Anyway I think Roadbike did more than a adequate job on the Quality Assurance of Cut and Design Aspects (way over my head) but very Concise RB ! On the more Serious Side you can't go wrong as far as Manufacturers are concerned with Honda , Snapper , Toro , Lawn-Boy , Cub-Cadet . All are High Quality Units. Then you have White , Mtd , Poulan , Husqvarna , etc or Sears , K-Mart , Costco , Wal-Mart , Home Depot , Canadian Tire (Box Store Series) . Personally I like the walk behind Models (Small Acreage) Mulching Models (Hate Raking) Options on Self Propelled are Front Wheel Drive Vs Rear Wheel , I can only attest to front Wheel that I have owned (Lawn-boy and Sears) were ok just lift the front when you wished , did not have to hit the Selector Knob to disable the Self Propelled Mode. I realize that there are down sides to Front Wheel Drive also . As far as Riding Units I will leave that to Individuals with far greater experience and working knowledge , but due to their substantial cost , would suggest you do your homework (test rides , demonstrations) hands on to ensure you get what you need and not what the Salesman wanted to Sell You Dude ... Roadbike, of _course_ I'm comparing CR's reliability reports to those of other research journals. Gathering data, reporting on it, and analyzing it is what CR purports to be doing. What else should they be compared to? I am _not_ talking about their individual product tests - I'll get to that in a minute since you brought it up - but rather these data compilations from which CR expects its readers to draw conclusions. There are literally thousands of research journals in all kinds of fields, and their processes are standardized and transparent. And there's a reason: because you can't draw conclusions about sample data or generalize such conclusions beyond the sample if the research isn't rigorous, well controlled, and transparent. The fact that CR is sampling owners of mowers is no excuse for their piss-poor work, anymore than if they were surveying patients in a research study for medication compliance. The research is only useful if it meets research standards. Such things as interrator reliability (where different-branded mowers that are the same under the paint and made in the same factory should have the same result) matter. If the reports aren't reliable or valid, then what is the point of buying the magazine!?! Why would _anyone_ buy CR if they didn't think the info in it was reliable or valid? That would just be plain stupid. But it's not, and all the advertisement of their _journalists_ in white lab coats won't change that. Speaking of their product tests, I recall one test of an Echo blower that was tested in some standardized way (ANSI? OSHA? I forget) and reported with some sort of decible rating for that lab test. CR purported to replicate the test and got a louder result, and called Echo liars in writing. Unfortunately, they didn't know all the original test procedures and therefore couldn't possibly replicate the standardized testing. But that didn't stop them from smearing the Echo product all to hell and back. Even after Echo wrote a letter protesting the incorrect procedures, CR wrote a rebuttal saying "Echo does have a choice: tell the truth about their product!" That not only shows a lack of willingness to listen, but also a fundamental misunderstanding of proper testing procedures.

I am a long time CU subscriber who is currently trying to buy an 18,000 BTU AC. Aside from the fact that CU doesn't rate anything that size, what I find, time and time again, is that user reports don't match the ratings. The same is true on refrigerators. So let me talk about what I we going on - CU has often used oddball criteria to evaluate products. Back in the 70's, water usage was key to a washing machine's review. I am sure this sill goes on. They are, after all, engineers. -no one looks at the long term. If you think this is a problem with appliances, think about what has been going on with pharmaceuticals. - CU doesn't realize that style or design exist, therefore, you cannot sort refrigerators by counter depth or near counter depth - you can select by size though. For stoves, you can't sort by slide in. This is really annoying if you need a specific design. -Perhaps the most famous example of CU calling a product wrong was a top ranked American Standard toilet, which became a class action law suit and which on, I think, Terry Love's plumbing site, there are an unbelievable number of negative reviews and criticisms. None of these guys could figure out why CU doesn't ask plumbers for their experience. I can pros and cons to this, but they have a point. - there is no question that appliances are made more cheaply than in the past, so they don't last anywhere near as long. Parts that were formerly metal are now plastic, often cheap plastic. Add to this the fact that appliances often aren't packed with sufficiently strong materials so they often arrive damaged. Repairs of any type are out sourced, so they are not do e properly and are a major source of hassles. - It is hard to evaluate user reports, because of all the fake reviews, positive and negative on sites. Also, many products have few or new reviews on line. In the end, I found it impossible to figure out which AC to buy because the reviews and the rankings didn't agree. I planned to go to some privately owned stores, but THEY all had reviews that were as bad as the big boxes. So I went into the ONE store that had good reviews and bought what the salesman recommended, a GE, despite all the comments about the quality of GE products. One review said the store pushes cheaply made GEs - but everything is cheaply made. So I decided to trust what the salesman said "In this neighborhood, we wouldn't dare sell anything that isn't good." Now THAT is true - Park Slope, Brooklyn is famously whiney, entitled and quick to complain. It is also quite affluent. Did I make the right choice? No idea. But I need an AC and this is as good a way to decide as any. Good luck!

I love my Calphalon One. I also have a few Calphalon One Non-stick pieces; they are great too. As a gift from my mother in law, I (meaning DH) received an Anolon advanced omlete pan. I wanted to hate it, but it works great. When I spent the $ to purchase my Calphalon, I forgot to take DH into consideration...I bought large cooking pieces. One day, DH decided that he wanted to make oatmeal. Unfortunately, he couldn't, because the smallest pot that we had was a 3 qt saucier. Luckily, Crate and barrel had a sale on Anolon, so I bought him a 1.5 quart sauce pan just for his oatmeal. It was 64.00. I wasn't about to spend 100-120 just for a pot for oatmeal (i.e. calphalon). My husband is very supportive of me spending money on cookware. When we first moved in together, about 7 years ago, right after college, bought a 30+ piece set from JCPennys that royally sucked; that's all that we could afford at the time. Over the years, I have bought a few Tools of the Trade and All Clad pieces from macy's, they work pretty well for stainless steel. When I dumped the JCPennys stuff, I kept the T o T and All Clad. They both works well searing beef at high heats. Just go heating up tortillas on the stainless steel...You'll have a burnt smokey mess to clean up. Back to DH. His attitude is, spend the money now on good stuff that wil last a long time. I am 33 and he is 34. He always says, "we have a lot of years to cook, so don't buy junk".
