Exhaust fan questions

I've got a couple questions about a bathroom exhaust fan that I would appreciate help on.

I have a Panasonic whisper quiet 110CFM fan with light. I have to ventilate upwards to the roof (not out the wall) so I was wondering about water. Will water form in the duct and drip back down into the fan and ceiling? I take hot showers.

Second, I would like to have a self closing damper somewhere along the duct to keep the bugs out of the bathroom, but won't that considerably limit the airflow?

I forgot to mention that the Panasonic fan has a damper built into the outlet. It seems like it is weighted very well so it won't restrict the airflow as much as a more common exhaust damper, but it doesn't seem to seal the duct- there is a lot of space around it for insects to crawl thru. Input?

Do not worry about bugs, the built in damper in the fan, plus the damper on the roof exhaust are fine.

Your fan should be run for some time after your shower to dry the ducts. Water dripping in should not be an issue. Going up into the roof is a common installation. The duct should be insulated to prevent condensation from forming.

You can look into some timers that will allow it to shut off automatically after it runs to dry the ducts out.

In addition to the exhaust fan a motorized intake louver is a good idea. Otherwise you'll need to prop a door open to allow for makeup air. Leaving a door open on cold nights is not a good idea either. If you purchase a 2-stage thermostat you can have the louver open a few degrees before the fan kicks on. Often I notice on cool days that the louver will open and then close without the inside temperature ever reaching the point where the exhaust fan needs to start. If you run a 12-3 (14-3 may work) electric wire thru the louver (or fan) recepticle to the thermostat and continue with 12-2 to the end fan (or louver) then you won't need to run multiple wires. I have a switch below the thermostat to allow the fan to be manually on or off for special reasons which is a good idea.

I wouldn't vent a fan through the soffit. I've seen where people have issues with the exhaust making its way back into the attic causing serious problems with moisture. I'm not sure about using an existing vent. I guess it depends on what is already using that vent and what will happen if two items try to use the same vent at once. Then again, if only one item uses the vent, will the air move backwards through the other duct? Do you have a side wall that you can use that's not close to the soffit?

Bathroom fans move much less air than a whole house fan. I don't think you will have a problem. If the bathroom fan is going to be used to remove moisture after a shower then I suggest wiring it to a timer. Running the fan for 20-30 minutes during and after the shower should be sufficient.

Highly unlikely with the wiring that's there. Someone would have had to intentionally run extra wiring (ie: 3-wire) to the fan. You will most likely be stuck with the fan and light coming on at the same time unless you can run another wire from the switch.

Due to condo restrictions I am not able to cut a hole in my roof to vent the exhaust out. I made a thread a while back here about it, the conclusion was that the best thing to do would be to vent the bathroom to the area by the passive attic vent (basically just a grill on the roof to let the hot air out). Knowing that, I would like to have some type of damper or screen at the output of the exhaust fan duct. A screen would keep the insects out the best, but I assume it would greatly restrict the air, correct? What about a damper, how much would that cut down on airflow?
