoring software.
This is the software that will create the menues and chapters
And some software will do it automatically.
It all depends on how complicated or easy you want to make it.

Love the wind chime idea. I want something to keep the birds out of my tomatoe and that may work. I am also kicking around a larger project idea! I have to build new raised garden beds next year so I just may start collecting old CDs/DVDs from friends that would otherwise end up in landfills and doing a mosaic mural on the raised bed sides!! It may end up not being anything great or it may be really pretty........we'll see!!

Coho, I posted on the other thread before I saw this. Several years ago, I purchased a computer that had Norton installed. I could not burn a DVD on that computer until after I removed every trace of Norton. When I called Tech support at Norton, they told me that it was a known problem, and sent me a refund check. That was many years ago however, and I wouldn't think they would still be having that problem.

What's the make an model # We ask because, basically we just Google the make and model with the word dissemble in the search terms and hope to find some sort of instructions, I don't recommend it, but we could try to find instructions and you may make a decision at that point in time.
