To re-glaze or not to re-glaze, that is my question
Comments (18)This decison was the biggest issue before we started to remodel and really held us back from starting sooner (we are now in the middle of it). We wanted to gut the bathroom ourselves but heard how hard it was to get the cast iron tub out. Ours was pink. We had bathfitters come, and the quote was over $3,000 for a custom tub and wall surround. Then we got a quote for reglazing -- $300. He said he would only do it in our downstairs bathroom where we have a window, but will not do upstairs becuase he won't use the chemicals where there is no window -- too dangerous to his health. So we were kind of bummed because getting the tub out from upstairs will be a bear. We were pretty set on reglazing because the downstairs is a guest bathroom and the bath/shower isn't used that much -- unless we move downstairs when we are old :) Then our plumber came to give us an estimate for the rough plumbing -- he suggested not reglazing because it doesn't last, and said here's a hint, take a sledgehammer to the tub -- which we did and it came out in 6 pieces in 1 hour -- and the town took it from the curb. He also begged us not to get our faucets from the big stores so he wouldn't have to rip our walls out in a few years. So now we have a new Kohler white cast iron tub downstairs and are not afraid to face the upstairs bath remodel. We will most likely get Americast upstairs because it is lighter. Just wanted to let you know what we found out about reglazing and an easier way to get the old tub out....See Morerefinishing old porcelain bathtub
Comments (5)Sorry mountainbasketmaker, this thread is several months old now and you may have moved on! We have an old cast iron bathtub that is the same vintage as yours. The white finish had seen better days when we bought the house, and I had it refinished 12 years ago. The biggest drawback is that you are told you can no longer use a bath mat with suction cups, and must find one with holes in it. The only one I ever found that fit the bill just wasn't secure enough to make the tub safe. Like everything else, the process has improved over time. They now can apply some kind of pebble finish before the spray coats, which eliminates bath mats altogether. I have no experience with it personally, but it is in use in several big hotel chains, and satisfies their liability concerns. The new surface is not as resiliant as the original. The longest warranty currently offered in our area is 10 years. Hope this helps!...See MoreBathtub--Reglaze or Replace?
Comments (7)We refinished ours, and the paint has been peeling off for the intervening 18 years. Not pretty, I have to admit. Maybe they can reglaze now for better results than we got with DIY back then. But if they can't, I agree that new is worth considering - never be easier than now is true enough. But oh, that tub was heavy; we moved it out of the bathroom to paint the tub and refinish the bathroom and it took all that two of us had. It's a small claw-foot tub, not even full size. A dolly would have been a really good idea. Question is, is the tub special? Could you get something you and your husband like as much? Ours is original to the house and there's something special about that that replacing with new can't beat. Someday we'll get a better reglazing done. Comments (8)I've never had a tub glazed, but have seen some that have. The ones I've seen is because I was involved with remodeling. We would get the call for plumbing work, which legally a licensed plumber must do. Anyways, the call was a last resort for taking out their freshly glazed tubs because their estimates for the plumbing work was "outrageous" (not sure how they thought remodeling would be cheaper since a licensed plumber had to do the hook ups) The tub "refinishers" would break out the drain work and overflows because they couldn't/wouldn't or whatever glaze around things, and they're not licensed to install any of the plumbing work to put it back together. Just thought I'd throw this out there for you, because you may be getting into something you may regret....See Moregsciencechick
