What would you do here?

I'm trying to figure out what layout to do for the vanity in our master bathroom. To keep from moving plumbing and because I want more storage off the counter I'd like to do either a shallow linen hutch on the counter or a full-depth tall linen cabinet between the two vanities. (can't do recessed medicine cabinets, and don't want surface-mount) So it will either be:

30" vanity (with drawers), 12" drawer stack with shallow linen hutch on top, 30" vanity (with drawers)

Or

30" vanity (with drawers), 12" linen cabinet, 30" vanity (with drawers)

I guess the main advantage to doing a full-depth linen cabinet is that I could use stock granite counters on the vanities and save a bundle. But would the cabinet be too overpowering??

How wide is your room, mandolynn? Mine is fairly narrow so I chose to use a drawer stack with a 12" depth kitchen wall cabinet set on-counter for storage. However, I don't envision this being deep enough for linens and we will use it more for toiletries.

If you need the linen storage, then you may want to go with the linen tower instead.

My configuration will be 42" vanity-18" 3 drawer stack with 12" depth counter cabinet-42" vanity. My total run is 102".

A 12" wide cabinet is really narrow. I'd recommend that you take a look at one in person to see how useful it would be for linens.

Personally, I'd consider the full-depth linen tower to be too 'in my face' while standing at the sink -- especially if I was wanting to visit with Hubby while getting dressed. I much prefer the shallower upper.

Since you are just renting I would do raised beds that you can disassemble and either discard, give away, or take with you when you move. If you wanted to take any plants with you, it would be a lot easier to dig them up and take them if they were in raised beds. If I was the homeowner I would be concerned about water damage to the structure, but perhaps your landlord doesn't care. I would probably install a couple of drains that empty out to the street if I owned that. Ryegrass: you could dig it up or dig it under before it goes to seed and then mulch thickly to keep it from sprouting next rainy season, or put down layers of cardboard and mulch over that to smother it, or Round-Up it if chemicals don't bother you (but again, before it goes to seed). If that was my house I would correct the drainage problem because it could potentially affect the house. Perhaps you could negotiate with your landlord to pay part of the rent with "sweat equity" instead of money to install drainage and fix the problem. For any drainage problem first you have to figure out where the water is coming from--if it is from another property there may be city or county codes that makes that other property owner responsible. I see no rain gutters on that structure--is that the main source of the water?

Without seeing the counters, it's hard to pick the right color, but if you wanted a barely there neutral, I could see something like SW Sea Salt -- a very pale green/blue. I used it in a room with a lot of white cabinetry and when we sold, we had a lot of people ask our agent about the color. Hi Linnea, I think your green and white one is Francee. I have trouble integrating the green and white ones into a predominantly blue and yellow bed too. Do you have any other hostas that are green and white to balance the green/white to gold/ blue ratio? I've had an eye operation, so I'm not sure I'm seeing the colours of your hostas properly, so I hesitate making suggestions on how to move yours around. Generally speaking I've found that solid blue hostas and solid green hostas act like neutrals. I use yellow hostas as contrast to blue or green hostas or to pick up the yellow in a variegated hosta. After many years of trial and error in combining hostas I do the following: 1. A gold centered blue hosta goes well with a gold margined blue hosta. The same holds true with white and blue variegated hostas. 2. Two adjacent hostas should have a common colour, except that green ties anything together for me. 3. Identically variegated hostas look good together if the leaves are different in some way...either smaller or ruffled or shiny etc. If I can't correct what I consider an error I introduce green, either a green hosta or another perennial. I like using green ferns (Athyrium 'Lady in Red', 'Dre's Dagger','Victoriae'), aruncus aethusifolius or epimediums. Queen Josephine is a gold margined green hosta and Frances Williams is a gold margined blue hosta. So, a gold hosta would complement both. Francee is a white margined green hosta and Queen Josephine is gold margined green hosta. A solid green hosta would be a good transition from one to the other. In the end, whatever pleases you is what works. If you haven't used Hakonechloa macra before, it does get quite big. I put mine in front of the smaller aruncus and should have done the reverse.

We haven't yet moved in, master bedroom and bathroom are not yet done. But we stay here quite a bit during the day and brought in some random furniture from the main house. Thank you for the suggestions, I see that grey's don't work in this place and I am not at all offended by suggestions. I went with some of them to paint this place after all.

The area where the sink is going is 85" wide by maybe 5 feet deep, plus the shower and tub that face it.

I wasn't thinking for linen storage, we have a small linen closet in there, it's mainly for toothpaste, mouthwash, hair stuff. You know, the 40 little things you have to clear off the counter every time you need to clean. Drives me crazy.

Picturing it, I do think that a full-depth cabinet would probably be too big, and chop it up into almost 2 small cubbies.

So, probably will go with the 12" depth separate cabinet on the counter. Thanks for the opinions. I can sometimes get tunnel vision on some of these decisions.

I am planning on perhaps a 12" deep tower(ideally recessed a few inches into wall) on top of the counter for toiletries- and am thinking the bottom 18" or so will be without doors, ie open shelves to put my most used items (make-up, etc.). I thought that the doors would get in the way and prevent me from keeping anything directly on the counter in front of it. Still in blueprint stage- but thought I would throw that out there for you to mull over! :>)

Also, think about doing a 24" deep base instead of a 21" one.
