New Computer Build - Monitor problems

Hello everyone,

IÂve been having a big problem with my new computer build, and IÂm hoping someone may have some ideas. Here are my specs:

ASUS P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard

BFG Tech BFGE981024GX2E GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB (512MB per GPU) 512-bit (256-bit per GPU) GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFD 150GB 10000 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive (2)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Conroe 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6850

PC Power & Cooling T12W 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

CORSAIR TWIN3X2048-1600C7DHX2GB PC3-12800+ (DDR3 1600+) DDR3 Memory

Here is the problem. I put the system together, and it powered on fine, but when the monitor was connected to the video card, nothing happened. The monitor wouldnÂt work at all.

IÂve tried the new video card in my older system, and it works fine so I know itÂs not the card. I assumed the motherboard had a bad socket, so I RMAÂd it, and received the replacement, but itÂs doing the same thing.

I also tried my old 7800 video card in the new system, and it also didnÂt power up the monitor.

I suspected maybe a problem with the RAM, but it seems this particular motherboard only supports DDR3, so I canÂt use any of my other RAM to test it.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this? I suspect also a BIOS problem, but I canÂt really access that without the monitor.

well of course the first question is did you try the monitor on another system to see if it worked and that it was not something dead on the monitor itself? Have you tried another montor on your system? Even if the monitor worked before, still try it out on another system now to make sure it is not the monitor.

Yes, I currently use the monitor on the system i'm using now, and I was planning on using the same one on my new system, so the monitor is fine as far as I can tell.

I also tried another monitor I had stashed away on the new build, and it also wouldn't work.

I should mention that I just took AOL off my computer after 8 years. I understand AOL leaves bits of itself all over as well. When I followed your instructions I ran into a snag but tried to continue on. Hopefully Norton is gone. Try right click on the desktop click Properties in the new window click Settings and see what the screen resolution is set to If necessary move the slider, you probably need 800 x 600 for your 17 inch monitor. If that is still too large go back and try 1024 x 768 Any better?

Vol. not loud enough on new monitor

I took the new monitor back to Best Buy. The "geek" girl hooked it up to a computer. She couldn't get any sound to come out so she told me it doesn't have integrated speakers. I told her that I had used a wire with greenish/yellow ends going from the monitor to the computer. So she found one, plugged it in and turned on some music. I couldn't hear it over the noise of the store. She had me lean way in over the counter, and said "Can't you hear it?" I said "Yes, barely, but shouldn't it be louder than that?" She told me that she didn't think there was anything wrong with it, she just thought it was made to not be very loud. They let me exchange it for another like it and it's the same, half the volume or less of my older one. I guess HP wasn't selling enough external speakers so they thought by reducing the volume on the cheap monitors they'd sell some.

So . . . . best not to post multiple posts about the same issue so as not to make for confusion. Disregard the following then : = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = If not, can you clarify . . . . Your computer has, for monitor connections : HDMI & DVI ?? Your monitor has : VGA, and . . . DVI ??? Here is a link to diagram of the different ports to help identify what you have. VGA, DVI, HDMI ports The ones on the left are just different versions of DVI. If you can't identify the other monitor's ports, could you state the model of the monitor so we can look it up.

So it is fair to say you heard the POST beep?

I see on that board you have a 24 pin power connector but up in the top rear corner of the motherboard behind the 9 pin DIN and USB hubs there is also a 4 pin power connector. Check this is seated correctly. He seems to be tucked in between the cooling fins and a black item, is it possible you missed it? Not doubting you by any means but at times even the silliest thing can cause frustrations.

Is the Corair RAM on the Asus QVL compatibility list? Asus boards need very specific models of RAM to work properly.

Beautiful machine, I drooled all down my shirt while writing this.

Thanks, the motherboard doesn't have a speaker so I haven't been able to diagnose with beeps, which is another problem.

I've posted on several forums, and someone pointed out that my ram is 1600 and my motherboard only supports 1600 (OC) so the settings are wrong. Their theory is that it won't be able to boot until it's adjusted in BIOS, and I'll need to buy different RAM to get it to start.

You are correct about the motherboard not having speakers. However your case should have a small one located usually at or near the bottom front.

As you are trying various forums I would strongly suggest you visit the Asus forums. The one for your specific forum is linked below.

Was the 4 pin power connected firmly?

I assume the power LED lights on the case front? How about the activity light is that flashing at all?

Please report back as to what was wrong once you have it fixed. Enquiring minds need to know.
