She is right, only one anti-virus, but Superantispyware, ccleaner and Spybot are not anti virus programs. They are anti spyware. They run on demand and are not running in the background conflicting with each other.
Back up your data at least twice on disks or a portable hard drive and maybe a third time on an online storage site like dropbox and you should be safe to go ahead with the restore.

you do only have one antivirus that is your Norton, the others are not Antivirus programs, Superantispyware is a malware or spyware removal program and it is a manual run program it is not running full time and ccleaner is just that a clean up program has nothing at all to do with virus removal. Spybot also is not a removal program wiht it you just open it once a week hit the update button then the enable all protection so the shield is green and that is it.

You do not have a problem there with any running programs conflicting.

However I would add malwarebytes free and run a scan right away to make sure these problems are not from an infection, the symptoms are often ones we see with infection.
Download it install and update it then run the full scan and let us know the results.

it would also be a good idea since you have superantispyware to go ahead and get it's updates and run a full scan with it also.

Have you been doing all of your windows updates?

I suggest you run the secunia tool to see if you may need something else updated that could cause issues.

If you take a look at your event viewer it should give you some details on exactly what is causing the crashes that would be helpful for us to know.

there will be several categories there like system, application, security etc, click on each of the categories to view that info look for any red flags or yellow flags if you see one click on that line item to highlight it and right click it to get more info, that will give you some codes and info on what exactly is happening you can let us know that.

At any rate you do need to be backing up all your important files and info in case this is something that is going to fail, you do not want to lose your data.

It is possible that your Norton could be causing some of these problems, it is known to cause some problems on some computers and it does use a lot of resources.

also want to mention have you ever used the registry cleaner part of ccleaner or any other registry cleaner tool? That is NOT a good idea, they cause a lot of problems and are not recommended.

Thanks. I have plenty of errors and warnings in the event viewer. Not even sure what all that means, but most of the warnings are related to "disk" as the source.

well you may not need to if you let us know exactly what the errors are in the event viewer, that is what I am hoping for with this info. Each event will have a number code for it that is important we can look those up.

Here's the last 3 errors and 1 warning (I have tons of warnings). There is just too many errors & warnings to paste here. Not sure what you can make out of this info or even if it's the info you request, but, hopefully, it tells you something. Note: The first entry (error) is exactly when I turned on my laptop this morning, and the 2nd one is when I *think* my computer did a crash yesterday, but can't be sure.

OK so others have addressed the safety programs issue. Now to the recovery process. As you already seem nervous let me suggest strongly that if and when you get too flustered you walk away for a while - minutes or hours - and return with a cool head. This is a fairly straight forward process really.

As you are a business and the computer is a business write off one presumes you have invested in an external hard drive to protect your data. You do have one of course?

Good, so I would suggest that if you do not have a disk imaging program like Acronis True Image or similar then you use the feature provided by Vista and create a full image of your hard drive. Personally I also copy the 'My documents' folder to the external drive just because I can and it creates confidence. I am assuming all your company data is stored in 'My Documents' or more likely a sub folder inside it.

Now you can use the recovery CDs to recreate the computer to where it was the day you took it out of the box.

Once restored the computer to factory defaults make sure Norton goes to the website and updates, no doubt you will need to enter your data to be recognised as a paying customer. Then go to the Microsoft update site and grab all the updates that have been issued since your computer was built.

Now you can move ahead with any other programs you need installed. You can also copy back the relevant company files to the 'My Documents' folder.

what was the result of your malwarebytes full scan?

You said computer was crashing for " a while"..How long is a while?.If only for a couple of weeks or so, then try a system restore back to that date....check and see how far back your dates go. Of course any info/data that has been added since then will have to be re-entered..so back up any business data etc that has gone in for that period and make sure your AV goes on line immediately for all its newest updates..Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Malware showed nothing and frankly, never does when I run it.

Yes, I have a back up drive, but am getting a clickfree to use for this so the files are easier to move back, plus I want another mobile back up unit.

Computer has been crashing for many, many months - like 7, and I just keep letting it reboot since it can. So far, no issues, but one of these times, it may not.....so, I need to run the recovery.

Haven't done it yet...still hesitant....but I know I have to get up the balls to do it. I wouldn't be so hesitant if this computer didn't have all my work stuff, emails, favorites, etc on here, but was only used for personal.
