? regarding what I can get rid of.

I have an Intel processor, running Windows XP. I am running low on RAM only have a 512.. and I am loaded down with images that I use.

I am trying to speed up my computer. I was told to check out how many things I have running on my startup list in misconfig there are 43 items.

What can I get rid of? It is hard to understand what some of the terminology means. Like what is Telephony, crytographic, DHCP client DNS Client do I really need these things running all the time?

I don't see how you could have 43 programs under the startup tab. You must be looking under services, that's where Telephony, crytographic, DHCP client DNS Client are located and should be left running. Don't mess with them.
To make it simple to remove unnecessary programs that run at startup, get Startup Control Panel
And if you don't already have it get CCleaner the Slim version. CCleaner will not only clean your computer, but it has Startup control under the Tools tab, also a registry cleaner under Issues.

If you really want to mess with Services, search the internet for XP Service Tweaks and study them to find out what they do to be informed so as not to make a bad decision. Not a good place to uncheck services in msconfig.
This is usually done in Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services

You might consider buying another 512 megs or even 1 gig of memory as it is dirt cheap these days. I bought 2 gigs recently for close to Canadian $100. Your 512 is not bad if you do not use memory intensive programs but a bit more will work wonders in most cases.

If you decide to price memory you can use the Crucial link below to see what type of RAM you need and prices. You can also look elsewhere of course once you have determined which kind you need

For the most part I prune them, dig them up leaving as much of a "root ball" as I can and "package" them up with a note, if I know the variety, some sure start planting fertilizer and I put them on my curb with a FREE sign. I've always had takers. My best taker turned out to be a friend who knew a family that lost their mother and they were planting a memorial garden for her. Since then, I always give them first chance before I put them out on the curb. I've done this with some calla lilies that I put out with the caveat at how invasive they can become so I didn't have to feel bad if they took over. They knew what they were getting. I've had some monster roses from the previous owner that in order to get them out I had to cut down to the ground and dig out but that is the price I had to pay to get roses in the ground that I picked.

It's looking almost definite that I will be going down next Saturday the 11th. I am hoping to be at excalibur by around 10:00 if I am able to get myself out of bed early enough. I'd like to meet up with most people there but could work out other options. Just send me an email. Not to hijack this thread but we cut down an annoying black locust tree that was growing in a bad place and it's sprouting from several places by the trunk and I'm finding seedlings coming up in the garden too. I keep pulling them out and cutting the new branches off of the tree. What's the least environmentally harmful way to deal with this? I'm willing to keep hacking off the new limbs every so often unless that would be a permanent maintenance. Please advise.

Hi Loralee,
Another option is using 'msconfig' to remove unwanted programs from your startup.
Click on Start, then Run and type in msconfig and click OK. Now click on the Startup tab.

In Windows XP, there are no Windows files that are available to de-select, so you just 'need' to keep your antivirus and firewall software selected. If you have a wireless keyboard or mouse or network adapter installed, you would need to keep that selected also. * I like to have Weatherbug and Webshots start when I startup, but those are my preferences. After de-selecting the entries that are not wanted, click Apply and Close. You will receive a dialog box asking whether to Restart or Exit without restart. Choose Restart. After the computer has restarted you will receive another dialog box advising that you have worked in System Configuration Utility. Just place a check next to Don't show this message or launch System Restart again and click OK.
