Computer Problem

I can get on the internet, email, facebook, and my bank etc. but when I try to go into any program, I get the box requesting "Choose the program you want to use to open this file". There is Adobe and Internet Explorer and Microsoft word viewer to choose from. I tried them all and all I get is some unreadable printing. I am using Windows Vista and AVG antivirus. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? TIA!

When you get it cleaned, my suggestion would be to "Uninstall AVG" then download, install, update Avast Free...you have to register it and its good for 14 months...they will send you an email when its time to re-register which I recall is just a matter of clicking on a link they send in the email..plus its a much better AV

Hi pkspigs, All I can find on the issue is "If your iPad is disabled, someone typed in the wrong passcode enough to disable it. joann- You can also relax about it being a virus. It's just one of hundreds of things that can be adjusted on a computer and every one of us sometimes hits the wrong key. If you have more complex questions in the future, the Computer Help Forum here on GardenWeb is a good place to go.

Whew. Glad it's fixed! My mom and I went through something simliar years ago. Except, dummy me, I couldn't figure out what she meant. Until I finally drove over and saw it in person. Ah ha. Click, click, fixed. Now if I could've just gotten in via remote desktop it'd saved me a drive. She had the taskbar on the side and I just couldn't figure out what she meant. A "sidebar". Huh? She'd unlocked the taskbar, and slid it so that it was vertical instead of at the bottom and horizontal. Got it. I thought she meant she had an auxillary "thing" going on. HA!

Good morning, right now the computer is doing well, but I had kept the modem unplugged over night, so I don't know how long this session will last. It definitely is the modem, I'll call the ISp this morning and see what they have to say. If it just lasts long enough for me to pay my bills and so some other business stuff, I'll be satisfied (Not happy) Keep you posted. I do enjoy having a kindle and several book on file, reading is a good sport.

thanks but if I can't open notepad, how can I use this?

Look on that page and click on the links that say... Windows Vista exe fix.reg etc.

Those are Download links, you dont need to use notepage unless you want to open the downloads to read what's inside of them.

the ones below the link mikie mentions are just if you want to do it manually that way you would need the notepad but you don't want to do it that way you want to just click on the actual link and follow those instructions right above the link on how to merge it after you download it.
