Getting Down to the end - do handles matter?

Hi All,

I think I have most of the applicances picked as of today.

Range top: Bluestar 36" with grill in SS

Hood: VAH 42" SS pro style

DW: Bosch Integra line(looks all stainless with handle on top)

Layout in the kitchen is such that the range is on the north wall, the microwave, ovens and fridge are basically in a row on the east wall, and the dishwasher is on the west wall across the island from the ovens roughly.

My question is how will it all look if they have different handles? I never really thought it mattered, but I can choose a different handle on the Bosch (one looks more like the GE Monogram thin handle and one is curved like the fridge, Dacor and the Miele handles.

I would love peoples' thoughts on this. My husband nixed the GE Monogram oven pro handle style -- too chunky and morgue like in his mind.

I am not deciding the ovens based on looks, but performance. I am still debating this choice, but I am trying to figure out if this is going to look okay -- I've never thought about it until now! It makes a difference about the dishwasher handle since I have a choice.

I'm like you; performance first, looks second. In my opinion, the only time you really need to worry about the handles is when the two appliances are right next to eachother. Even then, I think you have a bit more leaway when the two handles in question run perpendicular to eachother (ie vertical fridge handle and horizontal oven handles).

BTW, I hate to complicate things when you're close to having everything picked out, but since you haven't decided on ovens yet, have you considered the Fisher & Paykel ovens? When we were oven shopping, we also considered the same list of ovens as you are, but also the FP ones too, which we ended up choosing. To us they were a nice balance between bells and whistles and the price tag. Also, I believe they just changed the door style slightly, so you may be able to find a great price on a model with the old door.

It's no surprise (to the 2 of us, at least) that I totally agree with Alku05. Performance first and handles not that big of a deal. I think you'd have to really look to notice in most cases, since most seem to blend with the appliance. I have styles I prefer (probably the morgue-like ones), but in all the decision making there is to do about appliances, I draw the line at (before) worrying about handle style.

My top 3 ovens choices were the Miele MasterChef, the Fisher & Paykel, and the Monogram ZET2. I also went with the F&P...More cooking modes than the Monogram, but a lot nicer price tag than the Miele. I would rather have straight, pro-style handles, but when I'm baking bread, all I'll care about is that they open the door. (But if you can get a good deal on the floor model Miele, go for it!)

I've found great deals online at Elite Appliance: www.eliteappliance.com They also just happen to have a showroom in Dallas that I was able to visit. So far so good on customer service, even though we haven't bought anything yet, I'm receiving multiple quotes on the kinds of items we are in the market for. The particular rep who was helping us asked us all the right questions, heard my questions and concerns, explained brands I wasn't familiar with, and tried to steer me in a general right direction for our wants and needs. Plus they offer all brands from high-end to not so and all the prices seem to be as reasonable as I can find. The showroom also had floor models and open box deals that were discounted even more. Thanks. But I think you are being too kind. The remaining "Rio" is so healthy and I really like the white flowers on the darker red stems but these days there are so many of these "Coral Bells" that look very similar...similar to "Rio". So to be honest it is the broken symmetry that too much bugs me. And this is also true for the missing BB. It is crazy that I keep going back again and again to these buddleia. They are so "foo foo" as Ken might say, in our zone. But having one survive gives me (false?) hope.

The nursery told me herbs were easy and they preferred dryer soil so I water once a week but even so, ==>>> a newly transplanted plant .. of any kind.. needs enough water .. to settle in.. and get its roots pumping again ... before they will have any kind of drought tolerance ... and.. these are NOT plants the favor lack of water ... and your coir system does favor excessive drying ... if you were growing them indoors.. in a sunny window.. i might also tell you to make sure you dont overwater ... but out in the wind .. in that configuration ... i say .. water more .. i only had one plant over the years in coir ... and it seems to me.. i watered it once or twice a day ... until the water ran out the bottom ... and it still usually ended up drying to the detriment of the plant ... in other words ... what sonni said ... ken ps: what im thinking ... with no pot walls .. the wind is running thru the media ... and drying it from the sides and bottom ... thereby increasing drying ... as compared to a plastic pot with sides and a bottom ...

Yes, one must go through psychoanalysis in order to become an analyst (they are nearly all Freudian). It can take years and years. That kind of minute self-absorption could make anyone a bit looney. Most have a PhD, not an MD. But I did know an analyst in St Louis (who was part of the famed St Louis Psychoanalytic Institute), who was a delightful, very thoughtful man. He became interested in psychiatry and religion and wrote a couple of very interesting books on the subject. A classmate of mine from 4th grade through HS is also a member of the St Louis Psychoanalytic Institute). I was so hoping she would be at our 50th HS reunion but she was a no-show, so I have no idea what she is like today. She was brilliant all the way through school. Her family was Egyptian and her father was also a psychoanalyst who had trained under Anna Freud. They left Egypt for political reasons, and she was 9 years old when she joined us in 4th grade. She had attended a British school in Egypt and had the most exquisite english accent. She was tons of fun while we were schoolmates.

The F&P are a little short in depth for me. I took some of my bigger cake pans in and a large dutch oven and they were very tight. I did look though!

The thread linked below has usable interior oven measurements. The Miele isn't listed though...

Does anybody else have opinions for teachersuzanne on handles matching? I feel bad that I diverted her thread (sorry!) and am hoping to get it back on track so she can get some more input.

I had everything matching perfectly. Then I switched out my oven and now have a non-matching handle. If I showed you the two photos side by side it's hardly noticeable.

The fridge has one style handle and the oven another. They are not adjacent. Honestly, it looks normal. You don't see them together.

About to install a micro drawer under the Miele oven. Those handles/styling are completely different. That will be seen. At this point, after second oven and second micro I will be happy to have good appliances that work and don't break. I'm an interior designer but at this point, I'm thinking handles be damned.

Gosh I didn't even think of handles matching. I just ordered the best appliances I could find and went from there. I am buying additional (switch out) handles for the subzero, but other than that, they're all different, and I think it will be just fine :)

In all the years I've visited other peoples homes, I've never noticed the handles on their appliances. In fact, even after reading all the threads about handles, I still forget to check out the handles when I'm in another home. I'd better start to get with it. Enjoy whatever you choose.
P.S. I love my G.E. Monogram ovens.
