I am looking at the 2 laptops in the Costco ad, both HPs.

One has a AMD Turion II Dual Core Processor (w/ 17.3 screen for $679.99) and the other has an Intel Core i3 Processor (with 15.6 screen)for $639.99. Everything else is listed identically.

Would someone please explain the difference in processors, please, for a computer novice, and any other thoughts on these 2 computers.

Thank you for any advice or if I should look further.

Either processor would be ok, I don't think you will find a difference in them to say definitely choose one or the other.

It would take me an hour to go through each processor and try and out line a major difference and then try an translate it into something you / we could understand fully.

Giving us the 2 Model #s might be eaiser, you could even try that, just Google the model # and the word review for each and see what other users say...

Processor is a coin flip. With everything else being "identical" and the cost difference minimal I would focus on the larger viewing area.

Any computer can be considered unworthy by someone, because a lot of it is nebulous and personal taste. For example, for my previous computer purchase, I bought a cheapie laptop because I had all the bells and whistles I needed at work so the last thing I wanted to do at home was use a computer. So I just bought something for e-mail and online shopping at home. THEN, I lost my job. Now I work from home a ton, and my DVD player that was attached to my TV went out and I can't afford a new one so I am using my laptop for watching movies, which I also do a ton more since I replaced expensive cable that I didn't care much for with Netflix. I use this as an example because even though you maybe bought a little more than you think you need, you never know where your life will take your or where technology will take us in the future. I know I paid 100 dollars more for getting a new Sony laptop, with the sole reason being I didn't have to struggle with the keyboard the way I did with all the other ones I tried, and I know I will be typing a ton in graduate school. So I have some remores at paying 100 more for a computer that is not that much better than the cheaper ones, but I KNOW I will be thanking myself later when I am knee deep in my doctoral disseration and am spending hours on it. It's very hard to know how to parcel out financial priorities in these difficult times, and THAT I DO think is worth discussing on a forum. I say, if you CAN, pay a little more to get a little more which will stand you in good stead for the future. But other people will say, get the minimum and live with it. Neither school is right or wrong. But once you have decided, own your decision and don't look back, IMHO. Because you are just going to get conflicting advice from the two camps til the cows come home. If you made what YOU thought was a good decision, stand by it. . . . Of course that is just my opinion, lol!

That is the one thing I have noticed since scouring the net and asking everyone and anyone in the know their opinions on who makes the most well put together laptop. It seems that many folks are extreemely loyal to one particular product or brandname, but one brandname doesn't seem to be conclusive over the other. The Imac sure has its very loyal following, as well as Dell and Toshiba and, another brand rapidly picking up steem is HP, especially their DV6000 and DV9000 lines. I am beginning to conclude that at this point, figure out exactly how much of a laptop you need and can afford, paying particular attention to Size of Hard Drive, How much Memory (RAM), and third, how much graphics card, and lastly and most important, the CPU. I have concluded that the duel core processor is important, as it is essentially two processors stapped together, and the OS uses one for certain functions and the other for certain functions, and most importantly, only one is being used and powered when both are not needed, saving battery power and overall electric consumption. Another rule of thumb, to save money, get the base core duo (1.60GHz, I believe), and skip the upgrade on the CPU and get 2G's of RAM, as your CPU runs out of cache space for storage, it will draw from Ram, and adding RAM is much cheaper than adding a high end CPU. Bottom line, I'm waiting for some hot sales. Another thing to think about is size, and yeah, folks, size does matter... Most of the 17" models that I've tried out in the stores just seem too damn big and heavy, especially if your going to use the thing as a LAP top... it's just too damn big for my lap, and I have a big lap at that... the 12" is just too small, especialy for viewing movies, etc. That's the one thing that turned me off from the DELL XPS 1200... hot looking little machine... just too small. 14-15" seems just right for my taste. It seems to me that all these machines (Toshiba, Dell, HP and many others) are all beginning to become clones of one another. Seems they are are made in China nowadays, and no one has yet to convince me overwhelmingly that one is better than the other...

Minw Came with 4 gigs of ram, that is the exact model and specs I have, that is the exact computer I bought. I did install with administrative privileges. They really screwed up on using someone else to make this I think. No one ever had this trouble when masque did the games for them. A lot of people wrote for a refund and got it but since it's working on my desktop I won't go that route. I read nothing but complaints and even people that meet more than the specs can't get it to work, too fussy they claim. Someone with an alienware computer couldn't even get it to work which I know doesn't mean much but they have more than you need to run this. One other person has 4 computers in the house and 2 meet the requirements and 2 are beyond and it will only work on one they claim. I guess from now on when they put out any new ones gonna have to read the specs careflly as the next one might not even run on this desktop unless IGT hears all the complaints and does not have encore put it out. Thanks all, I have ordered from both TigerDirect (mostly in my days of build your own from motherboard up) and Newegg. They have always delivered on component parts, may have even purchased some systems). I don't travel much anymore, still I like the idea of downsizing to no more than a 14" screen... the 13.3 looks attractive too. Then when at home, I use a Samsung SyncMaster LCD and full keyboard. My driving reason for looking continues. I am still using the troubled Gateway - subject of another post that I haven't visited lately - and last night when I shut down I first noticed I couldn't access my "Maxtor USB HDD" to do a data backup, I gave the shut down command anyway. The computer again hung up, but rather than force a manual power down I went to bed. This morning when I got to the Computer it had shut down. I hit the power button and it started what looked like a normal boot then hung with the (light) "blue screen of death". I decided to just ignore and go about some other work, but did put the Gateway recovery CD in the bay. I noticed the CD indicator come of briefly, but nothing more happened. Then, perhaps 3 to 5 minutes later, the computer booted.. and I am now using. Does this behavior suggest other than hardware problems? I had concluded the computer has an intermittent problem with the the internal HDD. Sorry for changing the direction of this thread, but it all hangs together in my mind.

I am an amd fan and prefer them but is a coin flip as DA said, I too would go for the screen size. However that will make it much heavier. If I were the one buying I would go for the amd 17 inch especially if you are using it as your main laptop.

zep, I can't find where it tells me a model #.
Sounds like you all think either would be fine and I am also thinking just to go with the larger screen as I will be using mostly at home, very seldom taking it with me.
One more question, though:
On the larger screen one, which is the AMD, the other specs listed are:
4GB Memory, 320GB Hard Drive, DVD-RW, Wireless N and Windows 7 Home Premium. Are each of these sufficient?

yes those specs are fine you would have a nice system there.That version of windows 7 is very good choice also. The wireless N is the latest protocol so should work with any router and be nice and fast.

Now last question, I think.
The price on this at Costco is $679.99. Does this seem to be a good price for what I've talked about above? Also, is Costco a good place to get it (I would be ordering online) or should I be buying somewhere else?

I just bought an HP notebook at Costco with the i3 chip. I was surprised it is rated at 2.13 ghz. But it had a 3 mb cache (L2), DDR3 memory & 64 bit. Plus Costco added another year guaranty on top of HP's one year. I'm pleased so far. Plenty of speed. Good feel to keyboard. Touch pad has excellent range - can move an item clear across the screen with one motion. No sub woofer so sound is tinny. Screen resolution 1200 x 800 - so so.

I think Costco is fine and you do want to check on that extra year deal. Price seems decent too. I would go for it if you think it is what you need. the one thing I always tell people to check on is if you can return for full refund rather than exchange only, some online sites only do exchange like newegg for example, that is about it.
