We decided to have a GE service person look at it in addition to the local shop. He informed us that you can not add freon unless you purge the entire system. Also the model we have was problematic for owners of GE with just this problem. Something about the poor quality of the welds and aluminum. So a basically good freezer is headed for the junk. That is very irritating to say the least Replacement of the tubing and shelves would cost way more than a new freezer whicih won't be a GE or Whirlpool.

I think the radon thing is a huge gimmick. The radon mitigation system is about the dumbest thing I have ever seen. This is about as dumb as those little "horns" that you put on your car to scare deer away. You drill a hole in the basement slab and run an exhaust pipe through the roof to allow all the trapped radon to escape? Who is to say wherever they decided to drill the hole, the radon is just sitting there waiting to escape? Why wouldn't the radon be trapped under a different area and still seeping into the house? What about all the radon that is outside? Or in the supermarket? Or church? Radon is supposedly everywhere - so how do you escape it? By wearing a gas mask? The research I did on radon told me that only a small number of people could get lung cancer IF subjected to this over a LIFETIME. How long is a lifetime? 80 years? Well thats about the time you die anyway - so how can you prove it was radon that did you in? I truly think the radon scare is just a gimmick, designed to sucker those who live in fear out of their money. One minute eggs are bad for you - too much cholesterol. Next minute they're healthy. Really doesn't matter - we are all going to die sometime, and if your number is up, God is going to take you out no matter how well you safeguarded yourself. Yes, you want to protect yourself within reason, but there is also such a thing as worrying about nothing. Our inspection turned up radon in the basement, and our buyer asked me to pay for a mitigation system. This was coming from a guy in his 50's who smoked. Amazing - he's not concerned about his chances of cancer from being a smoker - but he wanted me to safeguard him from radon. He had also lived somewhere else for the previous 50 years - so who is to say that my house would have killed him? I told him "no - your health concerns are your problem, you pay for it". My realtor thought I was committing house seller suicide by denying him that, but I stuck to my guns because I knew I was right. And he still bought the house.

I'm not a granite guy or a carpenter, but i am a machinist and fabricator of steel and aluminum parts and equipment. I haven't seen the chip in the granite personally, so I'm not sure how it really looks, but I will say, that some people are very easy to work for, some a little less so, and some are impossible to make happy. No matter what, no matter how much you've paid, no matter how experienced your guy is and how many 5 star reviews he has, nothing is ever perfect. Myself, I tend to roll with things, I won't gripe about it unless it's really heinous, and a lot of how I react depends on the difficulty of the job and the effort the crew put in. If they're hung over every day, or smell like they had a hydraulic lunch, that just isn't going to work. If they bust a$$ every day, do good work (is the rest of the job good quality? Are they on time, prompt, or do you have to constantly call them and ask when they're coming?), act like professionals, I realize things happen to the best of them. And I act accordingly.

Mihojas, I totally feel your pain. In fact this post has brought back some of the hurt feelings and frustration I had during our kitchen reno which is now 7 years old. CANNOT believe it, but I have the receipts and FB photos to prove it! I won't bore you with all the details, suffice to say that I could probably write a book about the troubles we had. Our Granite woes began with the night (few days before Christmas so freezing cold that it took what seemed like hours for granite to thaw) of install. By the time all these men left my kitchen, I realized that they had granite running in all different ways and seams were atrocious! We ended up having two pieces replaced, fine. There was a broken piece in back corner of another piece that I knew would get covered up by backsplash, and even though they offered to replace that piece too, I said it was fine, and it was, no need to replace it. Anyhow, fast forward a few months to when new granite comes in, grain is going the correct way, but this granite doesn't match the pattern of the old pieces that were staying. A couple of weeks in, the peninsula starts cracking...long long story short, they decide to just replace all the granite and make sure it is cut with the grain and pattern all going the way we want/specify... Meanwhile, six/seven months after initial order the granite for my pony wall finally arrives...fabricator spends most of the day installing the two pieces (16 feet long). As I inspect it before he leaves, I notice one piece is cracked completely in half, can't remember now if there was even any attempt to repair it. He admits he broke it at the shop before he loaded it onto his truck. I was sick...went into DH's den and said I cannot deal with this, granite is cracked in half and Allen was just going to pretend nothing was wrong... Anyhow, that granite ended up being completely replaced. It all broke when they took it off, so there wasn't the possibility of just fixing the broken half. I won't continue with further granite stories...but do have to say I was appalled at how relatively nice people who I thought I had a decent relationship with tried to 'pull the wool over my eyes'. I think I am very reasonable, perhaps even close to being a push-over, but dealing with this company actually taught me the valuable lesson of learning how to speak up for myself, and learn how to demand being treated with respect and with honesty. I think that is all you are demanding. Just so you know, I have now learned to live with that crack in the peninsula for 7 years...company went bankrupt the DAY my granite was scheduled to be replaced. I paid for a fairly decent repair with the money I never had to pay for my granite.
