what grout would you use with this mix of tiles?

Hi,

I'm about to order tiles and would like to ask for opinions on grout.

The bathroom will have a mix of ovals - carrerra, lagos, thassos, on one wall: {{gwi:1481631}}

and pure white thassos ovals on the other tub walls and behind the vanity. {{gwi:1481632}}

On the floor will be rectangular marble tiles - calacutta with some gray and hits of light brown veining.

What grout color would you choose? I am thinking of a soft pale gray as it will be easier to keep clean than white would, AND, it will show the nice oval shapes off better.

???

I would try to match the grey in the top picture, or a shade lighter.

It would subtly enhance the white ovals, and tone down the mix a bit.

Gorgeous tile! I would use a medium gray. You could use a lighter gray with the all white tiles.

Obviously you can do what ever is aesthetically pleasing to you, but YES you can use 2 different finishes on floor and walls, also 2 different grouts- I think that is actually desirable.

I just came across this thread, and don't know if anyone is still reading, but wanted to write, because I just put up my backsplash (in a new white shaker style kitchen). Everyone who sold the white subways said to use white for the grout. But most people in Gardenweb were saying to use gray? I didn't end up buying at home depot, but a guy there said it best. He said that the "authentic" color of grout used with subway tiles at the beginning of the century was always white. I told him mine looked creamy to me, and he said "If the tile reads white, at all, when you look at them, use "bright white". When you see subway tiles in a movie and the grout looks gray, that is done to make them look very old and that the grout has gotten dirty/discolored after many years. He said it is was in the 1980's that gray or black grout started to be used with a white tile. The brick pattern doesn't dissapear with white grout. You can still see the brick pattern under lighting because the tiles aren't totally flat. It's a cleaner look with white and authentic to the early century rather than the 80's. The original subway tile did not have beveled edges. This allowed a smooth surface as opposed to the modern tile which really defines separation in the installation.

I just last Friday had both my walls and floors (I have the same large format tile on the walls as well as the floor) grouted with Mapei Warm Gray. It's gorgeous, I love it on the walls, but somehow I'm finding it a little to light for the floors, even though I like and wanted a uniform look. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with how the bathroom is turning out, but I think I'd have gone a little darker on the floors if I had it to do over.

so the large beige-ish tile is going on the floor and that patterned tile is on the shower wall? can you post a pic of the room? does that large tile come in a 2x2 or 3x3 size? it should. use that. u said it looks busy, but I don't see how. it's a solid look tile. same premise they've done here. used a smaller tile in the same make as the floor introducing any other type of mosaic will look busier. if your large floor tile is a matte finish, it could be cut and used on the shower floor. maybe have it cut in thinner, rectangular strips. they've done it here in the shower

I agree-- a dove grey-- something along the lines of Laticrete's #88 Silver Shadow, or #89 Smoke Grey.

I gotta say-- I love the tile!! That's something I've never seen before-- kinda like ssssstrrrreeeetched out penny tiles!! LOL

Thanks! I am glad that other people agree about the gray.

Bill, thank you especially for the specific suggestion - it gives me a starting point to ask about when I go back to the showroom.

I can't believe but forgot to mention that we are also using rectangular strips - I think 4" x 12" of the darker color stone in the mix (the lagos) as a border around the perimeter of the floor. The reason for this is to tie the bathroom in from the adjoining hallway, which will have lagos on the floor. That is the reason why I wanted to have one wall with the mix, to carry the color up, instead of going all white.

We already picked the grout for the lagos for the hallway, so I think that same color grout should be used on the perimeter lagos in the bathroom too.

Is it weird to change grout colors like that on a floor? The brown grout we picked for the perimeter fades away in between the brown tiles, so I hope it will seem natural, especially as a carry-over from the next room.

It's not common, but it's not out of the ordinary, either, to grout two different tiles two different colors on the same surface.
