Phish is an Internet scam designed to trick the recipient into revealing credit card, passwords, social security numbers and other personal information to individuals who intend to use them for fraudulent purposes. The scam is known as "phishing" and the communications are sent to appear to look as if they come from reputable companies. The e-mails often instruct the recipient to verify or update account information by requesting a reply to his e-mail with updated information, or by providing the recipient with a link to a website where the new information may be entered. Anyone who receives such an email should not respond to it, or click on any links provided, but should contact the company who purportedly sent the notice, to inform them of the scam.

Phishing is when the bad guys make a complete fake copy of a familiar website, such as your bank account, and when you unknowingly enter your user name and password it conveniently sends the information back to the bad guys who then make life miserable for you. So, no, you don't want anything to do with it and want to protect yourself from it.

Of course you should use good internet security programs and also be careful when going to a site from any email. There are other ways for internet criminals to fake you into going to a fake site such as adding links right into your favorites (should be protected by software though).

AOL was a very popular phishing target.

If you were to Google...squaretrade warranty....you'd see enough info to see that Squaretrade is the warranty and since you did make a purchase of a tablet, I think it is legit and not a phishing attempt. Walmart obviously has your email address since you purchased it online and they passed it along to Squaretrade. What I get out of this , however, is that even though your PAID FOR A WARRANTY you don't HAVE A WARRANTY until you download and install their software. If this was not clear to you at time of purchase, maybe you can dispute the charge if you want to. My experience is that extended warranties are more often than not useless...but to each his/her own.

I got two of these, one this morning that referred to me with a very old username that I may have used on the garden web long ago, and one a couple of days ago with my new log-in info. Could it be legit? I am new here to the forums, so I've received a couple of different confirmation emails from support, which is normal when joining a new site, and this came very shortly after. I did confirm the first one, thinking it was part of the sign-up, and got an email back from houzz: "Thank you for confirming your GardenWeb account on Houzz: Else. To help you get started we'have put together a few resources here. If you have any feedback you can always email us at gardenweb@houzz.com. The GardenWeb and Houzz Teams"

Could they be for someone who had the number before you? We started getting messages on our answering machine from a pharmacy for a woman that used to have our number over 25 years ago.

Thank all of you for your information. I'm finding, in my advanced years, that there is a population of pretty nasty people out there in cyberland as well as right in my neighborhood! My golden years are becoming very smoggy! Pat
